Apple announces new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, the M2 chip and ... (CNBC)

Apple unveiled iOS 16, the new M2 chip, a new MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro and more.

Apple invited some media and developers to its headquarters in Cupertino, California, to watch the keynote. The Apple Store website is down, which suggests that Apple might also announce new products during the WWDC 2022 event. But the event is also a homecoming for many Apple employees who have been working remotely for the past two years because of the pandemic. Apple is working with companies like Ford, Nissan and more to support the next generation of CarPlay and said the next vehicles that support it will start to be announced late next year. They're the folks who build apps for the Mac, iPhone, iPad, Watch and TV. This is usually when Apple unveils new tools for them, and big new updates for the iPhone, iPad and other platforms. People are starting to make their way to their seats ahead of the keynote. He spoke briefly and turned it over to software chief Craig Federighi, who led the crowd in a cheer of "go developers!" It's a brand new look that allows users to customize the lock screen with widgets -- which have already been available on the home screen -- by pressing and holding. As part of the update, Apple is rolling out a new Siri user interface and new banner notifications. Apple has been rumored to get into the buy now, pay later space for about a year now. Users will also be able to track and manage their medications, vitamins and supplements with the Health app. Apple's WWDC is the company's biggest Apple software announcement of the year.

Best outfits from Apple WWDC 2022 (Mashable)

From hoodies to heels, here are some of the best outfits we saw on Apple employees at WWDC 2022.

Federighi gets docked half a point for his sneakers which, while sharp, are more of a cream than the blinding white this outfit calls for, but he earns it back for his basketball prop work. I really wish he would have gone with a lighter, grey-toned shirt as a base, but I love the matching glasses and bomber. I honestly doubt Cook dressed himself today (the man makes $92 million a year, he should be delegating his shopping) so I'd really like to extend my congratulations to his stylist. We catch a glimpse of Ardill mid jump squat when SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi bursts in on one of his sessions. We are ranking this for the color story alone. 5 biggest surprises from Apple's WWDC 2022 event (The Indian Express)

From the debut of the next-generation CarPlay to the ability to use your iPhone as a Mac webcam, these are the most unexpected announcements at Apple's WWDC ...

You will, of course, need to update your iPhone to iOS 16 and Mac to the latest macOS Ventura to turn an iPhone into a webcam. A chunkier, squared-off look, a fanless body, a new 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display and the second-generation M2 chip makes the new MacBook Air the coolest notebook in town. While we were expecting the iPadOS to get a big update, we weren’t aware that Apple was quietly developing a whiteboard app. The level of customisation features and the way you control your radio, adjust your AC and view car data like fuel level or speed shows how serious Apple is thinking about getting the software right on cars. But there were still a few surprises in store – ranging from the debut of the next-generation CarPlay to the ability to use your iPhone as a webcam on a Mac. Here’s everything we weren’t expecting at WWDC 2022. The best part is you don’t have to connect the iPhone to the Mac; the computer will instantly recognise the unit.

M2-powered MacBook Pro 13-inch announced at WWDC 2022 (Laptop Mag)

Today at WWDC Apple announced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with the new M2 processor and up to 24GB of RAM.

The $1,299 starting price will get you the M2-powered MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Let's be honest, nobody is going to do that, so I went to Apple's MBP M2 page (opens in new tab) and pimped my dream 13-inch MBP M2 out. The latest MacBook Pro will also feature an FHD 1080p webcam which is a nice improvement. The new MacBook Pro with an M2 processor promises improved performance from its 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. I rather not discuss Apple's promised percentages of improved performance until our crack team of testers gets their hands on the review units.

The Apple WWDC 2022 announcements that really matter (Stuff)

A new MacBook Air, the M2, a newish MacBook Pro, and a bunch of OSes naturally.

It’s hard to say whether this will satisfy our long-running gripe about external display support on iPad. During Apple’s demo, Stage Manager made the iPad display look claustrophobic, and we’d like to use all of an external display for one iPad app. The new medications app looks handy, and there are new features for sleep and running tracking. Ish. With iOS 16, Apple’s letting you fiddle with the Lock Screen so you can add a row of tiny widgets. The new MacBook Air (from £1249) gets an M2 chip and looks like a 14in MacBook Pro that’s cut down on carbs. Imagine the M1, only more so (except when it comes to external displays – the M2 still only supports one). The CPU is up to 18% faster. It’s the week devs dig into how to make the best new apps and games.

The latest MacBook Air comes with Apple's new M2 processor and major design improvements. Pre-orders are not live yet, but prices start at $1199.

Apple is also introducing the MacBook Air to MagSafe power this generation, freeing up its two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Coupled with webcam improvements in the upcoming macOS Ventura, the MacBook Air will likely become a leading work from home device. Apple took this opportunity to revisit the design of its leading laptop, moving away from the classic wedge shape to a flatter, more uniform chassis. If you buy them, we may get a small share of the revenue from the sale from our partners. Apple unveils its car at WWDC – sort of (RCR Wireless News)

Apple took the wraps off new Macs, a new CarPlay and more at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this week.

