"It did come as a surprise to me and I'm just sad he didn't share. "The Parliamentary Service works alongside whips from all parties. "I'm saddened that that's his experience. "With the way the current Parliamentary Service is run, you can go weeks and months before getting a reply to urgent issues and when they do have an answer it is seldom in writing and often from behind the desk of the party whips who - in my opinion, and based on what I have seen in my time in Parliament - use the Parliamentary Service to bully and harass their MPs "to keep them in line"." Hamilton West MP Gaurav Sharma has published a column in the New Zealand Herald in which he accuses Parliamentary Service of working hand-in-hand with the offices of party whips and leaders - including the prime minister's office. He also said the Whip's Office then went on to gaslight and victimise the complainant with the intention of threatening them about their long-term career prospects.

Ex-Labour MP 'appalled' at Sharma 'mouthing off' about Parliament ... (New Zealand Herald)

An ex-Labour MP has attacked Gurav Sharma for ill-discipline, Sharma fought back.

Sharma posted screenshots of the messages and posted them in replies to his own Facebook page. I am appalled by you [SIC] ill discipline in mouthing off in the media (current PSA organiser and former Labour MP)," Fenton wrote. "A practice was developed during the last Parliament and has continued into this Parliament where MPs who have ongoing staff relationship issues have been delayed in their appointment of new staff until the whips and Parliamentary Service are convinced they have sufficient skills to properly supervise them." "MPs are elected representatives of New Zealand's citizens as that would impinge on New Zealand's democracy, and the free right of MPs as elected representatives of New Zealand's citizens." Sharma posted his reply, in which he accused Fenton of being "the reason bullying is still a problem", and said she was victimising him. Labour backbencher Gaurav Sharma has been blasted as ill-disciplined by a former Labour MP, who says she was "appalled" at his "mouthing off in the media".

He also criticised the “meddling of political parties in a triangular relationship”, with the Service acting as the “fourth wheel”.

Labour responds to Hamilton West MP Gaurav Sharma's allegations ... (RNZ)

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Parliament, like any other workplace, must be free from bullying and that expectation applies to everyone, including MPs.

The Parliamentary Service and I met with Gaurav in good faith to progress these issues as recently as yesterday, he was fully represented at that meeting. "It recently paused hiring with the intention of providing further assistance before more staff were hired into his office. It's there for the welfare of everyone including the people we employ." "From my perspective is all I've seen is constructive attempts to try and resolve these issues. I've reached out to assure him that we will reach out with the support he feels he needs. Members of our team are in contact with him to make sure that he is okay. But ultimately at its heart this relates to an employment matter within his office where we've sought to find resolution which hasn't always been welcomed." "At all times the Whip's office has acted in good faith and sought to work constructively with Gaurav and the Parliamentary Service to ensure he has good support available to address issues between him and his staff. In a statement earlier, chief whip Duncan Webb said his office became aware of issues between Dr Sharma and his staff a year ago, and had been trying to work with him to address issues between him and his staff as recently as yesterday. She says she was aware at the end of last year there were some concerns and "all parties were working to resolve them" but the next time it was raised with her was "in the media yesterday". She says there are expectations in her team relating to the privacy of others, and clearly there are a number of concerns here at play. The Parliamentary Service did put a hiring pause on his office, she says, to "ensure that coaching and mentoring was constructive, and a way to resolve some of the issues in his office that had been raised".

I have felt really wrapped around and supported. "I was very surprised at that. "I'm sad that we were there, and we didn't understand that that's what his experience was, and I wish that he had reached out. Those approved processes were followed in this case, she said.

Labour MPs deny bullying culture after Gaurav Sharma claims (1 News)

The first-term Hamilton West MP claims Parliament has a rampant culture of bullying.

In his opinion piece, Sharma pointed to former MP Louisa Wall as an example. And, hopefully, Parliamentary Services wraps support around individuals who might be feeling that way." In a separate statement, the Labour whip's office said they had become aware of "issues between Gaurav and some of his staff a year ago". "I wish he had reached out. I haven't had a chance to talk to him. He said Parliament had recognised they had to do better "in terms of working relationships" with the likes of MPs' electorate offices and Parliamentary Services.

'Controlling': Staffer says working in Labour MP's office left them in ... (New Zealand Herald)

A former staffer to Labour MP Dr Gaurav Sharma has spoken out about an alleged culture of bullying that existed in his office, which they claim was so bad ...

"I'm just trying to give him the answer as quickly as possible," the staffer said. I had never known about mental health," the staffer said. The worker claimed Sharma would get on staffers' backs about the state of their desks, whether windows had been closed, and one staffer leaving a desk fan on. I didn't want to go back to work. They said they tried to quit almost immediately, but he talked them into staying. I would have rather killed myself than go back to work," they said. The staffer claimed Sharma was "angry" that he had to pick the key up himself. Sharma allegedly told the staffer there was "nothing else to say", but said that he and another member of staff had recovered from everything he had been put through by his staff. It's Gaurav's team or no one's team. After leaving, the staffer got in touch with Sharma to try to "clear the air" and move on. Ardern did not address the specific allegations. The staffer said they felt compelled to speak out after reading a column by Sharma in the Herald in which he alleged he himself had been the victim of bullying.

Gaurav Sharma, the political rookie who struck out at his own party (Stuff.co.nz)

When the rookie Labour MP Dr Gaurav Sharma first rose in the House, he spoke about standing up to bullies. He had been bullied at high school, he said.

Sharma was born in India, in the Himalayas, and came to New Zealand as a 12-year-old. From 2012 to 2015, he worked as a surgeon in various wards at Auckland City, Counties Manukau, and North Shore hospitals. They work for you, not the parties or people in power. Whatever your politics, we can all agree: New Zealand is better off when Kiwis are well-informed. He had been bullied at high school, he said. His father had arrived in the country years earlier, “with $250 in his pocket and a dream for a better life”, at times sleeping in the Auckland Domain as he sought to get himself established.

The Parliamentary Service and I met with Gaurav in good faith to progress these issues as recently as yesterday, he was fully represented at that meeting. Instead of treating the allegations seriously, Sharma claims he was told: "'The only way this country can succeed is if Labour is in government. At a meeting yesterday, Sharma claimed Labour laughed in his face. We are mindful these are ongoing relationships, so we must respect [the] individual's privacy, but we will continue to seek a resolution with Gaurav in the coming weeks." I remember one of my former patients sending me very kind message on World Mental Health Day about how I had helped her as a doctor a while ago. "I was open about this to the Parliamentary Services and the Labour Whips from the moment I hired the lawyer but they thought I was bluffing," he said. Ardern did not address the specific allegations. "I thought to myself about how despite listening to and assisting many of my constituents with bullying and harassment issues, I had to put a bold face up as I struggled everyday with the thought of contemplating suicide," he said. Instead of "listening" to his "concerns" about the staff member, Sharma claimed, people in the Labour Party tried to bring him "into disrepute" and rein him in. "I stand by my claims that I have been subjected to ongoing bullying by the Parliamentary Service and the Labour Whips and none of my concerns have been investigated," he said. "I had hundreds of pages to prove that my staff wasn't doing the work they were hired to do and it affected my ability to provide services to my constituents but I was never listened to," Sharma said. "While we dispute the allegations he has made, Gaurav is a valued member of the team, and we want to make sure he is getting the support he needs," she said.
