Silicon, foam latex, and a whole lot of lube - Stranger Things season 4 Makeup Effects Department Head Barrie Gower reveals the origins of Vecna.
It’s rare that you’re given the opportunity to design the look of a character like Vecna. And it’s super rare to get to work with an actor like Jamie. He really, really embraced the character from day one. And the finish of the colors as well. The overall gloss was definitely an effort to capture the environment of the Upside Down. It’s why we finished with this kind of gloss-like gel that we would smother Jamie in at the end of the application. Even though we had these beautiful designs from Michael Mayer at the start, we also looked at a lot of real life references – anatomy of animal life, sea life, all sorts of colors and textures, really. They digitally animated his left hand for a large portion of his scenes with the fingers penetrating into skulls and what have you. We’re already massive fans of Stranger Things so to get the call and become a part of the show has been insane. Ideally they were looking at an actor in prosthetics who could interact with the rest of the cast and would be there for them to film in front of the camera every day. Was this Billy? Was it Hopper? It wasn’t until several weeks later when they shared some pages and we read some scenes and then we were privy to the fact that it was Jamie’s orderly character Number One. They already had concept art and some blueprints that were created by their concept artist in the VFX department, Michael Mayer. They had these beautiful illustrations of Vecna. It’s actually very close to what we see in the final show now. They were looking for an iconic character and it was going to be their first (monster) who was more humanoid in form, less creature-like as such as some of the previous creations had been. What follows is the full story of Vecna was conception to first kill and beyond. Striking that careful balance is precisely why Netflix and the Duffer Brothers turned to Gower and his team in the first place.
Fans have seen Max Mayfield (played by Sadie Sink) playing the song ceaselessly in her head while struggling to process her brother's death.
There’s there’s a specific reason that supermarkets play some music – you know, it forces you into a state like, ‘I’m gonna buy this now.'” At one point, Campbell Bower’s Vecna tries to invade her mind, only to have Kate Bush come to the rescue. Even Jamie Campbell Bower who plays evil Vecna in the latest season of Stranger Things admits he has succumbed to the power of Kate Bush and her song “Running Up that Hill” which has had such an extraordinary effect on both the show’s characters and its fans.

I can now kind of go, ‘Well, we can do whatever we want,’ and then we’ll just make that work in a live setting. On Stranger Things: “People should watch Vol. 2 because if you are a fan of the show, what you will see in this next volume is something that you’ve never seen before from Stranger Things: the world and the universe keeps on expanding. There’s more character development, you get to understand a lot more, and a lot of questions will be answered in this in this second part.”
'Stranger Things' makeup artist Barrie Gower has told NME about the six- to eight-hour process it took to create Vecna.
“Why not stick to the theme that’s already in the show? And so I would go with that. “It was a really lengthy process of generating the 25 different moulded pieces that made up his makeup,” he said.

A Stranger Things step-by-step guide to how Vecna was created, from hours Jamie Campbell Bower spent in prosthetics chair to design changes.
‘He’s probably one of the most extensive prosthetic makeups we’ve done as a company, because he is covered from head to toe. It took approximately seven hours to apply Jamie’s makeup every day, which consisted of a four-man team of Barrie and three other artists. So effectively every day was like a workout for him.’ It was a lot of weight for him to wear every day. He was always excited and just happy to be there as we all were. I mean, just his head and shoulders were several kilos,’ Barrie responded. So we were able to give him actual extended fingers.’ ‘They had a special undercarriage that we could pop open, so Jamie could go to the loo, and the big long finger extensions had to be detachable and removable, so he would have his hands free as well in between setups,’ Barrie said. ‘That was housed into a sort of under-glove that he used to slip on every day, and then that had a prosthetic glove sleeve that went over the top of that. ‘So even though we had an image and a blueprint of this character that we could work very closely to, it wasn’t until the role was cast and they cast Jamie Campbell Bower – and that would have been January of 2020 – Jamie came to our studio and we took a full body lifecast of Jamie so we could create a full body copy of him, and we could sculpt the Vecna prosthetics over that.’ ‘It wasn’t until we had Jamie’s full body that we realised that we had to make a few changes here and there, a few nuances and compromises that were made to the original design that would just enable us to house this character over Jamie’s forms,’ Barrie recalled. ‘They were very keen to return to a lot of the traditional techniques of the 1980s of having prosthetics and a character in a makeup, rather than approaching it from a visual effects, digital point of view.