WWDC gave Apple an opportunity to reveal new versions of the operating systems for its watch, iPad and Mac coming this fall. Apple will begin selling the new laptops starting in July at the same price as existing models and has discounted the existing 13-inch MacBook Pro to make room for the new models. Apple touted iCloud Shared Photo library at WWDC as a convenient new way for families and friends to share memories. Apple’s emphasizing new productivity features like Stage Manager to better manage the clutter of many open apps. Apple received fierce criticism earlier this year for the webcam in its premium-priced $1,599 27-inch Studio Display, which users said produced very low-quality images. Apple, a long-time Arm licensee, developed its own custom silicon to power the iPhone and the iPad. But for years, Apple’s Mac computers continued to use microprocessors made by Intel and a succession of Intel and third-party graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia and rival AMD. Apple said 98% of new car models sold in the U.S. support CarPlay — in its current implementation. Which ostensibly gives CarPlay app makers a year or so to get things with the new tech right, before people start messing around with their custom dash designs. Apple Inc. kicked off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday with an ambitious vision of CarPlay’s future, and promised buy-in from automakers, though it’ll take a while before new features actually make it to cars. As with other tech giants, Apple uses its developer event to frame both public and developer expectations. But Apple’s new CarPlay implementation is certainly a much more ambitious and complete reach than Android Auto. Apple introduced a lot of new technology this week, but it’s probably worth noting what Apple didn’t introduce: Any new Augmented Reality (AR) headset or VR device.

WWDC 2022 predictions: What we got right and what we didn't (ZDNet)

WWDC's keynote did not go entirely as we predicted. In fact, we got some of the biggest announcements wrong. Here's our post-mortem.

Perhaps Apple is planning to introduce a new case design, but given the taller (but identical footprint) of the new Mac Studio, I'm guessing Apple's going to stay with that design. With the relatively recent introductions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, I didn't expect Apple to want to rev their base model. But the big update for iOS 16 is a highly-customizable lock screen, and that didn't show up in my crystal ball. But Apple did announce two new colors: Starlight (which is like rose gold, without the rose and not much gold), and Midnight (which is something like a 90% black). I did say that if Apple was going to update the MacBook Air, they would have to improve the terrible 720p camera, and they did. I predicted more workout modes, and there are indeed some big improvements in the fitness arena. The key thing to note is that the M2 will be the new base-level processor as of next month. The new MacBook Air has an 18% performance improvement over the M1 Air and sufficient battery power to fuel video playback for a whopping 18 hours. When it comes to colors, I said, "with a low (but greater than zero) probability, the new MacBook Air might come in iMac colors." In terms of screen improvements, I was half right and half wrong. Apple is using the M2 as the base point for its incremental processor upgrade strategy going forward. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services.

The new Macbook Air is the first Mac to have the M2 chip, which is Apple's most powerful processor. That includes an improved display to make it a better second screen, along with a new app called Freeform which is like a shareable blank canvas for real-time collaboration. All-around improvements to watchOS make the Apple Watch a major standout in the fitness tracking game. iOS 16 has major improvements to Maps, an "always-on" lock screen with widgets, new Wallet and Apple Pay features, real time iCloud photo-sharing, and updated parental controls. First and foremost, we have to pay tribute to the man who carried this event on his back, because most of it was actually pretty boring. Throughout the two-hour event, Federighi shocked and delighted a captivated audience with his commanding presence and committed wholeheartedly to several bits that you know Tim Cook never would've agreed to.

What it was like attending WWDC '22 at Apple Park (Fast Company)

Developers flock to the WWDC keynote to see Apple's newest software, but there's a gentle seduction going on, too.

But as I approached I noticed that the PR people and media had somehow cleared a large circular space in front of the door. All around the table people were lined up two and three deep, waiting to get some time with the new iThing. After two years of COVID, I wasn’t keen on standing so close to so many people I didn’t know, but I did it anyway, and got a quick demo. Then Tim Cook walked in and stood in the middle of the circular space smiling and waving as camera shutters clicked all around him. It turned out to be a hands-on session with the new MacBook Air laptop held on the top level of the Steve Jobs Theater. About 20 of the machines were set around a big circular table, each one attended by an Apple employee. I heard a couple of enthusiastic rounds of applause (one for the return of the MagSafe plug on the new MacBook Air, one for the new CarPlay design that will fill up the whole instrument panel of new cars), but no wild ovations for new innovations they didn’t see coming. At the same time, the developers in the crowd at the keynote were far from rowdy, as Apple developers have been during WWDC keynotes past. In a clearing in the trees just next to the Apple Spaceship, the company sat out perhaps a thousand canvas beach chairs in front of a large stage with a big monolithic video screen and a fancy sound system. The keynote, in some ways, seemed like a throwback to the pandemic years. The new products and features developers saw today were demo’d by human presenters in the videos. Event greeters are always friendly, but this year Apple’s seemed to have dialed the cheerful up a couple of notches. Every time a group of developers approaches the entrance gate, the greeters let out a big “Whoooooooo” and begin clapping. They’re everywhere; you’re never more than 15 feet from one–or a clump of 10— of them, from the time you park your car to the time you leave.
