Hidden patios to seek out at Asheville restaurants, bars, breweries (Asheville Citizen-Times)

ASHEVILLE - Outdoor dining options increased amid the COVID-19 pandemic, adding to an already appealing feature of Asheville's dining and drinks scene.

It’s also where guests can find a full bar, additional bar and table seating, music and a curated garden wall of botanicals and garnishes used for cocktails that help set the scene. Make the climb up two flights to reach the “secret” door obscured by a historic map of Asheville that leads out to the rooftop patio overlooking the South Slope district and mountains. Soon, the brewery will open a kitchen for guests to order dishes to go with their craft beer. After 7 p.m., Alta 39 is open to guests ages 21 and up and offers Mediterranean tapas, craft cocktails, beer and wine. Alta 39 takes the dining and imbibing experience up a notch at Harvest Pizzeria, 39 Banks Ave. The rooftop is open seasonally during business hours at the family-friendly pizzeria. The courtyard is distant enough to block noises made by traffic and passersby, Piper said.

The 70-year-old's four-year mandate will come to an end on August 31.

The prevailing climate of impunity is fueling further violence and violations,” she said. In her speech, Bachelet said her office was working on an updated assessment of the human rights situation in Xinjiang.

Bachelet won't seek 2nd term as UN human rights chief (ABC News)

The U.N. human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, says she will not seek a new four-year term after the current one that has been overshadowed by criticism of ...

Last week, Human Rights Watch relayed a statement from over 230 activist groups representing people from Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and other places in China calling on Bachelet to step down. After a brief news conference in China as her trip ended on May 28, Bachelet used Monday's speech to the rights council to provide new details about her conversations with authorities there. The World Health Organization has lamented that Pyongyang hasn't provided enough information about the outbreak there. But critics said she hasn't spoken out enough, and during the visit didn’t press authorities enough. Rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani confirmed that meant that Bachelet, a former president of Chile, would not be seeking a new term after the current one ends on Aug. 31. Her office repeatedly said she and staffers were working to create the right conditions for the trip, which ultimately took place last month.

On the rights situation in Russia, she said the arbitrary arrest of a large number of protesters there opposed to the invasion of Ukraine was “worrying”. In her speech, she said her office was working on an updated assessment of the human rights situation in China’s western region of Xinjiang, where there are widespread allegations that mostly Muslim Uyghur people have been unlawfully detained, mistreated and forced to work. Bachelet made a trip to China last month for which she was criticised by rights groups as well as some Western governments, including the United States, who said conditions Chinese authorities imposed on the visit did not enable a complete and independent assessment of the rights environment.

CATES: Slip, slop, slap, seek, slide - Odessa American (Odessa American)

By Carol A. Cates, MSN, MBA, RN. Chief Nursing Officer. Odessa Regional Medical Center. I cannot remember a year growing up that I didn't get a bad sunburn ...

When it comes to skin cancer, the best thing we can do is prevention, by practicing sun safety. ACS recommends you speak to your primary health care provider about how often you should check your skin but went on to say most physicians recommend a skin self-check once a month. The most common cause of skin cancer in the US is UV light exposure from the sun or artificial tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US with more than 63,000 new melanoma cases (the deadliest form of skin cancer) every year. The annual costs of treatment in the US for skin cancer is about $8.1 billion dollars. But now, especially after seeing my brothers and cousins have skin cancers, or pre-cancers removed, I have gotten to be a sun safety fanatic for myself and for the people in my life.

Ketanji Brown Jackson to 2022 grads: 'Always seek to learn ... (The Washington Post)

The Supreme Court justice-designate didn't mention politics during the speech to her daughter's graduating class.

Quoting White’s “The Once and Future King,” the judge said: “‘The best thing for being sad,’ replied Merlin, ‘is to learn something. She advised them to intentionally make their own life decisions, to “choose their own adventures.” She warned the graduates that they would face pressures to conform to what others are doing or to what they think might be expected of them. Each year, the private school — located in a wealthy neighborhood of Northwest Washington — chooses a parent to deliver a speech to students. I do not believe in any of that,” she answered at the time. Jackson issued a sweeping defense of her involvement in the school, saying that it’s a private institution and that any parent who enrolls a child there does so willingly.

Stars align for Cuban migrants as record numbers seek better life in ... (The Guardian)

The journey to America, often via Nicaragua, has become more viable – and many are taking their chances at the border.

Criminal groups know that they will have paid thousands to get this close, and most likely have family in the US to fork out a ransom. They can now buy a $4,000 one-way ticket to Managua and then make their way overland to the southern border. Meanwhile, Cuba has stopped accepting flights carrying “excludables” from the US, leaving the Biden administration with no way to deport. Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy towards Cuba, mostly left in place by the Biden administration, succeeded in driving down people’s living standards. Following a crackdown on protesters who flooded the island’s streets in unprecedented numbers last summer, some Cubans are emigrating for political reasons. “We all know he drowned,” said Camilo Soria, 22, a childhood friend.
