Today's match will be about the performances on the field, but there is much work to be done off it if Barcelona are to take full advantage of their summer overhaul. It figures to be a busy day for the Pumas shot-stopper between the sticks. 4th min: GOAL, BARCELONA! It's a fast start for the hosts as Robert Lewandowski gets Barcelona on the board first with a spectacular opener. 55 mins to kick: The Barcelona lineup is in. There is just a week left to go before their campaign begins, and the club's wage bill is unsustainable as-is, La Liga has determined. 24th min: Chance, Barcelona! Every Barcelona attack seems to produce a great opportunity on goal, and this time only fate keeps the ball from finding the back of the net. It was total and complete domination from Barcelona in the first half, dominating possession and carving the Pumas defense to shreds. Even when Barcelona took their foot off the gas and sat back, Pumas had to fight hard just to string a few passes together. 49th min: GOAL, BARCELONA! After a furious start to the first half, the hosts have begun the same in the second with reinforcements on the pitch. It rolled to Memphis on the end line, but the Pumas goalkeeper is there to stop the chance. 46th min: The second half is under way, with a host of changes for the home side. The ugliest goal yet in a litany of defensive nightmares from the visitors at the Camp Nou.

Join AS USA for live Gamper Trophy action as Barcelona take on Pumas at Camp Nou on 7 August.

It's a good effort but the German gets down well to push it out for a corner. Barcelona face Pumas in the traditional Trofeo Joan Gamper today but Umtiti will not be involved. Alves sends in the corner from the left. I’m confident and I’m going to show all I can do on the pitch. Pumas have nothing to lose and go back up the other end and win a second corner in as many minutes. As we approach half-time, it remains 4-0 to the home side. De Jong's corner is eventually cleared and Barca start again from the halfway line. Aubameyang fires it across goal and it goes out for a goalkick. Aubameyang crosses from the right. Piqué gets up highest but his header goes wide of the Pumas goal. Will he be a Barcelona player this season? A good problem for Xavi to have.

Ornstein: Barcelona threaten legal action over Frenkie de Jong ... (The Athletic)

Barcelona have told the Manchester United and Chelsea target that they want him to revert a previous contract.

Bazunu started for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in their 4-1 defeat against Spurs on Saturday, with McCarthy left on the bench. He has joined City as a youth scout for the northern area. The other reason for players applying water to their boots — and some do it regularly — is to feel mentally engaged. That could be perceived to reinforce comments by Evgeniy Levchenko — chairman of the Dutch players’ union — that De Jong might be a victim of extortion, a notion current Barcelona president Joan Laporta denies. A sports psychologist says: “Lots of players do it. They like the close-touch feel between foot and boot, believing it enhances performance. Barber represented Brighton throughout the process, with owner-chairman Tony Bloom on a family holiday in Australia. Cucurella wasn’t the only transfer deal rooted in Boehly’s dinner invite last month. Though there’s no logical “performance” advantage to wetting a boot, it does help if there’s some pain or discomfort, sometimes caused by over-heating. Other players were seen doing similar at different games in England. New boots also mould better when damp, and there were a wide variety of fresh styles on show this weekend, with green and yellow a popular theme for the new season. The letter sent to De Jong last month is thought to inform the Dutchman that Barcelona think they are in a position to initiate criminal proceedings to establish what happened in relation to the signing of his contract and ascertain where responsibility resides for the supposed wrongdoing.

Would it be a stretch to see De Jong at City at the end of all of this? An encyclopedia of football shirts and boots knowledge – both past and present – Mark has also been to the FA Cup and League Cup finals for FFT and has written pieces for the mag ranging on subjects from Bobby Robson's season at Barcelona to Robinho's career. Should the situation between De Jong and Barcelona be resolved swiftly, however, perhaps Man City could still have another part to play. The Blues seem to have done most of their summer business in this way, pouncing in the chance to sign the likes of Marc Cucurella from under Manchester City's noses, looking at Raphinha or Dembele depending on who Barça signed (they weren't expecting both) and even enquiring about the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Jesus to test the waters. Now, they want to cancel his existing contract and return to the deal he was on previously. Question marks were raised when the Blaugrana legend appeared to favour stronger, more powerful midfielders early his tenure and when De Jong was substituted against Rayo Vallecano in April, he reacted by storming down the tunnel rather than taking his place on the bench.

Barcelona are still very much clown shoes (Deadspin)

Latest bid to declare Frenkie De Jong's contract 'illegal' is the height of ridiculousness.

And yet you can’t escape the feeling that they’ll get away with it, because La Liga isn’t actually going to let them go out of business and take most of the league with it. A lot of that latter effort has concerned getting De Jong completely off the books, which they haven’t been able to do and De Jong doesn’t want. However, that might not be enough for La Liga to sanction the registering of their new signings, and they also need to get their wage bill down. As we wrote before, De Jong deferred his salary during the pandemic to the last two years left on his contract at the time, and two more years that were tacked onto the end of it to spread those payments out. If you had been asleep the past year and a half to two years (and we’re all jealous if you were), this past summer probably looked pretty normal in the soccer world. But Barca doesn’t. And what they’re doing to try and register them is bordering on the absurd or something out of a satirical film.

In total, including a new sponsorship deal with Spotify, the departure of players and increased revenue, Barcelona said that they had brought in more than €850m as they seek to improve their squad and fix a financial crisis.
