Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Labour caucus to meet over ... (RNZ)

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Labour caucus will meet this week to deal with the Gaurav Sharma situation.

"I want to be sure that I'm not misleading you on if there are any issues, minor or significant. I think people would understand if that may not be escalated to me. I want to ensure that we continue to take that team approach into resolving this issue. And we should be open to that," Ardern said. "Is this a tough place to be? She said Parliament had also been working on establishing a conduct commissioner. We do always need to make sure that they have avenues to raise disputes when they arise, I see that as very different to whether or not people believe they've been bullied." "It's clear that there wasn't always agreement that was necessary, by Gaurav. But that doesn't necessarily constitute what he has characterised as bullying. There were also privacy concerns to take into consideration, with staff easily identifiable. Whilst I don't believe they have substantiated his claims of bullying we'll always look to improve our processes, because some of them are new and they're there to look after our staff, but ultimately to also look after our MPs." She said the way the matter was raised in the public domain raised concerns for the wellbeing of the MPs in question, but also for the wellbeing of their staff members. In a post-Cabinet media briefing this afternoon, Ardern said Labour would seek a resolution in a caucus meeting this week, "but front and centre will always be the wellbeing of our staff but also of our MPs".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has answered questions on alleged bullying within her party following claims made by Labour MP Dr Gaurav Sharma. The Hamilton.

Sharma said the hiring freeze on him was only lifted on Thursday, following a meeting to which he had taken his lawyer. She said that had included the freeze on hiring while they put in place coaching and mentoring. Ardern said she had gone through the documentation that existed around these accusations. Labour is so "strong" that one of their own MPs has come out accusing the PM's office, the Deputy PM's office, the Speaker's Office and Parliamentary Services of bullying. The answer: The number of renters would be reduced by the number of properties sold. I predict obfuscation, deflection, and rejection of the premise. All of a sudden it is said to be the Government's fault. The gossip, the slander, the back-biting, the dirty politics in the workplaces and in the Beehive, the list goes on. The advert being played for TVNZ+ showing a street robbery and the bad guys fleeing in a car driven by an accomplice is bad taste. The biggest concern is the attitude and behaviour of young people culminating in ram raids and other illegal activity with the belief they are immune from consequences. This is the mantra of totalitarianism. Coupled with his record in turning around basket-case boards and public businesses, he is the man for the time.

Gaurav Sharma and the Labour caucus: it is now a question of trust (Stuff.co.nz)

OPINION: Until Monday, Sharma's actions could be explained away. Dropping a new accusation in time for the PM's weekly press conference ended that.

They work for you, not the parties or people in power. In fact, Sharma, appears to have no ideological beef or much disagreement except for how he feels he has been treated through the process of sorting out his office after “issues” were identified. The fact both Duncan Webb and Kieran McAnulty, who Sharma has accused, are well-regarded within Labour and the Parliament as a whole, does not help his cause. Whether Sharma came up with that plan himself is another, and potentially more worrying question for Labour. OPINION: It now comes down to a question of trust. To help bolster his claim he produced some nameless text messages, where it wasn't even clear who was saying what and which seemed to prove nothing.

Sharma labels McAnulty a bully (Wairarapa Times Age)

Labour Party MP Gaurav Sharma has come out swinging in a scathing social media post labelling Kieran McAnulty a bully.

“I stand by my claims that I have been subjected to ongoing bullying by the Parliamentary Service and the Labour Whips, and none of my concerns have been investigated.” He said the presence of his lawyer in a meeting with the Labour Party Whips and Parliamentary Services last week changed the discussion. “Instead of listening to my concerns, this was actively turned into a major project by the Labour Party Whips to bring me into disrepute and to rein me in.” “But what was most sickening was that when I came out, I saw photos of him drinking and celebrating the America’s Cup final while I sat in his office like a school kid at the headmaster’s office.” The 2600-word diatribe provided a year and a half timeline of interactions with Parliamentary Services and Labour Party Whips, from whom he claimed to have faced bullying and harassment from “day zero”. Sharma said he had “hundreds of pages” of documentation to support his claims, but his concerns were dismissed.

Opinion: Politics aside, why can't we pronounce Gaurav Sharma ... (1 News)

1News' Vandhna Bhan says hearing Sharma's name said incorrectly is a situation familiar to many communities in NZ.

Their stories of racism are rife, so a simple mispronunciation of their name was probably trivial compared to the discrimination they experienced. Especially ones like Hindi where the phonetics is very similar to that of Te Reo Māori. And why aren’t we holding our leaders accountable for not doing so? So, we give up and accept “Shaa-ma”. I’ve lived in this country for over 20 years and not once have I heard a non-ethnic person pronounce Sharma and Kumar correctly. It’s laughable by just how wrong it is and infuriating to know how many people are saying it incorrectly because of this one tool. So, my question is why haven’t any party members corrected the Prime Minister? Do they not cringe every time they hear a name being said incorrectly?

Judgment day for Gaurav Sharma: what can Labour do? (New Zealand Herald)

Labour's Hamilton West MP Gaurav Sharma will face judgment from his caucus colleagues this afternoon after making a string of public accusations that he was ...

