Australia outclass England to reach Commonwealth Games netball ... (The Guardian)

Defending champions England lost their Commonwealth Games semi-final against Australia, who were inspired by star shooter Gretel Bueta.

With Australia renowned for their ability to retain possession and England finding no tangible answer to Bueta, who shot 43 from 44, Thirlby’s side were unable to locate the turnover ball they needed to mount a comeback. I think she got too much hand on ball and her getting herself back into the circle exposed us. She’s brilliant and versatile coming out of the circle. Thirlby rolled the dice and made changes, but the nightmare only continued for England. The onslaught of defending pressure applied by the Diamonds turned the Roses’ attack end into treacle. They seized the game from start and never relinquished their grip, leaving England to now tackle New Zealand for bronze on Sunday. The disruption favoured Australia who found another gear, picking off an England ball and delivering it to the star shooter Gretel Bueta with relative ease.

Commonwealth Games: England title defence ended by Australian ... (Sky Sports)

England's Commonwealth Games title defence has been ended by the Australian Diamonds in the semi-final after a 60-51 defeat at the NEC Arena.

The Diamonds gained the first turnover of the quarter though. Australia will go for gold against Jamaica. The unit had just over six minutes to make an impact. They opened the gap out to 10 goals in the third set of 15 minutes before withstanding England's gutsy fourth-quarter comeback. While the post was replaced, both teams had a chance to reflect on the early moments. However, the Diamonds avenged that result in style.

ANALYSIS: Coach Dame Noeline Taurua said there was 'a gulf in individuals' as New Zealand were relegated to the bronze medal match.

Those two things actually equated to four goals and all of a sudden we're on the back foot.” The loss in Birmingham was NZ’s biggest since that shellacking, which combined with the subsequent defeat by Jamaica soon meant the end of Janine Southby’s time in charge and heralded the start of a remarkable turnaround under Taurua which culminated in the World Cup win only a year later. A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. If quality local sport journalism is important to you, become a Stuff supporter today. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. Even allowing for lowered expectations of the current side, this was one of New Zealand netball's most humbling losses.

Oz netball clash with England had to be stopped after a player broke the goalpost.

The win came on the back of a perfect start by the Diamonds where they led 15-12 at quarter-time and began to take some of the heat out of the crowd. Jo Harten went out to challenge Weston and she doesn't like what she is watching and no side is stepping down here. It's on for young and old here. Unbelievable stuff." Commentator Sue Gaudion also said: "Extraordinary footage. The Diamonds were made to put their elbows out in a bruising, spiteful clash at the National Convention and Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

England suffered an agonising 55-48 loss to New Zealand in the bronze medal match and leave a home Commonwealth Games empty-handed.

A key turnover from Mentor with 10 minutes left got the crowd on their feet and produced a two-goal run. Within the final minute Usoro-Brown arrived at goal keeper for her last seconds of elite-level netball. Housby did not return for the final quarter, instead Jo Harten arrived at goal shooter with Cardwell moving out to goal attack. After 30 minutes, England had a 29-23 deficit to claw back and Thirlby made further changes. Guscoth returned at goal defence and Francis-Bayman shifted out a position. Neither side could break each other in the opening stages of the second quarter.

Defeat to New Zealand costs England Commonwealth netball bronze (The Guardian)

England's netball team will leave Birmingham empty handed after a 55-48 defeat against New Zealand in a bruising Commonwealth Games bronze-medal match.

“I believe 100% we are capable of taking the teams in the top four. If the shortcoming in England’s defeat against Australia was an inability to turn over ball, then it clearly had not been addressed in their hunt for bronze. The second quarter was the only quarter of a margin that most probably killed us. But it did little to change the scoreline; New Zealand entered the break five goals up. New Zealand’s grip on the centre court tightened in the second quarter. New Zealand’s 6ft 3in Kelly Jury wrapped herself around the Roses shooter Eleanor Cardwell while Geva Mentor tried to blunt Nweke. The deadlock was broken by the Ferns, reaping the reward for their zonal pressure to edge 14-13 ahead.

Usoro-Brown, whose daughter Savannah was in the passionate crowd, said: “To be part of the era that has transformed netball in the UK, part of a golden era in 2018 but even those before us who laid the foundations. “I’m really hopeful for the future, I think we’re on the cusp of something great. We missed other storytelling features that are embedded in Sky’s ANZ Premiership coverage, such as the split-screen 'Coach Cam' focused on each coach, and box inserts that allow viewers to simultaneously watch live action and replays or close-ups and audio of coaches. Our analysis showed no use of technology that added nuance and complexity to the game narrative, such as court-level Steadicam or fixed remote cameras with clear audio at each team bench. In the wake of the weekend’s matches to decide the gold medal play-off, fans on social media vented their frustration at missing key moments in the game. The netball at these Games has appeared slow and boring, with most of the game presented from a centre wide shot looking down on the players, which misrepresents the actual speed and intensity. This level of quality is provided by “a core crew of people who are passionate about netball and about broadcasting netball.
