Alex Yee grabbed England's first gold medal of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's triathlon at Sutton Park.
Over the course of his short career, Yee has established himself as arguably the best runner in the sport and bit by bit he dramatically pulled back the leaders. As Yee emerged from his swim 15 seconds from the lead, embedded within the main pack, he was charged with the task of chasing down the leaders in the 20km cycle. He finished the swim in third place, the leading pack of three with Jamie Riddle of South Africa and New Zealand’s Tayler Reid immediately distancing themselves.
Results from the elite women's triathlon at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Flora Duffy reigned supreme.
The final run lap was a victory stroll for Duffy as she continued to look effortless in the pursuit of gold. That gap of a couple of seconds from T2 grew swiftly as Duffy continued to step on the gas while Taylor-Brown really struggled to go with her. Flora had the better transition to pinch a couple of seconds heading out onto the run. They had a significant advantage of around 27 seconds at the end of Lap 1 of 4 on the bike leg. Flora’s move had proved decisive and now it was the big two at the head of affairs with Potter’s golden hopes apparently fading. She was swiftly joined by Duffy, Coldwell, Taylor-Brown and Legault in a lead group of five.
It was yet another almighty showdown between England's Alex Yee and New Zealand's Hayden Wilde that brought the Sutton Park crowd to its feet in Birmingham.
We got 16 seconds on the bike and that was super exciting, and the plan was to have Alex burn his matches catching up and then go for it the last kilometre. The second climb proved decisive, and by the top Yee was breathing down his rival’s neck, sitting on his shoulder then passing as the blue carpet neared. I was like a dog with a bone up there on the bike, I’ve never not had someone to chase, I just had to keep the watts up and go for it, put everything on the line.” Twenty seconds back the chasers were now on foot too, the first climb into the park seeing Reid drop off the front as Wilde and Riddle pushed on. “The swim was solid but then I see Hayden up the road and just wanted to stay calm. I’ve run on this course hundreds of times so the loop felt familiar, and I’m just proud to pull it together for England. This race is honest and hard and I didn’t want to blow up my legs on the bike.
Kiwi Hayden Wilde has been praised for an act of sportsmanship during the dying stages of his triathlon event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
I don't know too much about it." I do not want to take that medal away from him – he absolutely deserves it," Wilde said. But it sounds like we can try to do something.
Bermuda's Flora Duffy becomes first triathlete to retain Commonwealth title; England's Georgia Taylor-Brown takes silver and Scotland's Beth Potter bronze.
I knew I was probably going to suffer on the run because of that, but I didn’t think I’d suffer as much as I did! By T2, the gap was double again, Duffy and Taylor-Brown heading onto to the two-lap 5km run with a minute in hand. “It’s so nice to race with her, we’re always looking out for each other on the race course. With a massive smile of relief, Duffy crossed the line in 55:25, proudly brandishing the Bermudan flag. By the end of lap two the gap was 16 seconds and growing. But conscious of run legs, she soon held back to work as a five with Duffy, Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Canada’s Emy Legault.

New Zealand triathlete Hayden Wilde has lodged a protest after a 10-second time penalty cost him the chance of gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
I actually felt extremely good on the second lap and knew Alex was coming. "I came in like I always do holding my bike, I was holding my clip and I unclipped and as soon as my wheel was inside the belt, then I unclipped to use it as balance," he said. "I don't think it was a penalty...
