Guregian: Celtics star Jayson Tatum fails to rise in first NBA Finals (Boston Herald)

Jason Tatum basically had milk carton status in the biggest game of the Celtics improbable run to the championship series.

The good news is there’s still time for Tatum to ultimately be that guy. And the Celtics star wasn’t comforted by thoughts of having a bright future, using this as a learning experience, and possibly a motivator going forward. Figuring that out, getting to where some of the veterans are that have seen everything and took their lumps early in their careers.” He was also asked if the shoulder impacted his performance in Game 6. He didn’t enjoy having to take some lumps, and wouldn’t use the shoulder as an excuse for his struggles. Throughout the season, and in the first few series, Tatum did a good job figuring out how to counter the multiple different coverages used against him. The hope is, the narrative will change. Udoka summed it up by saying Tatum still had to learn and understand who he is as a player, and he should count on other teams treating him just like the Warriors did. He didn’t hit 30 points in any of the Finals games. Tatum mustered just two points during the final 24 minutes of the game. Al Horford also did his best to will the team to another comeback, with 19 points. Moreover, Tatum now owns the NBA record for most turnovers in a single postseason with 100.

It's tough. You don't want to feel like this again, but you want to get back here,” Tatum said after the Celtics lost to the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

That they’ll take this loss, internalize it, and use it to fuel their internal combustion engines. This is just a start.” He did that throughout the first few series. The great what-if for Tatum and the Celtics is what if he had played to his normal standard? He’s also not the first Boston star to come up short. Magic Johnson was mocked as “Tragic Johnson” in the 1984 NBA Finals. He let the Warriors maneuver him to their spots all series, looking tentative and indecisive. … It stings that we kind of didn’t play to our potential. The Celtics young superstar flopped on the NBA’s biggest stage, and not in the Marcus Smart manner of tricking officials. Tatum spiked the ball in frustration. As Stephen Curry stood on a stage constructed on Jayson Tatum’s home court to officially crown the Golden State Warriors as NBA champions, he said that this championship hit different. Unlike parquet partner Jaylen Brown, who went down shooting with a 34-point night, Tatum signed off with a whimper.

I feel like I could have done a lot of things better,” Tatum said postgame.

He was very strong in Game 3, the last game Boston won in this series, with 26 points and nine assists. Draymond Green knows it, and he was hinting at it Wednesday when he went on his deep dive into why playing against the Celtics in the finals didn’t compare to playing against James in four finals because of James’ intelligence. But Tatum could not lead Boston where it needed to go in any of the last three games, and the finale was a clunker. “I think this is the next step for him. He, of course, evolved into one of the best to ever play, including in the finals, where he’s won four championships and reached 10 finals overall. For as good as Tatum has been for years with the Celtics, this is the first season in which he played without a true point guard. Brown is a contemporary of Tatum’s, for sure, but Tatum is the face of the franchise, and his first finals just didn’t work out for him as he had hoped. “I think just our level of poise at times throughout this series and previous series, myself included,” Tatum said. LeBron James experienced his first finals at age 22, and, if it’s any solace to the Celtic faithful, it was miserable for James. The San Antonio Spurs smothered him in a 2007 sweep, limiting him to 22 points on about 35 percent shooting with 23 turnovers. Tatum alone should not be blamed for the Celtics losing this series in six games, and internally he won’t be. Tatum now holds the record for most turnovers in the playoffs, with 100. “He did that throughout the first few series.

And it's not like Tatum is unproven in big moments - he was massive for USA Basketball last summer in the gold-medal game win over France. He added a third basket in the first quarter to give the Celtics a 22-16 lead, but that was their last basket before getting overrun by an avalanche of 21 straight Golden State points. Some fans cried out for him to go get the ball, but even when he did, it just didn't work out down the stretch. "It's just tough getting to this point and not accomplishing what we want to," Tatum said.

