“And again, at St. Andrews, if he does his deal, he’s one of the best iron players to ever play, if not the best. Speaking on Sirius XM on Wednesday, Couples said: “I talk to him every night and when he tells me things, you know, some are top secret. It would be awesome to win an Open here,” he said. But when he talks about his game, he says, ‘I am driving it really, really well. Woods pulled out of the PGA Championship after three rounds due to his leg, then skipped the US Open to prepare for The Open. By his own assessment, Smith has “played the best golf of his life” this year and is no stranger to contending at the majors with four top-five finishes since making his 2015 debut.

2022 British Open leaderboard breakdown: Cameron Young, Rory ... (CBSSports.com)

The top of 150th Open Championship leaderboard is stacked, but you'll find Tiger's name at the other end.

Making the cut will be a difficult task as a round in the mid 60s will be required, but all eyes will remain on Woods. Spieth has the creativity and skill to succeed at St. Andrews, and he will have every opportunity to prove that across his second round. "I did everything that you're supposed to do around St Andrews. I birdied the holes that are birdieable, and I made pars at the holes where you're sort of looking to make a par and move to the next tee. I think I'm going to play really well the next few days." While that means his greatest asset -- his driver -- is taken out of his hands, he will be more than fine with that if the results materialize as they did in Round 1. Instead of letting it bother me too much, and then I try to go for a stupid shot to gain back what I lost." He carried this prowess into the opening round, and it is now time to see if he can replicate it over the next 54 holes. And I think with the humps and hollows, it becomes quite unpredictable and just something that I've learned over the years." He is long and straight off the tee and credits getting over to Scotland a week early as a reason for his success in the first round. I'm happy that, as far as I know, I'm still leading The Open Championship, but it's not going to change how I feel an hour from now. I mean, it might change how I feel on the 1st tee a little bit tomorrow, but I'll forget about it very quickly." The PGA Tour rookie has been tremendous this season, finishing runner-up three times and in a tie for third at the PGA Championship, yet he came into this week having missed his last two cuts.

“It didn’t feel too great to be honest because of the bad start,” said Scott, who faces a quick turnaround for his morning tee-time of 8.14am (5.14pm AEST) after taking more than six hours to complete his round. Johnson joined the group on four-under with a birdie at the 18th and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler also finished on that mark in the next three-ball. He made his first move on the second hole, draining a huge putt from the raised part of the green on the second hole. Jason Scrivener had a decent day of it, too, playing in the more difficult afternoon conditions and finishing at level par. Robert Dinwiddie of England joined Smith at five-under as one of the last players to complete his round. I don’t think that I played a perfect round of golf.

Live scores, updates and highlights from the second round of the historic 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews.

That was actually the first and only major championship at which Young has made a cut (0-4 otherwise), though he's sure to double that up at St. Andrews, whether he goes on to become Champion Golfer of the Year or not. The 25-year-old former Wake Forest golfer has yet to win a tournament on the PGA Tour, but a T3 finish at the PGA Championship a couple months ago raised eyebrows about his long-term potential. The hope entering the 150th Open at St. Andrews was that Tiger Woods would some way, some how play himself into contention in what may be the 15-time major winner's last time playing his favorite course. Meanwhile, others such as Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka and Matt Fitzpatrick will be fighting just to make the cut. With a star-studded field playing, the Old Course serving as a historic backdrop and the pressure on given this is the final major of the year, the 150th Open Championship is already shaping up to be one to remember.

The 150th Open Championship from St Andrews continues with Day 2 action , with Rory McIlroy just 2 shots off the lead and Tiger Woods out in the morning ...

To day two of The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. I'm Fergus Bisset and I'll be taking you through the first couple of hours of the action. A westerly to start with and maybe a spot of rain, the wind switching to a northerly later in the day. I got it up in the wind a bit from about 50 yards and it too fell in the water. Ryan Fox has just got one to back up on the 2nd... Yesterday I said I'd never seen it before when Kurt Kitayama bounced it off the railway sleepers on the edge of the Swilcan Burn and it came straight back towards him... It really is only just on the green over the Swilcan burn. It's just the way it is on The Old Course because of the crossovers and the fact players are often hitting onto adjacent fairways. He needed to get it over a large mound to reach the pin... I heard a rumour that one of them faked having a hole-in-one on the 8th, just for the photo opportunity! I attended the BOSS golf day in the build up to The Open.. It was a crazy affair with something like 50 influencers (which I am not by the way) descending on the Old Course. There was one chap in a string vest doing somersaults on the 1st tee.. I once played with a chap who thinned his drive along the ground, it hit into one of the forward tee markers, pinged back over our heads and out of bounds.. It's day two of The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. Cameron Young of the USA leads the way after round one following a superb 64.

Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite as he tries to end an eight-year major drought, though +1000 seems like a short number with such a stacked field. He gave a shot back at the 8th. His best finish in the Open is second in 2008, four shots behind winner Padraig Harrington. Xander Schauffele, a winner in his last two starts on the PGA Tour, is the second favorite at +1400. Here's a quick look at the favorites and notables, according to the SI Sportsbook: Here are some other notable groups (all times eastern): The 2012 U.S. Open champion finished T19 at last year's British Open and his best finish in the championship is a T12 in 2018.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – It was past 8 p.m. as Rory McIlroy made the eastward turn toward St. Andrews' final hole, walking out of the shadows cast by the Old ...

McIlroy said he isn’t concerned with the names who stand atop major leaderboards, even if they are THE PLAYERS champion, a two-time major winner, the world No. 1 or some of the game’s rising stars. Friday’s raucous roars would simply serve as an appetizer for the reception that McIlroy would receive with a win Sunday, following the footsteps of European legends like Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo in crossing the Swilcan Bridge en route to lifting the Claret Jug. Five hours earlier, McIlroy had doffed his cap in a show of respect directed at Tiger Woods as Woods walked down St. Andrews’ finishing hole for what may be the final time. They compete with the knowledge that their accomplishments will be remembered for generations, serving as inspiration and worthy of enshrinement. “It doesn’t matter what name is beside the 13 under.” There’s a bit of hyperbole to that statement. Greatness is McIlroy’s lone concern at this point in his career. Woods calls St. Andrews his favorite course in the world. Three years ago, his countrymen tried to cheer him to the weekend in the Open’s return to Northern Ireland, a tournament whose significance extended far beyond golf. The grandstands couldn’t fit all the interested observers who wanted to see him finish his round. He’d just made an unlikely birdie on the Old Course’s most penal hole, the one that forces players to overcome both a blind tee shot lined with O.B. and an approach shot over a sand-filled pit. McIlroy was in contention this time, though, just three shots off the lead.

2022 British Open leaderboard breakdown: Cameron Smith rockets ... (CBSSports.com)

There's a new leader at the 150th Open Championship, and it's a familiar face whose been on top plenty this season.

Viktor Hovland may have a say in this matter as well as he just holed out for eagle on the par-4 15th to also reach 9 under. This week will mark his best chance to date to capture one of the four big ones as he came in with a bit of momentum having finished inside the top 15 at the U.S. Open and is within reach of the lead. Instead, dropped shots on the easy par-4 ninth and par-4 12th squandered any momentum as he finished with a round of 2-under 70. Raising a trophy alongside Xander Schauffele at the Zurich Classic, Cantlay also boasts six top-five finishes in 2022, including last week at the Scottish Open. Despite his consistency, there are those critical of Cantlay as he has yet to match his talent level to production in major championships. After that, kind of once we made the turn, I made a good swing on nine, and after that I hit most of my shots close to how I wanted to. T3. Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland (-10): There is a bit of a Spiderman meme going on with these two as Hovland reminds me of a young McIlroy to an extent. He will begin the weekend five strokes off Smith's lead but has proven to be comfortable coming back from a significant margin as his victories at the Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational featured weekend runs. 2. Cameron Young (-11): The Open debutant began his second round with a bit of nerves as he made bogey on his second hole of the day. Yet, in order to succeed, the two will need to swap places as Hovland could use a bit more patience and discipline and McIlroy a bit more freedom. Five of the last six 36-hole leaders at The Open have gone on to win, and Smith should give a fine effort over the weekend in continuing this trend. For a player who has done a bulk of his major championship damage solely at Augusta National, Smith has taken exactly what works at the Masters and implemented it in this year's Open. The second round of the 150th Open Championship featured a little bit of everything on Friday. It began with fans sending Tiger Woods off in the grandest of fashions as the 15-time major winner's playing career at St. Andrews may have come to a close with a missed cut this week.

The top of the leaderboard after two rounds at the 2022 Open Championship features a quarter.

Mickelson has now missed the cut in each of his last three major tournaments. St. Andrews was the site of Woods' first two British Open titles in 2000 and 2005. I want to thank this place for all the memories it has given me, and to the fans today for having the walk up 18 be added to that list. Things didn't go as well for some of the biggest names in the field. Although I am disappointed to be heading home, I had an incredible week at St Andrews celebrating 150 years of history and the game we love. The Northern Irishman's round consisted of six birdies, including three straight from Nos. 10-12. The peak of Smith's second round was an eagle on No. 14. A birdie on the Road Hole?
