Cirelli crossed in front of Kuemper to make it 1-1 at 13:03 of the opening period. The Avalanche lifted Kuemper after Maroon scored a soft goal that put the Lightning up 5-2 with 8:45 remaining in the second. They’re looking to do it again against Colorado to complete their quest for the NHL’s first three-peat in nearly 40 years. The Lightning managed 16 shots in Game 2. The Tampa Bay goalie gave up eight goals in last year's Stanley Cup Final win over the Montreal Canadiens. Tampa Bay went on to win four straight games once it produced a victory in the series. Colorado scored the opening goal on the power play in the first three minutes and owned a three-goal lead at the first intermission. Colorado seems poised to sweep the Stanley Cup Final in what would be its third 4-0 series win of the postseason. Another poor start at home would doom the Lightning's fate in the Stanley Cup Final.

2022 NHL Awards feature Cup Final foes Makar, Hedman up for ... (NHL.com)

The matchup between Cale Makar and Victor Hedman has been one of the highlights of the Stanley Cup Final.

There are a lot of amazing players that have had really great years, so to be nominated as one of the three means a lot." I think I did a pretty good job." "Whether it's the regular season or the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NHL certainly knows how to put on a show, and I'm honored to be a part of it again," Thompson said. Markstrom was 37-15-9 with a 2.22 GAA, .922 save percentage and an NHL-best nine shutouts in 63 games. "It's a big honor, obviously, to be there in the same sentence as some of the guys nominated," Matthews said. Bunting led all rookies with 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists) in 79 games, Zegras (61 points; 23 goals, 38 assists in 75 games) was second. "After a two-year hiatus, we are excited to welcome the NHL Awards show back with Kenan as host," NHL chief content officer and executive vice president Steve Mayer said. "Just keep doing it, keep playing well and working hard. McDavid led the NHL with 123 points (44 goals, 79 assists) in 80 games. I owe everything to this organization and my teammates." Playing for this team is such an honor and without my teammates I wouldn't be in this situation. Makar had 86 points in 77 regular-season games and his 28 goals led NHL defensemen.

This is the stepping stone to what projects to be a solid and long NHL career, which should really take off once the Wings turn the corner. The case for: For all the same reasons Shesterkin is a Hart Trophy finalist, he is a standout at his position here. This may be the most interesting vote of the night and is surely to stir debate no matter the result. The case for: No goalie had a heavier lift than Saros this season. Makar's 1.12 points per game mark is also the No. 2 challenger to Josi's 1.20 in the cap era. In a season of offensive explosions around the league, Matthews' sheer force of goals is hard not to reward. With Hedman on the ice, Tampa scored over 61 per cent of all goals. Even more impressive: the 59 even-strength points Josi accumulated were the most by any blueliner since Paul Coffey got 90 in 1985-86. The case for: The Art Ross winner, McDavid finished with 123 points, tied for third-most in cap era history. “With all eyes on the game’s best players, we hope to also recognize these great individuals whose presence in Tampa is sure to be an emotional highlight of the evening.” Truly "most valuable to his team", when McDavid was on the ice this season, Edmonton outscored its opponents 151-71; when he was off, the Oilers were outscored 180-134. It's important to remember that all votes were cast before the start of the playoffs.

NHL Trade and Free Agency Tracker: Ethan Bear could be a steal ... (PensBurgh)

CAR has given RFA Ethan Bear permission to talk to other teams. From what I hear, Hurricanes still wish to sign Bear, but two sides are not close on an ...

Carolina still needs third pair defensemen for next season, and as of now they have the cap space to match such a deal, if they want to do it. Which means, for best results of actually getting the player, the proper way to accomplish that is via a trade. It feels silly to accomplish the same thing (move a player) for virtually the identical cost, but that is the way they do business. If that is the case, many teams should be interested in what Bear could bring to the table, and the Penguins should be among them. Time is ticking and Bear has the right to file for arbitration next month. Pittsburgh doen’t have their 2023 third round draft pick (it was traded as part of the move to acquire Jeff Carter last year), which complicates just what they are able to offer. The tricky part of the situation would be dealing with Carolina to get Bear out of there. First, it’s never a good business practice in the ego-driven world of how NHL general managers operate to sign another team’s free agent. They “still want to sign him” according to reports, even if he was also on the outside looking in for the playoffs, and the team already has three important defenders locked up (Jaccob Slavin, Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei) and presumably will need to devote some money to re-signing Tony DeAngelo as well. Bear will likely draw interest from a variety of teams, and a Western destination might be preferrable for Carolina. However, there still are some indications he has the skills and ability to be a contributing NHL player. Bear, who celebrates a 25th birthday this summer, has already been in the NHL for three full seasons and parts of a fourth.

