Bolter Kate Heffernan named in Silver Ferns, Selby-Rickit ... (RNZ)

Kate Heffernan is poised to debut for the Silver Ferns in Birmingham with a 12-strong team announced for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

They have responded to what has been asked of them and delivered under pressure. Former captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio, who has been racing against time to regain her fitness after having her second child, has not been named in the 12, but is down as a reserve. The pair have been mainstays in the side for the past couple of years and Winders was last year named Silver Ferns' player of the year.

Silver Ferns team announced for Commonwealth Games (New Zealand Herald)

A 12-strong New Zealand netball team has been announced to represent their country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

We have a job to do in Birmingham but we're also looking forward to being a team within a team and to be a part of something big. "Well done to the 12 athletes selected today to represent New Zealand and it's exciting to see such a strong team ready to get on the plane to Birmingham," she said. "Being a part of the greater New Zealand team and being a part of some of the unique traditions at the Commonwealth Games will be a new experience for many of these players.

Joining Jury in defence were Sulu Fitzpatrick, Kayla Johnson and Phoenix Karaka. After Ekenasio, Metuarau and her Pulse team-mate Maddy Gordon were two of most notable omissions. Taurua said Nweke had been cleared to play in that game, and the final if the Mystics had made it, but had further work to do to be ready for international play – and a Commonwealth Games campaign where the Silver Ferns will be on court seven times in 10 days.

The country's top netball shooter will return to her first sporting love this week, after missing out on the Commonwealth Games squad.

It's my go-to but I definitely need to expand on my skill-set. Of the premiership’s top-10 shooters, only the Steel’s George Fisher matched her percentage. “I need to add some variety.

Steel midcourter Heffernan Games-bound (Otago Daily Times)

She joins fellow Steel star Shannon Saunders in the midcourt, alongside former Steel wing attack Gina Crampton, who will captain the team, and Central Pulse ...

She has signed to play for the Tokomanawa Queens in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa league, returning to a sport she excelled at as a junior. Her time with the Silver Ferns last year was all in New Zealand, while her international cricket appearances for the White Ferns were also at home. Indeed, her comment that a completely different set of 12 players could have been named and still made a strong squad was perhaps the most poignant pointer to the depth in this team. Despite that, she had still been surprised when she was told she had made the team. In the past, she had struggled to execute what the coaches had wanted her to do at trials, but this time, she felt she nailed it. That debut is surely imminent, and the centre-wing defence said she was excited to get going.

Silver Ferns' midcourt kept Dame Noeline awake at night (RNZ)

Welcome to a new era of the Silver Ferns, where an athlete can be named the player of the year one year and be left out the next.

"What she brings to the team both on and off court and that's unwavering. But we have both Tiana [Metuarau] and Meels [Ekenasio] in the reserves if something shall happen." "I'm really pleased that it resulted in a really tall team right through-out court. "We need shooters that have volume or could put the shot up. She had an outstanding trials and probably showed the shift that she's made in her feeding as well," Dame Noeline Taurua said. How can they extend themselves and improve their skill-sets."

The “biggest winner” and most notable omissions of the Silver Ferns ... (SEN)

SENZ netball expert Storm Purvis has given her thoughts on Dame Noeline Taurua's Silver Ferns squad to compete at July's Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

“I understand Kayla was actually sick last week and didn’t even travel down to trials so clearly it was just a name that Dame Noels had in her head from the get-go, as soon as she knew Karin was out, she just locked in Kayla.” “With Karin Burger being ruled out prior to trials of Comm Games with that foot injury, I think Kayla is definitely the name that has been the biggest winner, so to speak. “I think Kayla Johnson is a name that I wasn’t really expecting to be there,” Purvis said on SENZ Mornings.