Jayson Tatum Unable to Overcome Turnover Issues | SLAM (SLAM Online)

The Boston Celtics were once again plagued by their turnover problems in Game 6. The Warriors turned Boston's 22 turnovers into 27 points on Thursday.

Tatum and Brown have proven to be a dangerous duo at the wing. In 18 games, the 24-year-old averaged 27 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. The Celtics are winless in the playoffs when they turn the ball over at least 15 times.

This is only the start of how you’re going to be guarded and the attention you’re going to draw,” Udoka said. “This is tough, getting to this point and not accomplishing what we wanted to. The best thing that could happen to the Celtics for the foreseeable future would be Tatum leaving this series angry. He’s got to be more mature, tougher and probably a little nastier. To his credit, he didn’t blame his injured shoulder. This is just a start. When he hit the buzzer-beating game-winner in Game 1 against the Nets, it looked like a springboard to something special. Against a standard for most NBA players, Tatum had an amazing year: All-Star. First-Team All-NBA. Led his team to the Finals. He is the face of one of the most successful and storied franchises in all of sports. Tatum sounded more sad than mad Thursday night: “I could have done a lot of things better. His son is more recognizable than most professional athletes in the region. Tatum had just 13 points in the game. When the Celtics badly need a superstar-caliber performance from their best player, Tatum shrunk.

Jayson Tatum has been a relative Iron Man in comparison, playing 76 games this season and going over 70 three times out of five years. Tatum has already been deep into the playoffs, now including a trip to the NBA Finals. When the New Orleans Pelicans start winning consistently, Ingram will get more recognition.

Despite holding a 2-1 series lead in the 2022 NBA Finals just over one week ago, Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics saw their championship hopes disappear ...

He’s not planning on putting on another show at Dodger Stadium this summer for the All-Star Game. Judge said Thursday that he will not be participating in this year’s Home Run Derby. “Nope. No need, I already did it once,” Judge told The New York Post on Thursday. “I’m all good with that.” Judge leads MLB with 25 home runs this season, which would make him a natural fit for the Derby. But the 30-year-old slugger participated in the event in 2017 as a rookie and won. Hey, it's got to be the right fit for me, right fit for the team. D.C. had been a host the previous two times the World Cup was held in America. FedEx Field held games during the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Meanwhile, the old RFK Stadium did so during the 1994 World Cup. The Cup’s field will expand to 48 teams for the first time in 2026. It seems to be the front office's opinion that 2022 is going to be a punt of a season as well. Game 6 took place in Boston, which means that the Celtics faithful had to watch the Warriors celebrate a title on their home floor. "I just want to prove to myself, more importantly, that I'm capable of doing the job and winning, winning in the postseason. Falcons NFL Odds for 2022 Season To Win Super Bowl: +20000 To Win NFC: +10000 To Win NFC South: +1500 Win Total: 4.5 (Over -105/Under -105) Fade the Falcons in 2022 It's not just the oddsmakers and I who have no faith in the Falcons this year. Barkley has never been as productive as he was when he was a rookie and led the NFL in yards from scrimmage, but there is a new coach in town though and he was able to give the Bills a dynamic running attack. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the "good bets and value" to win the rushing title this season. The Raiders made a major addition to their passing attack in the form of WR Davante Adams and I love QB Derek Carr to have a great season but the new coach always made sure the Patriots were running the ball effectively when he was there and most of the time he did not have a back as good as Jacobs to work with. "What happened with Jayson Tatum is what he did to Kevin Durant in the first-round: he got punked. Despite holding a 2-1 series lead in the 2022 NBA Finals just over one week ago, Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics saw their championship hopes disappear on Thursday night, as the Golden State Warriors celebrated inside the TD Garden for their fourth title in eight years.

Hurley: Let's not bury Jayson Tatum's career, people (CBS News)

Regardless of whether it's a strong surge or a minor squeak, I'll nevertheless come out and say this: Please do not use this NBA Finals to conclude that ...

