Countering Bigotry in the Indian Classroom (The Wire)

Young people (teenagers, especially) are open to reason and there is a very good chance they will listen to facts if we will but dialogue with them calmly, ...

It is tempting to fear that in the face of Hindutva’s relentless propaganda onslaught our youth are all but lost to critical thinking, but this is not true. (It was interesting to note that there were no Muslim students in this class.) We finally arrived at the conclusion that it is wrong and dangerous to stereotype people by religion or community. The thing I had been afraid of had happened. And then I said, “By the way, this friend of mine that I’ve been talking about, his name is Zartab bhai. The poison of communalism had entered their minds and homes. This time, to my consternation, I saw something I have never seen before in the pile – copies of Panchajanya, the RSS publication that openly advocates the idea of a Hindu rashtra. He is a Muslim and he did all this while keeping his rozas. As they were making their collages, the topic of ancestry came up amongst a couple of them. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant closure of schools, however, brought a two-year hiatus in these sessions. I decided to hold my peace and see how things developed. One of the activities during this workshop involves students cutting and pasting pictures from magazines and newspapers and making individual collages depicting their hopes, dreams and unique personalities. It is aimed at helping teenagers find their own unique voice and identity, and deal with the existential angst that invariably accompanies the adolescent years.

Dr. Jessica Massonnié, School of Education and Sociology, says that their "findings are important because they question the assumption that children who are perceived as difficult to engage in schoolwork 'do not care' about distractions'—they do particularly care. Results show that these children accumulate multiple risks to learning—they are more likely to have difficulties engaging with school work, staying still and focusing, while at the same time being more vulnerable to distractions. Teachers were given seventeen statements about each child's attentional focus, impulsivity, behavioral control and ability to engage in school work, for example—"pays attention", "says the first thing that comes to mind."

The pictures, music and laughs are a sure-fire way to bring your classroom to life. Another activity I use to help students feel more comfortable in a new classroom. This activity also helps the students feel like the classroom is their space, too, and this is crucial for creating that sense of safety and belonging. I invite students to add their song requests to a Google sheet ( just like this one), and I use those suggestions to create a Youtube playlist that I can play before class, during passing periods and sometimes in class, too. I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to begin a new school year. I really want to stress the importance of that last bit.

Not only are laws like this discriminatory and harmful in themselves, but they also pave the way for further gutting of public education. They are not, however, allowed to acknowledge that racism is currently a part of American society. Is it okay to refer to racism from 10 years ago, or is that too current? Palm Beach County has asked teachers to complete a “Classroom Library Checklist” to see if their classroom library conforms with new legislation. Previously, most of these elementary school classrooms have had a robust book collection for students to choose from during silent reading time or when they finish an assignment early. Brevard Public School teachers were told to pull their classroom libraries entirely until every book in every classroom could be vetted by a library technician.
