Commonwealth Games 2022: day one action in Birmingham – live! (The Guardian)

With lawn bowls, badminton and triathlon all to come on day one, join Will Magee to follow the action in Birmingham.

How will the medal table look by the end of the day? Whatever happens, let’s hope that, in the words of Nadine Dorries, the Games “puts Birmingham on the map”. It was famously impossible to locate the United Kingdom’s second-largest city before today. She will be up against Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, who pipped her to a gold medal in Tokyo. His main rival is New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde, with both expected to end up on the podium. The lawn bowls and para lawn bowls are well under way. It has featured at every Games bar 1966, when it was dropped owing to the lack of available bowling greens in Kingston, Jamaica. Missed the opening ceremony last night? She’s spoken about her excitement at taking part in the Games and experiencing “a noisy home crowd”. England are up next, with Laura Kenny leading the charge. England are now 28-0 up and, to be honest, a Sri Lanka comeback seems quite unlikely. It’s nice of Boatman to give someone else a turn. They post the slowest time so far at 4:24.701.

It was an extremely impressive effort to make the final given they had lost Ally Wollaston to injury before the event. "It makes a big difference, 4k is a really long way with only three riders. We knew we needed to go faster and every single one of these guys, we committed 100 per cent – it all came together perfectly." The trio set a Games record of 47.841 seconds to qualify first for the final then went better in the gold medal decider, with a time of 47.425 earning New Zealand their second gold of the Games. Their gold medal followed the Kiwi women's team pursuit starting a morning of medals with silver, being outnumbered and outpowered in the final for gold by Australia. The Kiwi men's team pursuit won New Zealand's first gold at the Games, beating England by two seconds in the final of the 4000m event, and they were followed by the women's team sprint in standing on the top step of the podium.

Comm Games live: Clareburt stuns with gold, Black Ferns lose semi (New Zealand Herald)

All the action from day two at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Andrews, who qualified as the sixth seed, lost the first of three races but stormed back to win the final two, including a decisive victory in the decider. Botha set a Games record in qualifying, with her time of 3:19:836 blasting her way into the gold final, with a healthy advantage over Australian Maeve Plouffe, who will take on Botha in the final but recorded a time 2.159 seconds slower than the Kiwi. Aaron Gate and Tom Sexton will face off in the gold medal final of the men's 4000m individual pursuit, with Sexton having set a Commonwealth Games record, only for Gate to beat it 20 minutes later to qualify top, 1.56 seconds ahead of Sexton who claimed second in what will be an all-Kiwi final. Less than 24 hours after winning silver as a member of the women's team pursuit, Botha is now favourite to win gold in the 3000m individual pursuit. With England needing a win to advance to the semis, the hosts were no match for the defending champions, with the Kiwis running out to a 21-7 lead at half-time and adding three more tries in the second half to qualify top from their pool and set up a semifinal showdown with Australia. Clareburt led all the way to cruise to victory in his heat, with his time of 4:17:72 the fastest in his heat by nearly two seconds, and seeing him qualify top for the final, 0.6 seconds ahead of Australian Brendon Smith.

A huge improvement in the breaststroke leg led to a breakthrough win for the Wellingtonian at the Commonwealth Games.

A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. If quality local sport journalism is important to you, become a Stuff supporter today. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. The New Zealand swim team in Birmingham opened their medal account on day one with a gold to Dame Sophie Pascoe in the women’s S9 100m freestyle and silver to fellow para swimmer Jesse Reynolds in the men’s S9 100m backstroke. The Wellingtonian has been regarded as a potential gold medallist since his bronze in the same event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. He was third at the 2019 world champs in South Korea, becoming the fifth New Zealander to win a medal at the world championships and first male to do so since Danyon Loader in 1994. He was disappointed with his seventh-place finish in the final at the Tokyo Olympics last year, when he was the second-fastest qualifier for the final but struggled to sleep prior to the final, with heats held at night and finals the next morning.
