Bryony Botha said she was looking to run a half marathon before it was cancelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, but all the running was making her coach nervous.
After her performance on Sunday morning though, perhaps that mindset - like the Commonwealth Games record - could be broken. In fact, Botha broke the Commonwealth Games record - which she had set earlier that day - with a 3:18.456 effort that added to an already impressive year for her in which she also broke the national record three times. Grinning from ear to ear with a smile she that hadn't faded since she crossed the finish line in record time, Bryony Botha looked like she still had more energy to give after winning gold in the women's individual pursuit on Sunday morning.
Botha broke the Commonwealth Games in qualifying and came back to old the golden cherry on top in the final.
Despite Gate's best efforts to reduce the deficit, it remained the same by the halfway mark but Gate was starting to go up another gear, cutting Sexton's lead over the next 500m before taking the lead with the final quarter of the race to go. Sexton jumped out to a daunting early lead in the opening 500m of 1.3s and continued to grow it to the 1000m mark in the 4000m race. Botha opened up a commanding 0.7s lead in the first 500m of the 3000m race and continued to grow it relentlessly throughout, pushing the advantage to 2.913s at the halfway mark.

Bryony Botha became the fourth New Zealander to win a gold medal in the women's individual pursuit after an utterly dominant performance in the final.
A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. Coming into this race today I just wanted to get a PB. A one-and-a-half second PB is pretty big so I'm stoked with that.โ Botha was stunned by her gold medal-winning ride, dipping under 3:19 for the first time. Botha has come on leaps and bounds in 2022. โI wasn't too sure how my legs would feel.
