“No, I knew I needed to put it to bed. A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. If quality local sport journalism is important to you, become a Stuff supporter today. I knew I needed to throw 22m plus to put it out of reach. And I just want to have more of those lucky days. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. “Training the last wee while has been really good. But men's shot put right now is so good, and it's so hard to win, and when you win it's your lucky day. I got hold of the last one a little bit, which was good, really good. “I thought it was really close, maybe like a 20 per cent chance. I was knocking on the door with the other four or five throws.” The former, the only competitor in the field to have a throw above 22m to his name, could have taken a seat and remained there after his first effort – a 21.98m bomb.

Walsh defends shot put gold after epic final with Gill (1 News)

Tom Walsh held on to his crown in Birmingham despite a career-best effort from Jacko Gill.

Gill's silver is his first Commonwealth Games medal in his second appearance after he was forced to miss the Gold Coast Games due to a myocarditis [heart inflammation] diagnosis. Walsh added he knew his first throw - the 21.98m effort - was enough to put him out of reach of most of the field but he knew Gill had something special in the wings. Gill was quick to make it a Kiwi one-two in the final with his first throw of 20.48m making the New Zealand duo the only ones to pass the 20m mark in the first round. However, he told 1News his latest medal had a special footnote to it after his rough performance just over a month ago at the World Athletics Championships in the US where he finished fourth. Walsh stayed in the 21m range with his next two throws but was unable to improve on his initial mark while Gill reduce the deficit slightly with his next effort - a 20.88m throw. In front of a packed out Alexander Stadium against the backdrop of a picturesque setting sun, Walsh sent a firm message to the rest of the field with his opening throw in the final with a 21.98m effort - a throw that was bigger than the personal best of every other finalist.

New Zealand Bank Historic Shot One-two In Birmingham | Scoop ... (Scoop.co.nz)

The rock stars of the shot put circle served up a heavy metal performance to remember as Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill secured the first one two for New Zealand ...

It is great for Jacko (to set a PB and win silver), great for shot put and athletics in New Zealand. Every year he is getting closer and it is going to be an interesting domestic season again next year. I lost 25-30kg after my heart issues and I missed the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, so to come back here and set a PB means a lot. To come back from the heart issues has been huge, a really big battle. My parents have been a huge support and getting help from Dale (Stevenson, a coaching mentor) has been awesome. To get hold of that last throw was cool, but the other throws were knocking at the door, so I’m really happy with the way I competed. I appreciate that a lot more as a I get older and wiser.” I have gratitude that I am here, physically and mentally in really good nick. Tom followed with his shortest effort of the comp – registering 21.05m. Nigerian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi advanced to outright third with a 20.33m effort while Jacko showed no further improvement with a 20.41m toss. But the competition was not quite finished. The competition then exploded into life in an epic final round. With the Kiwi throwing titans ranked one and two there was an expectation thrust upon the pair and both spectacularly coped with any pressure they may have been feeling.

Shot put one-two: Walsh wins gold, Gill takes silver (Otago Daily Times)

Today was a very good day. And not just for Walsh. The defending champion has claimed his second straight shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, ...

The 27-year-old has never reached those same heights at senior level. Gill's first effort made that prospect look likely. At the halfway mark of the competition, he was 55cm ahead of Nigerian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who claimed silver on the Gold Coast. And after Gill's fourth effort of 21.20m, that advantage had been extended to 87cm. It also provided a golden consolation prize after he surprisingly failed to reach the podium at last month's world championships, after which Walsh said he had "a rocket up the arse" to again prove his abilities. The Kiwi pair produced 12 of the top 13 throws of the competition, the best of those seeing Walsh win the 17th gold by a Kiwi in Birmingham, equalling the nation's record set at Auckland 1990. The 30-year-old was joined on the podium by compatriot Jacko Gill, who won his first medal at a major championships by seizing silver with a personal best of 21.90m.

The defending champion claimed his second straight shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, essentially sealing victory with his first throw before ...

That's what I was trying to do - and didn't do at worlds." But there is one special celebration marked in his calendar: a trip north for a game of golf with fellow gold medallist Hamish Kerr. "I felt relaxed out there and that's when I throw well. "In Oregon, I was probably happy with one or two throws," Walsh said. And if I didn't, I wouldn't have won." That owed much to Gill's breakout performance.
