Ben Kay brands Scott Barrett 'lucky' after dangerous clear out missed (Pundit Arena)

Ben Kay believes All Blacks flanker Scott Barrett was a "lucky boy" not to be shown a card for a dangerous clear out on Peter O'Mahony.

Referee Karl Dickson penalised Barrett for a dangerous clear out on O’Mahony as he said he didn’t use his arms, but decided that he had made contact with the body of the Ireland flanker.

All Blacks star's 'sickening' challenge against Ireland sparks furore ... (WalesOnline)

New Zealander Scott Barrett's clearout on Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony has come in for intense criticism.

Then, in April of this year, the Crusaders captain was red carded again for a shoulder to the jaw of Blues prop Alex Hodgman. It remains to be seen whether a citing will follow from his latest contentious act. In 2019, he was red-carded for a shoulder to the neck of Australian captain Michael Hooper, becoming only the fourth New Zealander to be sent off in Test rugby. If the referee somehow misses this - which by some inexplicable miracle he did - then the TMO shouldn’t. The compression of the neck is sickening. I mean what is he there for if not to deal with things like this? Penalised for no arms clear out, referee said he thought it to the body. Former WalesOnline rugby correspondent Delme Parfitt commented: “The ref is three metres away staring at it.

However, had he been shown a red, a ban would have followed, which could have had a major bearing on the rest of the series. It came in the 75th minute with Ireland on the line of the All Blacks. Barrett launched into opposite man Peter O’Mahony, and was immediately penalised by referee Karl Dickson for a no-arms clearout, which it was, but it was much worse than that. This is concerning a clearout by All Blacks flanker Scott Barrett late in the second half against Ireland on Saturday at Eden Park.

Ref Karl Dickson was standing two metres away as New Zealand flanker Scott Barrett jumped the gun and drove his shoulder into the head of Peter O'Mahony.

It was a thumping 23-point win and Ireland have physical and mental wounds to heal before the Second Test. As it transpired, Scott Barrett was allowed top play on. A penalty eventually came Ireland's way, but Barrett was allowed to play on.

He had a chip and chase and managed to push the ball back for Ardie Saves to storm up in support and score. It’s always challenging coming in with sort of 10 days preparation to face this match. It’s a good start today for sure. Ofa Fainga’anuku drove close before Aaron Smith’s crisp delivery cut out Beauden Barrett and found Jordie Barrett for the AB’s opener. Ireland could have easily gone further ahead but for a crucial intervention by Beauden Barrett. If the referee somehow misses this – which by some inexplicable miracle he did – then the TMO shouldn’t. The compression of the neck is sickening.

Watch: Scott Barrett's dangerous tackle on Peter O'Mahony (Extra.ie)

New Zealand flanker Scott Barrett avoided punishment despite hitting Peter O'Mahony with a dangerous no-arms high clear-out tackle.

The dangerous hit occurred right in front of referee Karl Dickson - who had been a source of frustration for O'Mahony during the contest. O'Mahony, who was trying to claim possession from the ruck, received a highly-physical blow to the back off his head and neck as a result of the hit, before falling to his back. Barrett, guilty of wreckless play in the past, shouldered through the head and neck of O'Mahony with a forceful no-arms tackle at the breakdown.

This is of course the cleanout by Scott Barrett on Peter O’Mahony. Having never beaten New Zealand between the years 1905 and 2016, Ireland of late have become somewhat of a rival to the Kiwis with three wins in the last five meetings. In what was a by and large competitive fixture, the All Blacks blitzed Ireland for four tries in the space of fifteen minutes as they reminded the world that when given a sniff, they are utterly lethal.
