All of them shall become free agents in the league. This is not the end of Sotto's NBA dream, though. Filipino Kai Sotto went undrafted in the NBA 2022 Rookie Draft on Friday.
Kai Sotto's bid to become the first homegrown Philippines player to enter the NBA remains unfulfilled after 30 teams passed on the 7-foot-3 center.
Not all hope is lost for Sotto, though, as he tries to get an invite for the 2022 NBA Summer League slated to start on July 7. Sotto later went to the United States to train with The Skills Factory, an Atlanta-based development program that opened up pathways. The son of former PBA veteran Ervin kickstarted his basketball career with St. Francis of Assisi before standing out in the Jr. NBA and making his way to Ateneo in 2016. He joined the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago in February 2020 and then the G League developmental team Ignite in May of the same year. There, he played three seasons of UAAP high school basketball and won a title, a Rookie of the Year award, an MVP trophy and a Finals MVP award. A return to Adelaide is also on the table, as he still has two more years (with the second a team option) left on the original three-year deal that he signed with the 36ers last year.
Teams passed on Sotto in the draft class that saw Paolo Banchero and Chet Holmgren picked first and second, respectively.
ON FRIDAY morning, Manila time, fans waited hours to hear one name called out in this year's edition of the NBA rookie draft. But it was not to be.
And that's an achievement that no one will be able to take from him. Kai Sotto’s NBA hopes remain a dream. Check out these other tweets about Kai Sotto in the morning of the big day.

MANILA, Philippines — Kai Sotto won't be playing in the 2022 NBA Summer League in July after committing to play for Gilas Pilipinas.
He needs to play. He needs to play. He’s gonna pass up the Summer league and play with the Philippine national team,” he added.
Sotto had a shot at making history as the first Filipino selected in the NBA Draft on Thursday, June 23 (Friday, June 24, Manila time), but even if that didn't ...
“The next step I really have to think with my family. We didn’t get to Plan A, but we got Plan B. It’s not going to stop me. “There are certain things NBA teams look at. I think that’s where I lack at, and that’s where I have to improve on to have a spot on an NBA team.” It’s not a signal for me to stop, but to keep on going.” “He’s going to pass up Summer League and play with the national team,” said Bell, noting that Sotto received several Summer League invites.
Jeremy Lin has urged Kai Sotto to keep believing in his NBA dream after the 20-year-old Philippine prospect went undrafted on Thursday.
"To me, it's a benchmark for where you are today but it's not at all an indicator of where you will be down the road." And then there's so many people don't get drafted and then fall in. (pauses) because there's so many people that get drafted and fall out.
Contrary to what his agent, Joel Bell, revealed during their interview on News5's PlayItRight TV, the 7-foot-3 Sotto said that skipping the Summer League next ...
The basketball agent also said that Sotto won’t also take two-way or exhibit 10 contracts from the NBA or even play in the G-League. Bell said in an earlier interview that Sotto has several offers to play in the off-season showcase, but the 20-year-old won’t join to play for the Philippine men’s basketball team. MANILA, Philippines — Kai Sotto has clarified that there is no final decision yet on whether he will see action in the NBA Summer League or not.

We want to stash you on a team outside the United States. He can go back to Australia, there are other teams in Europe that are interested,” said the agent. He needs to play,” he added. “This is just a speed bump. With the route looking in the Land Down Under or Europe, Sotto knows what he lacks and what he needs to work on more to get another chance in the NBA. “With the two-way contract, you’re not gonna play, he needs to play.
It has been a dismal afternoon for Kai Sotto and the Filipino basketball fans after the 20-year-old prospect was not included in the 2022 NBA Rookie.
In an interview with ESPN Asia, Jeremy Lin shared that the NBA Draft was just one way for a prospect to enter the big league. It's just the start of a long ...
Lin also tells Sotto that having a non-traditional road to the NBA is not something to worry about as he assured the former 36er that he will eventually find a home if he continues to work on his game. “I just hope that he continues to believe in himself, stay confident, keep working hard, and just trust that as long I stay consistent, I will find a home,” he added. Now on separate paths, the now 33-year-old Lin hoped that the 7-foot-3 big man would continue doing what he needed to do in order for him to achieve his biggest goal — to make it to the NBA. The Taiwanese-American went undrafted in 2010 before he was given a huge break a year later by the New York Knicks. It has been well-documented that he was sleeping on his teammate’s couch during the time he was given a 10-day contract by the Knicks. Lin is living proof of that sentiment as he had the same path on his way to the big league. In an interview with ESPN Asia, Jeremy Lin shared that the NBA Draft was just one way for a prospect to enter the big league.

Big names like Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren, Jaden Ivey, Jabari Smith, and Keegan Murray were the first top-five picks in the draft but Kai Sotto, the Filipino ...
Although playing in Europe is out of the equation for Kai, it is not entirely peculiar for an Asian to play in the Euro League. Most Filipino stars nowadays prefer to play outside the country (e.g. Japan and Taiwan) to improve their level of play. With Kai Sotto going undrafted, the G-League could also be a possible road for his redemption. It could also help that he had the previous workout with teams like the Kings, Hawks, Cavaliers, Knicks, Magic, and the Pacers. Do you think he should sign up for the Summer League? We’d also like to think him going undrafted was inevitable because, for one, he was not invited to the draft combine; and second, he was going under the radar of most scouts because of his lack of exposure. In the Summer League, Kai Sotto can still show up and showcase his skills and talent alongside some of the best rising stars in the league. The NBA is a dream for all hoopers from all parts of the world.