Maple Leafs rookie Michael Bunting, who was notable for being 26 years old, was third in the voting. He led all rookies in assists (43) and power-play points (21). He led the NHL in even-strength goals (44), goals per game (0.82) and shots (348). He was tied for sixth in points with 106 -- the highest total of his career. Shesterkin led the NHL with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage in 53 games, leading the Rangers to 110 regular-season points, the third-highest total in franchise history. The closest vote of the night was for the Norris Trophy, given to the NHL's best defenseman by the PHWA. Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar won his first Norris with 1,631 points in the voting, with 92 first-place votes. He led all rookie defensemen in points (50), the third-highest for a first-year blueliner in the last 30 years. "They scheduled their vacation and there were just not any more days to escape from home," he said. He is the second American-born player to win it, joining Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane (2015-16). McDavid and Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi were the runners-up for the Ted Lindsay. Shesterkin won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender, which is voted on by the NHL's general managers. "It means a lot for me," said Shesterkin, who completed his third NHL season. He set a Maple Leafs franchise record and the single-season record for most goals by an American-born player. "Every time you get your name etched in history, with an organization like that, it's something I don't take for granted."

About six years later, the results of Makar’s continuing hockey education are clear. He was still a kid learning about himself, the world and the game of hockey. The former Calder Trophy winner (2019-20) becomes Colorado’s first Norris recipient in franchise history. It was news to Makar and Conley. They hadn’t left the basement, where their bedrooms were. Someone had crashed a car into the backyard fence. The problem is, traditional metrics are only so telling about a goalie’s actual performance and lack context, yet those tend to heavily weigh into the conversation. With a handful of NHL awards, the definition and interpretation varies by voter. The 24-year-old won this season's Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal-scorer, posting career highs with 60 goals and 46 assists. In his Vezina trophy-winning season, Igor Shesterkin saved 37.2 goals above expected + earned 38 quality starts and nine stolen wins. There have been only three goalies to win it in the modern era. It’s not just the goal scoring. Colorado's Cale Makar wins the Norris Trophy as the best defensemen in hockey.

Lou Lamoriello of the New York Islanders was the back-to-back winner in 2020 and 2021. On Tuesday, fans also learned that there will be a first-time winner for the 2022 Jim Gregory Award as the NHL’s general manager of the year. With a live awards ceremony for the first time in three years, the NHL opted for a scaled-down, more intimate event. Despite his position as a blueliner, Josi also led his team in scoring for the third-straight year. Shesterkin, 26, finished fifth in voting for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year last season. Decked out once again in his signature bow tie, Seider admitted to not having a speech prepared and gently chided his parents for not being on hand in Tampa to see him collect his award, as they had been on vacation in Croatia. In the end, his win was assured. He eked out the victory by a margin of 1,631 to 1,606 points. His 96 points this season were a career high for him, and the most by a defenseman since Phil Housley put up 97 with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1992-93 season. A surprise selection at sixth overall in the 2019 draft, Seider’s 50 points ranked him fourth among all rookies this season, and third among all first-year blueliners in the past 30 years. But Tuesday’s wins may come as a bit of a surprise to the casual hockey fan. Matthews became the first player in a decade to hit the 60-goal mark in 2022, collecting his second-straight Rocket Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer. It’s the first win in both categories for the 24-year-old.

NHL's embrace of Pride Tape has meaningful, lasting impact (NHL.com)

The NHL will once again celebrate Pride Month this June. As part of the celebration, Jeff McLean, the co-founder of Pride Tape, has written a first-person ...

When we can empower our supporters by giving them the tools to supercharge their creativity, it amplifies the much-needed messages for equality and inclusion in sport. All players of any ability have the power to make even the smallest impact by simply wrapping their stick with Pride Tape." Some inclusive groups around the world, including the Seattle Pride Hockey Association, attribute their inception to Pride Tape. Co- founder Joey Gale states, "The impact of a global organization like the NHL using its platform for positive social change in the LGBTQ+ community is truly moving. The real lift happened as hockey fans from around the world rallied around Pride Tape. Our initial campaign reached 6.5 million people through social media. But thanks to an initial phone call with the NHL, our simple roll of multicolored tape transformed into global impact. The idea for Pride Tape as a visual badge of support from the hockey world to young LGBTQ+ players originally came out of research indicating that sexual minority youth were less likely to play organized team sports because of homophobic and unwelcoming environments.

NHL announces 2021-22 All-Rookie Team (NHL.com)

The National Hockey League announced today the 2021-22 NHL All-Rookie Team, including the three players voted as finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy as ...

