The characteristic rash, which typically looks similar to chicken pox, appears after a few days. The Ministry of Health is working with Pharmac to explore options for access to smallpox vaccines that can be used as part of the targeted prevention of spread of monkeypox in certain situations. "When that resolves, you get an outbreak of these pox legions which, in some cases can be quite widespread, and then, when you have these pox legions you could be contagious, so people can pick up monkeypox if they have contact with you if you have those lesions." "There are some kinds of monkeypox that cause more severe disease with a fatality rate of - even as high as 10 percent - and then there's other strains that have a fatality rate on the order of sort of 1 percent, well this particular outbreak it's even less; it seems to be much milder outbreak with less number of lesions." The monkeypox disease could have a fatality rate of up to 10 percent, Krause said, but the strain to have reached New Zealand was much milder. Health authorities say the first confirmed case of monkeypox in New Zealand is "not unexpected" given the increase in global cases.

The infections in Portugal were picked up at a sexual health clinic, where the men sought help for lesions on their genitals. The World Health Organisation estimates there are thousands of monkeypox infections in about a dozen African countries every year. The Associated Press reported that in 2003, 47 people in six US states had confirmed or probable cases. "We will likely get more cases but numbers will be nothing like Covid-19. People will need to be on the lookout if they may have been exposed. The characteristic rash, which typically looks similar to chickenpox, appears after a few days. There are at least two strains of monkeypox. There was no evidence of community transmission here, but a very small number of contacts were being advised to watch for symptoms. The ministry said cases of monkeypox outside endemic countries have primarily been identified among gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men, and international cases have been clustered around events where this occurs. Isolated cases of monkeypox are spotted outside Africa, including in the US and Britain, but the cases have typically been associated with travel to Africa or contact with animals from areas where the disease is more common. It's the first time monkeypox appears to be spreading among people who didn't travel to Africa. Most of the cases involve men who have had sex with men. The ministry is working with Pharmac to explore options for access to smallpox vaccines that can be used as part of the targeted prevention of spread of monkeypox in certain situations. Monkeypox is a virus that originates in wild animals like rodents and primates and sometimes jumps to people - mostly in central and west Africa, where the disease is endemic.

Explained: Five things to know about monkeypox in NZ (New Zealand Herald)

Since a cluster of the viral disease was confirmed in the UK back in May, the outbreak has grown to more than 8000 cases and spread to 57 countries as far-flung ...

New Zealand has just become one of more than 50 countries to record cases of monkeypox in an outbreak that took off two months ago. In the meantime, the ministry advised people to practise good hand hygiene after contact with infected people or animals, and avoiding contact with any materials, like bedding, that have been in contact with them. The ministry was now working with Pharmac to explore options for access to smallpox vaccines that could be used as part of the targeted prevention of the spread of monkeypox in certain situations. "By nature, sexual activity involves intimate contact, which one would expect to increase the likelihood of transmission, whatever a person's sexual orientation and irrespective of the mode of transmission." "It can be transmitted by close physical contact or by droplets ... but the suspicion is that the cluster that's emerging in Europe has been spread by sexual contact." "Yet, they are a bit like the elephants of the virus world - their structure and replication make them easier to aim at than smaller, moving targets." But experts stress that we shouldn't worry. We, fortunately, don't appear to be dealing with the former, and genomic sequencing has linked the virus behind this outbreak to a West African clade that appeared in earlier international outbreaks. Since a cluster of the viral disease was confirmed in the UK back in May, the outbreak has grown to more than 8000 cases and spread to 57 countries as far-flung as Venezuela, Iceland, Latvia and South Korea. With the World Health Organisation recording a 77 per cent jump in cases in the past week - and now considering whether the outbreak should be called a public health emergency - this global flare-up appeared to be only getting started. "But at the moment, this is effectively an imported disease and we'd put it in the general category of tropical infection. "Once we reached that many cases in the world, and Australia was recording 20 of them, we were always going to see it in New Zealand ... I don't think there was any ever question of that," Otago University epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker said.
