Episode one of This is Going to Hurt got a lot right for me. The obstetric emergencies were realistic and harrowing, and made me anxious from start to finish. The infrastructure is not fit for purpose, buildings are crumbling, staff are burnt out, overworked and underpaid and ultimately patient care is compromised. The culture is more toxic in the surgical specialities. It’s a bleakly comedic, raw and unsettling look at the lives of junior doctors working on an obstetrics and gynaecology ward in a London National Health Service hospital. In general, I’d say the culture in NZ hospitals is better than depicted on the show.
