When the Commonwealth Games get underway, seven athletes will try to follow up a world title with an event repeat in Birmingham.
McIntosh prevailed over American Katie Grimes, a fellow teen, at the World Championships and has been sub-4:30 in the event. Several Canadian stars, including Penny Oleksiak will not be in attendance after racing at Worlds, but Masse has decided to remain in action. But she’ll have her hands full at Commonwealths, as reigning Olympic champ and countrywoman Emma McKeon enters the fray after passing on Worlds. More, Aussie Shayna Jack will be in the mix, if her broken hand from a freak warmup incident in Budapest has healed. He won the world championship comfortably in 2:07.07 and with no rival seeded under 2:08 in Birmingham, Stubblety-Cook is in minimal danger. His biggest threats will be fellow Aussie Mack Horton, the 2016 Olympic champion, and South Africa’s Matt Sates, one of several teens who have the sport excited about the future. Seven individuals, including four Australians, will look to follow up a world title from last month in Budapest with a Commonwealth gold medal in Birmingham, England.

"We went into the hotel and we were walking around Birmingham and we were the only ones with masks." Barbados Chef de Mission Cameron Burke has praised "the Organising Committee for the relaxation of the COVID protocols as it builds that closeness", and Birmingham 2022 has insisted that it has implemented a "proportionate response to the pandemic". "His CT score is going higher which is a good thing, so we're just going to wait and see what happens. "As far as being able to compete or not, we're just following this process," the Chef de Mission said. "He's asymptomatic, so we're just going to work through the process and take things step by step." A New Zealand athlete is isolating after a positive test for COVID-19 prior to competition at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Chef de Mission Nigel Avery revealed here.

“I think we all play a team sport for a reason. “I reflect back, so we had the home World Cup in 2018, that was relatively early in my career as well. So often we're having a bit of a break, like a break week or a few days off so people can be where they want to be, if they want to be with friends and family. And I think obviously, we'll sit them down and we'll speak to them and just try and get them to think like obviously this experience is amazing and take it all in but try to not let it overwhelm you. She follows me everywhere, so she's definitely the first one.” “It's taking me a bit of time to get used to but obviously I've got a lot more experience now so I feel I need to use my voice and use my experience and don't hide away from that.

"My view is it's all about improving that and growing it and keeping the momentum flowing. "They're learning to live with Covid, which I'm sure many other parts of the world are and no doubt New Zealand will, so maybe it's a window into the future." He had a bit of a giggle so he's in good spirits," Avery told the Herald on the banks of one of Birmingham's many canals.
Chef de mission Nigel Avery said there was a process to go through before the athlete would be cleared to compete.
"Some of those in the lawn bowls group were in tears. That's what we want in the villages and we're seeing that." "We want to make sure that the person is going to be okay. So we've had a 14 day test, the mandatory 72 hours before you arrive in Birmingham test, and they're tested on arrival," Avery said. Avery said there was a process to go through before the athlete would be cleared to compete. One New Zealand athlete is in isolation in Birmingham days out from the Commonwealth Games but chef de mission Nigel Avery says the team is in a good position overall.
At Comm Games, Kylie Masse and Kaylee McKeown will battle for the top two spots of the 50/100/200 back. Will anyone be able to breakup the superstar duo?
It’s a tossup between McKeown and Masse in the 100 back, but in the 200, McKeown clearly holds the edge. This isn’t a reason to count her off the podium, but is something to keep in mind. At 17-years-old, this is McGill is coming off European Juniors for her debut Commonwealth Games. McGill’s made huge strides in this event over the last year. They’ll be without the familiar presence of Regan Smith in the next lane, but Masse and McKeown are the heavy favorites in the 100 back. Masse and McKeown are all but a lock for gold and silver; the only question is which medal goes to which swimmer. Still, she’s put up a competitive enough time to be in the medal conversation. Here, we’ll get a look at her form in an event where she’s the world record holder in the short course meters edition. With Worlds finalist Ingrid Wilm racing at Canadian Championships, the only other Canadian in the race will be Maggie MacNeil. At Worlds, MacNeil only competed in relays to prioritize her mental health and recover from her elbow injury. Another swimmer who didn’t race backstroke at Worlds is Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan. In Budapest, she opted to focus on her freestyle events, a move which paid off as she came away from the competition with six medals (three of them gold). Now, we’ll get a chance to see what she can do with the backstrokes added to her schedule. Armed with her record, Worlds gold, and consistently fast times, she’ll be the one to beat in Birmingham. The top five women in the Commonwealth have all been under the championship record this season, so we’ll be on record watch here through the three rounds. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, four women collected all of the individual backstroke medals: Kylie Masse, Emily Seebohm, Taylor Ruck, and Georgia Davies. Only Masse returns to compete in Birmingham this summer.

