Infamous ship-jumping twin Joanne Ingham found dead in motel (Stuff.co.nz)

The Ingham twins hit the headlines in 1997 after stowing away on a ship, then swimming 19km through shark-infested waters after jumping overboard.

Mid-last year, after concerns were raised about the former emergency housing complex, the property emptied of nearly all its former tenants, according to neighbours. "We have not made a lot of progress with the other problem, which is alcohol." On Tuesday, MSD said the motel was no longer being used for that purpose. The twins were no strangers to courtrooms after their return. Police were called to the Harbour City Motor Inn on Webb St in Te Aro about 2.40am on Tuesday after the 43-year-oldโ€™s body was found. During a court appearance in Wellington in April last year, Olney said Ingham had gone eight years without offending.

Joanne and Sarah Ingham first came to international attention in 1997. By just after 1pm, the scene at the motel was almost abandoned. "I'm still the father and I'm still alive," he said at the time.
