In the North Island, heavy rain warnings are in place for Northland, Auckland from Whangaparāoa northwards, the Coromandel Peninsula, the western Bay of Plenty and Mount Taranaki until Tuesday, with up to 120-160mm of rain expected in places. Canterbury south of the Rakaia river, North Otago and Dunedin should expect rainfall of up to 130mm in places, with warnings in place from the early hours of Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning. Other rain watches are in place around the country for Marlborough, Gisborne from Ruatoria northwards and the Eastern Bay of Plenty between Monday afternoon and midday Tuesday. MetService had issued a number of weather watches and warnings across the North and South Island. Thousands of Northlanders are without power and schools and roads are shut as strong rain and wind lashes the North Island. The low pressure system is currently sitting to the northwest and is expected to continue moving down the country throughout the week, bringing with it more wet and windy weather. - In Northland and the Far North, two schools and eight roads are closed, while thousands are without electricity.

MetService said rain and wind is set to ease in Northland this evening. There are also wind and rain warnings in place for Northland, Coromandel, Waikato and Bay of Plenty on Monday. A blast of wild weather is hitting Auckland, with heavy wind and rain warnings in place across the city.

"The rain will likely fall as snow above about 900 metres over the South Island, which may affect some alpine passes," MetService says. High winds also caused issues in Auckland's CBD, with the Park Hyatt Hotel having to board up windows. There are over 20 weather watches and warnings in place across the country and the worst of the weather is expected to hit the North Island from 10am to 2am tomorrow. A new "rainmaker" is striking New Zealand, with heavy rain and strong gale-force wind warnings for Auckland and many parts of the North Island today.

Two thousand properties around Waitangi and Paihia have lost power this morning, and another fault has kept children home from school.

The Kaeo River in the Far North, which is prone to flooding, has spilled onto State Highway 10 after heavy rainfall. There are over 20 weather watches and warnings in place across the country and the worst of the weather is expected to hit the North Island from 10am to 2am tomorrow. In Auckland, the wild weather led to a series of road accidents during the morning commute, including a car rolling on the Southern Motorway. Speed limits were reduced on the Harbour Bridge as a precaution.

The Kaeo River in the Far North, which is prone to flooding, has spilled onto State Highway 10 after heavy rainfall. There are over 20 weather watches and warnings in place across the country and the worst of the weather is expected to hit the North Island from 10am to 2am tomorrow. In the South Island, MetService have issued a number of road snowfall warnings including for Lewis Pass from 2pm to 9pm, Arthur’s Pass 3pm to 2am tomorrow, Porter’s Pass from 4pm to 1am, Lindis Pass from 8pm to 11pm tomorrow and the Crown Range Rd from 1am to 4pm tomorrow.