The Commonwealth Games begin in Birmingham this week. Here's the refresher you need before the action starts on Friday.
Coverage will begin every night at 7pm AEST and run through the wee hours of the morning. Swimmers picked up six gold medals in relays at the last Games. There are two days of competition where the swimming and athletics programs overlap. The Games will be held in and around Birmingham at 15 different venues. Medal races begin at 4am and go until 7am (AEST). We’re set for six days of swimming action. Keep in mind, however, there’s a nine-hour time difference between Birmingham and the east coast of Australia. The opening ceremony begins on Friday morning at 4.45am AEST, with competition beginning later on Friday for Australian viewers. Sport lovers might have to sacrifice some sleep in the coming days. The first runs from 7pm to 10:30pm (AEST) and then again at 3:30am to 7am (AEST). The XXII Commonwealth Games will run across 11 days of competition from July 29 to August 8. The young and the old? The average age of the Australian team is 26.6 years old and 65 per cent of athletes will be competing at their first Commonwealth Games. On day one for example (this Friday), lawn bowls is the first sport to get underway, at 5.30pm (AEST). Swimming heats will then begin in prime time for Australian viewers on the east coast.
More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories are set to compete in 19 sports and 280 medal events over a packed 11 days. Women's T20 cricket ...
19:00-21:30 - The evening athletics session is the last of the Games and culminates in the women's and men's 4x400m relays. This could be Howell and Powell day for England, as European champion Gemma Howell competes in the women's -63kg class and Walsall's Daniel Powell takes part in the men's -73kg. England will look to Tokyo champion Reece Dunn in the S14 200m freestyle, world champion Ben Proud in the men's 50m free, and the men's medley relay. For Wales, Lily Rice has a shot at gold in the women's S8 100m backstroke and Medi Harris will look to upset world record-holder Kaylee McKeown of Australia and Canada's Kylie Masse in the women's 100m backstroke. 18:00-22:00 - Rugby sevens concludes in Coventry with the men's and women's finals. 15:00-19:00 - The women's points race and men's scratch offer a solid chance for pandemonium at the Lee Valley Velopark in London. Both races reward riders for getting out ahead of the field and both build to a dramatic climax. In the men's race, sprint swimmer turned four-time paratriathlon world champion Dave Ellis is a favourite for England. The hosts are also strongly favoured in the mixed relay as they are able to name the bulk of the GB team that won Olympic mixed relay gold last year. 09:00-12:00 and 14:30-17:30 - There are wide-open fields in the men's (09:00)and women's (14:30) individual all-around gymnastics finals, where the gymnasts must perform on all sets of apparatus and the best combined score wins. 11:00-16:00 - The men's and women's sprint triathlon titles are decided in Sutton Coldfield's Sutton Park, north of Birmingham. The sprint event means the swim, bike and run are all half the Olympic distance. Weightlifting hands out its first four gold medals of the Games. Only the Australians have won more Commonwealth weightlifting medals than India, and Saturday could be a big day for Indian hopes as Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu competes in the women's 49kg class. His 18th and record-equalling medal could come in the men's 50m butterfly, which he won in 2018, although he pulled out of the world championships with bronchitis last month so there is a question mark over how he recovers from that. Australia picking up three or four of Friday's seven swimming gold medals, or more, isn't out of the question, depending on the outcome of a three-way battle with Canada and England in the mixed 4x100m relay.
The opening day of the Commonwealth Games will see sports like cricket and hockey taking centre stage.
India's best showing at the event had come in 2010 as they returned with 101 medals, including 38 gold. The opening ceremony for the event will take place during the early hours of Friday, as per Indian Standard Time. The opening ceremony will begin at 4 AM IST. Then the first day of the mega event will see sports like hockey, women's cricket, and badminton taking centre stage. The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games will begin at Birmingham, United Kingdom on July 28 and the mega event will conclude on August 8.

She has the ability to lift her team with her defence, and as captain, she will be trying to do just that for this Trinidad & Tobago team. Msomi is involved in everything for her team, and if they are to perform well in this tournament, you can be sure Msomi will play a huge part in that. Pair that with her fearlessness to put up a shot anywhere in the circle and she has a very bright future in the game.” Fresh from a terrific season for Superleague champions Manchester Thunder, her confidence should be sky high right now, and she will be looking to bring that winning form to the Commonwealth Games. A tremendous athlete, she is also a successful Gaelic Footballer. That’s when she’s not being a doctor. Her versatility allows her to be able to play all three midcourt positions, but she’ll likely be in the centre position mostly in Birmingham, and her combination with captain Bongi Msomi will be crucial to South Africa’s eventual results. The number one goal keeper in the competition this year with a whopping 52 intercepts, you can expect her to carry on that exceptional form at the Games.” We saw her do it time and time again with the Thunderbirds and she likes to rise to big occasions. Her strong-bodied play will be difficult to defend no matter if she’s in GA or GS and the unpredictable nature of her game will keep defenders guessing. Liz Watson will have a point to prove in Birmingham. Some have criticised her form towards the end of the Super Netball season, but at her best, she is the number one feeder in world netball, and with the responsibility of leading this quality team, she is sure to play a leading role in whatever success the team has. Her play at wing attack will be crucial to the success of the team. Towards the end of the Super Netball season, she showed signs that she is ready to hit peak form in Birmingham. It must be remembered that if not for Geva Mentor, England wouldn’t be defending champions. Nonetheless, their growth is not something to be ignored, nor is the fact they will be bolstered by a home crowd and an entire nation backing them all the way.”

