Chamika lifted Sri Lanka from 85 for 8, putting up stands with Pramod Madushan and Maheesh Theekshana.

Karunaratne then struck his two sixes - one over deep midwicket, and another one down the ground, both off the legspin of Labuschagne. Then he skied a short one off Cummins, and the innings was done. Karunaratne prospered on the legside, and got to his first ODI half-century off the 62nd ball faced. Madushan played sagely and stayed with him, seeking largely to turn the strike over and let Karunaratne make the big plays. And although Tuesday's centurion Charith Asalanka appeared to be working himself nicely into the innings, he was run out thanks to a mix-up with Kusal Mendis. Asalanka hit the ball wide of sweeper cover and wanted two. Karunaratne batted positively from the outset, finding the boundary with paddle sweeps, slog sweeps, and lofted shots down the ground. He lifted Sri Lanka from an embarrassing 85 for 8, to 160 all out, striking up a 58-run ninth-wicket stand with debutant Pramod Madushan, before striking big blows in the company of No. 11 Maheesh Theekshana.

At one stage Sri Lanka lost four wickets in the space of seven deliveries for the addition of just six runs. “It was the momentum that we took from the last T20 game. Apart from Karunaratne, none of the Sri Lanka batters posted a decent score. It could have been a lot worse for Sri Lanka without the ninth-wicket partnership between Chamika Karunaratne and debutant Pramod Madushan which was worth 58 runs. Some fans wore yellow jerseys to thank the Australian team who toured the island amid uncertainty owing to the economic crisis and political instability. That was the difference.”

When Sri Lanka are up and about, that’s as loud as anywhere you’ll visit in the world.” Aaron Finch has paid tribute to Sri Lankan cricket fans after they turned Colombo’s largest stadium yellow on Friday night to thank Australia for touring the country despite the economic crisis. Later that year, Australia refused to play a two-match Test cricket series in Sri Lanka in August. “It was outstanding, the Sri Lankan people are wonderful people,” Finch added. “The support that they provide is second to none.
