All Whites ready to 'seize moment' in Costa Rica clash (1 News)

There's every reason for Costa Rica to be confident in the World Cup qualifier but the All Whites are just as prepared to rise to the occasion.

“We’ve got a great group of players at the moment, they’re injury-free, they’re in a good space mentally, that’s why we need to seize the moment now. They’re 31 in the world playing against 101 in the world. I’m sleeping pretty well, I’m not sure their coach will be though," Hay said.

Live updates: All Whites v Costa Rica World Cup qualifier (1 News)

Join us as New Zealand and Costa Rica play for the final place at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

In a late blow to the New Zealand squad, Callum McCowatt and Marco Rojas have both been ruled out of the All Whites squad due to illness. Clayton Lewis with a decent delivery but Chris Wood can't get a clean header on it. Positive response from the All Whites. Wood attempts a second but Navas smothers it. Despite have nine Costa Ricans in and around the box, the Kiwis are finding chances - they just need one to stick. Reid reads it and thumps into touch. Much better from Costa Rica. They find some space down the right wing and cross it in. Reid with another great read defuses the corner. All Whites earn a free kick, it's a great ball for Wood who creates the space, gets contact from the scrambling defender and goes down. Garbett gets the ball, fires in to a lonely Wood and he comes up with the finish. Two minutes to be added for the first half. 45min: NZL 0-1 CRC

Still positive signs for the Kiwis though as Costa Rica again are slowly creeping back into their defensive shell after starting this second half more centrally. It's a superb strike but it's matched by the veteran Costa Rican goalie. The crowd are starting to get into it now as the desperation starts to mount.

Live: All Whites trail after VAR denies goal (New Zealand Herald)

All the action from the intercontinental playoff between the All Whites and Costa Rica. Updating... Alert. ↓. 14 minutes ago. Joel Kulasingham.

Danny Hay rolled his own replacements, with Barbarouses (Garbett) and Ben Waine (Greive) just after the hour. Smart work from Garbett created space down the left, with the ball eventually falling to Wood, who finished unerringly into the net. There were more chances, with Garbett and Tuiloma both having shots charged down, before the big flashpoint of the half. Greive probably should have equalised in the 12th minute, as he anticipated a Wood knockdown, but the St Mirren striker flashed his shot just wide of the far post. All of New Zealand's plans went out the window in the 3rd minute, with the terribly soft goal. The New Zealand support was much more modest – a few hundred from Europe, the Gulf, Australia and some hardy ones who had arrived from home.

"Ultimately it was fine margins. The All Whites responded well and thought they'd scored an equaliser through striker Chris Wood late in the first half, only for the goal to be ruled out by the video assistant referee, with a New Zealand player deemed to have committed a foul in the build-up.