At the time, the Labour President was Andrew Little, who is a member of Labour's current caucus and a senior Cabinet minister. The last Labour MP to be expelled from caucus was Chris Carter, a former minister. Carter has since re-joined the Labour Party. Caucus expelled Carter in the middle of the year. After the caucus makes its decision, the party will consider the next move. However, that is not a quick process and would not necessarily be successful. It was timed just as the Prime Minister started speaking at her post-Cabinet press conference. Caucus is a confidential forum and sets its own rules. Those channels included the whip's office, the Labour leader or someone she assigned to deal with it. Kicking an MP out of caucus and kicking an MP out of the Labour Party are different matters. He had gone public as a last resort. He also claimed other MPs had complained about being bullied – although no other MP has yet come forward.

'Will it be fair?': Labour MP speaks ahead of special caucus meeting (New Zealand Herald)

It was still up in the air whether Sharma would attend the special caucus meeting.

However, last week, Ardern rejected Sharma's allegations about bullying but confirmed the party whips had been dealing with him over employment issues. Suspending Sharma from caucus rather than expelling him would mean he stayed under the Labour tent and his vote stayed with Labour, but he did not attend caucus meetings or represent Labour in official formats. "After all of that, I thought naming the accused - Kieran - I thought they would do something but they didn't ... but it wasn't like I was timing [it]." While he was unclear if he would attend, Sharma said he was "just waiting to be heard". Asked whether he would entertain staying on as an independent MP, Sharma said "I guess so", but clarified that he hadn't thought deeply about it. "The process has to be fair and will it be fair is the question." Asked whether he would request his colleagues maintain his position as an active caucus member, Sharma said he would simply lay out the facts. He said it was "hard to tell" what decision he thought caucus might arrive at. Speaking to the Herald at midday, Sharma said he was hoping to attend the caucus meeting but said he may miss it, given he had prior commitments. Sharma said he had been given "very short notice" of the meeting, claiming he was told by current senior whip Duncan Webb between 5-6pm yesterday that the meeting would be held today. Sharma also indicated that if he was expelled from the party, he might stay on as an independent MP. If he does appear on the 2.30pm Zoom call with his colleagues, Sharma says he will be asking for a "fair trial", including an investigation into bullying claims made about himself by former staff, and about Labour's former senior whip Kieran McAnulty - made by Sharma.

PM Jacinda Ardern said the Labour rookie's suspension marks a "conclusion" to the saga - but it's actually far from the end.

Ardern said this was not a “formal” caucus meeting, and it did not predetermine the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting. we have not discussed any of those [possibilities] further than the decision on suspension, [and] the prospect of expulsion if there is further breaches,” Ardern said. - Labour MPs decided “unanimously” to suspend Sharma until December, when the issue would be revisited, Ardern said. They work for you, not the parties or people in power. He will continue to be the MP for Hamilton West, and he will be expected to attend the House when it sits. Sharma was said to be unhappy with the intervention, which included “performance management” and a hiring freeze on his office. “There were grounds for expulsion, because the caucus rules are very clear on what constitutes serious misconduct,” Ardern said. Ardern said this was to create a “safe space” for MPs to share their thoughts without the risk of it being made public – presumably by Sharma. Sharma could not be contacted by the Herald regarding his response to the decision but in an Sharma reportedly indicated "closer to 3pm" was suitable, but when he was contacted to confirm the meeting's start time of 2.30pm, Sharma did not respond. Monday's meeting, which was not described as a "formal" caucus meeting given not all members were present, was a forum for MPs to express their concerns about Sharma's actions, Ardern said. "The reason we were having to have [Monday's] meeting in the first place was because confidential conversations amongst MPs were being shared publicly, that's a clear breach of the rules." Sharma could not be contacted before deadline but prior to yesterday's Zoom caucus meeting, he indicated to the Herald he might stand as an independent MP if he was expelled by the caucus. One potential reason for Sharma's absence could be his suspicion a decision had been pre-determined during a secret meeting of the caucus without Sharma held on Monday night - something Sharma was mistakenly made aware of. Ardern fronted a press conference yesterday, which had been delayed after efforts were made to contact Sharma about the result of the meeting, as he had not attended. Ardern claimed party whips offered Sharma various times when the meeting could be held to fit into his busy schedule, as he described to the Herald yesterday. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she had not spoken to Gaurav Sharma since announcing his suspension from caucus. She said she had been clear that Monday's late night meeting would not pre-determine the result after Sharma's serious misconduct and ...

Sharma's position within the caucus was discussed at a caucus meeting yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately for Ardern, one of the MPs mistakenly told Sharma of the late-night meeting, which is thought to have informed his absence from yesterday's official caucus meeting as he may have suspected his suspension was pre-determined. In his interview with the Herald prior to the meeting, Sharma said he wanted an investigation into the claims about himself and those he made against McAnulty. She denied any issues regarding bullying had been raised during that meeting. She said the caucus had sent a message to Sharma saying they needed to rebuild trust. Asked whether the party knows where he is and how he is, Ardern said they had made "every effort" to make sure he was supported.