If he continues on that pace, and the Celtics continue to build around him, the championships will surely come. That years and years of second-round exits await the franchise? A star player winning in his early 20s as the best player on his team can happen. That team just made it to the NBA Finals, and though they lost the series, they did so to the best team of their generation, a Warriors team that has now won four of the last eight titles. That the 24-year-old Tatum and the 25-year-old Jaylen Brown weren't quite ready to topple the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals does not mean their careers are doomed. Obviously, preaching patience doesn't do much for TV and radio ratings, and they wouldn't sell newspapers, if selling newspapers was still a viable term in 2022. Everything about Jayson Tatum's career trajectory has him projecting to be among the very best players in the NBA for the next five, seven, maybe 10 years. Tony Parker was 21 ... but he had Duncan. Kawhi Leonard was 23 ... but he had Duncan and Parker. Dwyane Wade was 24, but like Kobe, he also had Shaq. Sure, Kobe Bryant did it, but he had 28-year-old Shaquille O'Neal lighting the way. Is it the radio hosts? The radio callers? He's not a real superstar.

He's only 24 years old, and he made it to the Finals while tying for fourth in playoff value over replacement player. Right. As he matures, he'll get a better feel for when to make plays for others and when to really look for his own. From a macro level, the moneyballing of Tatum's game over the last few years has been a plus. Sure, it's probably smart to focus on getting free throws, layups and threes, but three-level scoring is exponentially more important in the heat of the postseason. A few more mid-range looks wouldn't hurt, but they shouldn't come at the expense of good shots from beyond the arc. Or, more importantly, who he can become. Tatum was great against the defense of Wesley Matthews, P.J. Tucker, Jrue Holiday, Kevin Durant and Jimmy Butler in earlier rounds this postseason. He made the All-NBA First Team and finished seventh in scoring. “[The] majority is over-penetrating, playing in the crowd, as I talk about quite often. Each of the efforts below his on that list took place between 1947 and 1961. Instead of trying to finish through contact (like Stanley Sugarman taught Bo Cruz to do), Tatum seemed more intent on exaggerating it. Forget measuring up to Stephen Curry. Tatum probably wasn't even on Andrew Wiggins' level.

The Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum Could Have Had His Moment (The New York Times)

Tatum, the 24-year-old Boston Celtics forward, learned the hard way during the N.B.A. finals just how much it takes to be a championship-level leader.

“The growth he showed as a playmaker this year and in certain areas, I think this is the next step for him,” Udoka said. Boston lost the final three games of the series, committing 15 turnovers in Game 4, another 18 in Game 5 and a painful 22 in Game 6. He also struggled to finish at the rim. “We all could have done things better,” Tatum said. The Celtics scored 120 points in Game 1, their highest scoring game of the finals. Tatum already has a notable résumé. He has been named an N.B.A. All-Star for the past three seasons. His turnover numbers were lower than most of the players with better scoring averages than he had. They roared through the second half of the season and claimed the second seed in the East. “He did that throughout the first few series. A few minutes before, Tatum had to endure the indignity of watching another team, Golden State, celebrate winning a championship on his home court. He had not been at his best during the finals, often guarded by Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins. In the clinching game, Tatum scored only 13 points with 7 assists and 3 rebounds, while committing 5 turnovers. BOSTON — With a little more than a minute left in Game 6 of the N.B.A. finals, Celtics Coach Ime Udoka pulled his starters.

This isn’t the first time this has happened to an NBA star the Warriors faced in the playoffs this year, either. Fast forward to 2022, and Tatum’s Celtics made it all the way to their own Game 6 against the Warriors in the Finals. They weren’t able to stop Steph Curry & Co. from winning their fourth title in eight seasons, though, and Tatum’s post from 2015 eerily predicted his own fate that would come less than a decade later. Back in 2015, Tatum was a high school junior watching Golden State face off against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals. The Warriors would go on to win in six games, something Tatum accurately predicted with his tweet.
