Aston Villa v Everton: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: It's Gerrard v Lampard as both teams look to record their first points of the season. Join Scott Murray.

8 min: Coady puts his foot on the ball and slows things down for Everton. He nearly sends McNeil away with a raking pass. Mykolenko had a bit of his shirt, but not much, and he was outside the box anyway. Villa come again, Cash bursting into the box from the right and falling over, claiming a penalty. The pass is woefully overhit, and Gray does well just to keep the ball in play, then wins a corner. Tarkowski wins a header, and Gordon bundles the loose ball home from a couple of yards. 13 min: Mings sends a long pass down the inside-right channel for Watkins, who takes the ball down neatly, but fails to find Ings in the middle. The ball drops to Gray, six yards out, but before he can poke home, Kamara arrives to deny him and concede a corner. The ball drops to Patterson on the edge of the box. 48 min: Gray flicks a header down the left to cleverly send Mykolenko into space. 46 min: Iwobi miscontrols then brings down McGinn as he prepares to scoot towards the Everton box. 49 min: Patterson takes on Digne down the right and wins. 50 min: Villa predictably struggle to clear the set piece.

Aston Villa vs Everton: Gerrard gets better of Lampard in tense clash (NBC Sports)

Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1 at Villa Park as Steven Gerrard got the better of Frank Lampard in their first-ever managerial duel.

Everton stayed compact in what essentially became a 5-3-1-1 formation and Lampard was keen to stay solid defensively and try to hurt Villa with direct play down the wings and from set-piece situations. Gerrard got the better of Lampard this time and his Villa side did just deserve the win. In and around the box they struggled to carve out big chances but they did look very good on the break and when they got the ball forward quickly and with purpose. It was only Week 2 but the passion on the sidelines showed us just how big of a season this is for the former England teammates and friends. They had a real go late on and almost snatched a point and you can’t fault the effort of this Everton side. From the first whistle Villa came flying out of the traps but they couldn’t quite find the cutting edge.

Onana was also praised despite being dispossessed in the build-up to Villa's second goal. "That might tarnish the win if we lose someone who is that important to us. It is clear that missing that focal point of the team will affect you. Lampard is without Dominic Calvert-Lewin through injury and having opted to leave Rondon on the bench, he went into the game without an out-and-out striker. "It was a pretty even game apart from the transitional goals. "He has not been stripped of his place, he was injured last week and wasn't 100 per cent so we went a different way," the Villa boss explained. "There has not been as much focus and attention outside the building but I understand when you make a decision there is a lot of noise. The fans were fantastic and you saw the response from the team." The Argentine made a real difference after he came on and seemed to enjoy himself. There were opportunities but when Dwight McNeil needed to find the pass he overhit it and when Demarai Gray needed to control the ball inside the box it escaped him. It was a nervy finish as both Salomon Rondon and Onana came close to finding an equaliser in stoppage time. In contrast, Everton looked a little disorganised despite the arrival of Conor Coady and remain pointless this season.

Former England teammates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard face off at Villa Park this weekend as Everton head to the West Midlands.

Frank Lampard! A match between two struggling sides desperate to improve and lay down a marker for the season, with tedious arguments over England's best midfielders rumbling on in the background... Villa have looked shaky from corners and they didn't deal with this one, with Gordon turning the ball in from close range. Ings and Philippe Coutinho seemed to get in each other's way from the cut-back, but the striker turns and rifles a shot past the helpless Pickford with his weaker left foot. 24th min: And just like that, Everton have the ball in the net... 41st min: Everton are trying to be a bit more assertive in possession, but Emiliano Martinez remains untroubled in the Villa goal. 1 hr 20 minutes to KO: Both these teams started the season with defeats: Everton were edged out at home by Chelsea, while Villa were beaten at Bournemouth. Gerrard's men attempted 13 shots from open play on the south coast, a figure bettered only by Tottenham Hotspur (15) and Newcastle United (17) last week. Ramsey teases a low ball across the six-yard box and Coutinho just can't reach it on the slide. It was a frantic finish, but Everton just couldn't find an equaliser, and Villa get their first points of the season. It was straight at the Villa keeper but he dealt with it well. This time, it's Onana who is dispossessed in the centre circle, and Buendia takes over: he slides in Watkins and races onto the return pass across the box to slot home, with Pickford out of position. Onana was a lively player off the bench for his Premier League debut and it was his marauding run and cross that saw Digne turn the ball into his own net. 85th min: GOAL! 2-0 TO VILLA! Once again, it comes from Everton losing the ball up the pitch.

He cuts it back from the byline but Holgate gets there first to clear the danger. Holgate tidies up again, as Ings latches on to a loose header from Tarkwoski and almost barrels through on goal. Buendia drives forwards on the break, and lays it to Watkins in the right of the area. Onana does brilliantly to get to the byline on the left, and fires a superb cross low through the six-yard box. Gordon now goes through on the left, drilling a low shot across Martinez who saves it. Rondon flicks a long ball into the area and Onana is on to it.

With Everton throwing everything forward, defender Mings made a superb late challenge to deny substitute Salomon Rondon as the home side held on to win. Having lost 2-0 at Bournemouth on the opening weekend, Villa's manager Steven Gerrard restored centre-back Tyrone Mings to the starting lineup and his side bounced back with an industrious performance, outmuscling an Everton team coached by Gerrard's former England teammate Frank Lampard. After good work down the right by Ollie Watkins, the 30-year-old swiped the ball from in front of onrushing teammate Philippe Coutinho before cutting back onto his left foot and rifling a shot past Jordan Pickford just past the half-hour.
