They preserved their six-goal lead at the end of the third quarter at 41-35, and four goals in quick succession at the start of the fourth from Grace Nweke ended any hopes of an England comeback. Australia hold a decisive lead on host nation England on the medal table after claiming the nation's 1000th Games gold on day 10 in Birmingham.

Her compatriot Mackenzie Little raised the bar with a personal best in the final of 64.27m. But Barber, who was cleared to compete late in the week, loves a challenge. As Australia’s cricket innings began, Chris McHugh and Paul Burnett also clinched a gold medal for the nation in beach volleyball. Earlier on Sunday, the Hockeyroos also fared second best in their final against England when beaten 2-1. Another rush of gold in Birmingham saw Australia reach a major milestone as the Diamonds netball team claimed the nation’s 1,000th Commonwealth Games gold medal. Steph Wood said there were flashbacks to the traumatic loss in the final against England on the Gold Coast but this time around they found a way to maintain their focus. Chef de Mission Petria Thomas said it was an honour to have led the team towards such a momentous occasion.

Australia outshine Jamaica to win gold in netball final (1 News)

This was their fourth Commonwealth title to go with 11 World Cups, re-establishing them as one of global sport's dominant teams.

The Australians had begun impressively, suffocating the Jamaicans in defence to open up a six-goal lead and they were still up 14-12 at the end of the quarter. The lead increased to 10 before the Jamaicans pulled it back to six going into the final quarter - ominously for the Aussies, the same deficit they had in Thursday's match. Stacey Marinkovich's team managed to defuse the threat of the world's best player Jhaniele Fowler as they prevailed 55-51 at the National Exhibition Centre Arena in a thrilling final on Monday.

In the aftermath of England's fourth-place finish, emotions were running high and perhaps not enough was spoken about the form they showed. The decisions of both players will impact on England's plans and path forwards. That's not to say that Fadoju cannot do it, but rushing her and getting the transition wrong is something Thirlby will want to avoid at all costs.