Raymond placed among the rookie leaders in goals (t-2nd; 23), points (3rd; 57), assists (4th; 34), shots on goal (4th; 184) and shooting percentage (8th; 12.5%) while playing in all of Detroit's 82 games. Zegras, who dazzled the hockey world with highlight-reel assists and goals, finished second among rookies with 23-38-61 in 75 games - single-season franchise records for assists and points by a rookie, ahead of Cam Fowler (30 in 2010-11) and Bobby Ryan (57 in 2008-09), respectively. The fourth overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft, who paced rookie forwards in both average (18:09) and total (1,488:52) time on ice, also finished among the leading rookies (forwards and defensemen) on the man-advantage, ranking among the top three in power-play points (2nd; 18), assists (t-2nd; 13) and goals (t-3rd; 5). Raymond and Seider are Detroit's first All-Rookie Team representatives since goaltender Jimmy Howard in 2009-10. Carrier, another fourth-round pick in the NHL Draft (115th overall in 2015), ranked third among rookie defensemen with 27 assists and 30 points in 77 contests (3-27-30), both franchise records for a rookie blueliner. Swayman yielded two or fewer goals in 24 of his 41 total outings (58.5%), highlighted by a trio of shutouts: Dec. 2 at NSH (42 SV), Feb. 12 at OTT (30 SV) and Feb. 28 at LAK (34 SV). He is the Bruins' first All-Rookie Team selection since defenseman Charlie McAvoy in 2017-18 and the first Boston goaltender to make the squad since Andrew Raycroft in 2003-04. The ninth overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft, Zegras topped NHL freshmen with 19 multi-point outings en route to placing among the rookie leaders in power-play goals (1st; 9), game-winning goals (t-1st; 5), goals (t-2nd; 23), assists (3rd; 38), power-play points (3rd; 17), shots on goal (5th; 181), power-play assists (t-6th; 8) and shooting percentage (7th; 12.7%). Zegras is the Ducks' first All-Rookie Team selection since goaltender John Gibson in 2015-16 and the third Anaheim forward to earn the honor, joining Ryan (2008-09) and Paul Kariya (1994-95). Swayman, a fourth-round pick (111th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, led rookie netminders (minimum: 25 GP) in wins (23), goals-against average (2.41) and save percentage (.914) across 41 appearances. Bunting led all rookies with 23-40-63 in 79 games to help power a Maple Leafs offense that ranked second in the NHL with 315 goals - the team's most in a season since 1989-90 (337). Bunting, who recorded the third-most points in a season by a Toronto rookie behind only Auston Matthews (40 29-69 in 2016-17) and Peter Ihnacak (28-38-66 in 1982-83), found the scoresheet in 44 of his 79 appearances (55.7%) to also place among the top 2021-22 rookies in assists (2nd; 40), plus/minus (2nd; +27), goals (t-2nd; 23), shots on goal (6th; 175) and shooting percentage (6th; 13.1%). The 2014 fourth-round pick (117th overall by ARI), who signed with the Maple Leafs last July, is Toronto's first All-Rookie Team representative since his linemates - Matthews and Mitchell Marner - both earned the honor in 2016-17. Seider - a unanimous selection - paced rookie defensemen with 7-43-50, a point total surpassed by only two rookie blueliners over the last 30 years (Quinn Hughes: 8-45-53 in 2019-20 w/ VAN; Vladimir Malakhov: 14 38-52 in 1992-93 w/ NYI) and just two rookie defensemen in Detroit history (Reed Larson: 19 41-60 in 1977-78; Nicklas Lidstrom: 11-49-60 in 1991-92). Seider, the sixth overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft, led all 2021-22 rookies (forwards and defensemen) in assists (43), power-play assists (19) and power-play points (21), while ranking among the top five in shots on goal (3rd; 187), points (4th; 50) and game-winning goals (t-5th; 4). He played in each of the Red Wings' 82 contests to also lead all rookies in total time on ice (1,889:22) and minutes per game (23:02) - franchise rookie records in both categories (which have been tracked since 1997-98). Following is a summary of each NHL All-Rookie Team member's outstanding campaign: Carrier also placed third among all rookies in blocked shots (t-124) and average time on ice (20:59), with the former setting a Nashville record for a rookie defenseman and the latter ranking second only to Dan Hamhuis in 2003-04 (22:08). Carrier is the third player (and first defenseman) in Predators history to make the All-Rookie Team, following goaltender Juuse Saros in 2017-18 and forward Filip Forsberg in 2014-15. He led the Predators and finished third among all rookies (forwards and defensemen) with a +26 rating, a team record for any rookie skater.

Ross Colton said on the "NHL @TheRink" podcast that the Tampa Bay Lightning had a brief team meeting in the locker room right after losing 7-0 in Game 2 of ...

Confidence-wise, it was big, but in the same breath we did some video today and they still had a ton of offensive zone pressure and there were still things we need to clean up. It was big obviously but there is still some work to be done." "It was obviously big for our confidence because that was more or less a must-win game. "It was just right after the game," Colton said. "There is a little bit of momentum, but like I had mentioned before with coming back to home ice, just because we won last game, doesn't mean there's an automatic, 'We're going to win the next game'," he said. Just because we're coming home, doesn't mean we're going to win.