Her roles in Birmingham will include assistant starter for the track cycling, she will be one of the commissaire for the road time trial and will be a chief judge for the road races. It caps off four years of toil to get herself to the point that on Monday morning she jetted off to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games.

A young Helen Housby could only look to David Beckham for inspiration. An admirable role model, but she is glad young girls have more options now.
She says it remains the best day of her life. "We've had to mature as a team and as individuals to back up our performances and take on the pressure, front up and want to lead from the start and dominate opposition. Of the prospects of winning a second, on home soil, she says: "I don't even want to talk about it. It will not be the first major event celebrating sportswomen this summer. "Sometimes in the past England have relied on being the underdogs and being scrappy, giving it everything," she says. "I've seen that photo a lot," the shooter says of the picture of her, tongue blue from an energy drink, at the bottom of a pile-on with her England team-mates.
Kaylee McKeown and Summer McIntosh look to be the top two swimmers fighting it out for IM titles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
She’s seeded fourth out of all the Commonwealth swimmers in this event and has a best time of 4:37.26 from last year, so she could potentially reach the podium too. Being the top Commonwealth swimmer aside from McKeown and McIntosh, look to see her be in the mix at the top as she gains more experience at big meets. She’s strong in middle-distance freestyle events, having just recently medaled in the 800 free at World Championships, but Birmingham will be her first time taking IM to the test internationally since the World University Games in 2017. In a race scenario, it is likely that we will see McIntosh come from behind on freestyle if she were to win the race. The 17-year-old Ramsay came into 2022 with a PB of 2:13.76, and then shaved nearly a second off of it to qualify for her first World Championship and Commonwealth team. McIntosh shocked the swimming world back in March when she swam that 4:29.12 time to break the Commonwealth record. Harvey recently spoke out about possibly being drugged on the last night of the World Championships, which resulted in a rib sprain and a small concussion that affected her ability to perform upper-body workouts. Her chances of gold in the 200 IM are largely dependent on whether she can be back on form come time for Commonwealths after dealing with a bout of glandular fever (mono) over the last year. Then there’s the Canadian duo of Sydney Pickrem and Mary-Sophie Harvey. Pickrem, the 2019 Worlds bronze medalist in the 200 IM, pulled out of the Commonwealth Games due to personal reasons. When McKeown is taken out of the equation, McIntosh is our pick to win the event in her absence. However, given that she scratched the 100 back at the World Championships to focus on the 200 IM final, we could very well see something similar be done at the Commonwealth Games. She’s the Worlds silver medalist, and her season-best time of 2:08.57 is over 1.5 seconds clear of the rest of her Commonwealth competition.

It's been absolutely wonderful," he added. Manager of the Cook Islands' bowls team, Papatua Papatua, thanked the club for its "warmth and support" and that "to win any medals will be a bonus for us". While one big David has been ruled out through injury, another will seek a repeat gold when David Liti gets to toss tin with the big boys, while lawn bowls will expect a better return than one medal (gold) in 2018. More than a third of those medals came on two wheels, spread among the track, road and mountain bike disciplines. Hamish Kerr leapt into the spotlight in the men’s high jump final in Tokyo and showed that wasn’t a flash in the pan with a bronze medal at this year’s world indoor champs, while Maddi Wesche and Olivia McTaggart are set to emerge from the shadows of Dame Valerie Adams and Eliza McCartney. Wesche delivered a personal best in the women’s shot put at the world champs to finish seventh and should battle Canada’s Sarah Mitton for gold in Birmingham. Coll is the current men's world No.2 and will be favoured to go one better than his silver from the Gold Coast while King, ranked No.5, won three medals in 2018, including singles gold and mixed doubles bronze with Coll. Campbell Stewart and Aaron Gate will head the men’s track endurance charge for medals while Bryony Botha looms as a big chance in the women’s individual pursuit after breaking the national record four times over the summer. To surpass the collection of 15 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals from 2018 – one better than the 45 medals claimed at Glasgow 2014 – might be asking a little too much.

McIntosh is just the fourth woman in history to record a time of under four minutes in the event. Before getting COVID, the Olympic 200m and 400m freestyle champion had already planned to skip last month’s world championships in Budapest to focus on the Commonwealth Games starting in Birmingham on July 28. After setting a new 400m freestyle world record at the trials, Titmus was hit by COVID in early June. Titmus believes she has improved since setting a world record in the 400m freestyle at Australia’s selection trials in May. The only swimmer in the world to have swum a better time this year is McIntosh. The Canadian clocked a 4:29.12 in March, and their face-off in Birmingham would have been one of the moments of the meet. A win in that event would have given McKeown every chance of achieving the “Iron Cross” - a feat of winning the 100m and 200m backstroke, as well as the 200m and 400m individual medley, considered the hardest combination in swimming.

Kelsey-Lee Barber (javelin), Nina Kennedy (pole vault), Eleanor Patterson (high jump) and Nicola Olyslagers (high jump) are all huge medal chances. The 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast saw Australia reel in 80 gold medals, 61 silver medals and 60 bronze medals for a table-topping 201 medals.
