Philanthropist's 'extraordinary' $50m donation for mental health unit (New Zealand Herald)

A concentration camp survivor turned philanthropist will donate $40 million-$50 million towards a new acute mental health unit at Hutt Hospital.

We've also allocated $87 million to grow the mental health workforce, on top of creating more than 900 new frontline roles currently funded for GP and community clinics," Little said. The project is being managed by Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand. "I am glad to have had the opportunity to personally thank him for this donation and for the $50m he has already donated towards a new children's hospital for Wellington." "It's just an incredible contribution to the Hutt Valley and an incredible contribution to the region on top of what we've already seen with the children's hospital." "This is just fantastic news at a time when Hutt Hospital has obviously not had the greatest of news in the last couple of months," he said. Lower Hutt mayor Campbell Barry said he and others were "lost for words" when the announcement of the donation was made.

An agreement was signed with the Ministry of Health about six weeks ago for the project to go ahead. Wellington Free Ambulance and the Graeme Dingle Foundation have been beneficiaries of their philanthropy, among many other charities. Little, who was unable to attend the Gold Awards because he has Covid-19, said he had thanked Dunajtschik earlier for this donation and for the $50 million he has already donated towards the new children’s hospital for Wellington. Dunajtschik is usually a hands-on developer. He and Spotswood are a team of two who work every day getting involved in the minutiae of every aspect to a build. Speaking before the event, Dunajtschik said he wanted to use his wealth for the benefit of the community.
