A species of cactus new to Michigan has been discovered in the mountains of the Upper Peninsula.
After spotting about six of the cacti, he posed for a selfie next to the flowering discovery. He decided to pause his field surveys on a rainy day in August to track down the cactus. The Huron Mountains look over Lake Superior in Marquette and Baraga county. Biological consultant Ryne Rutherford found a species of cactus new to Michigan in the Huron Mountains. He thought it would be a fragile prickly pear. The glades have granite rock exposed at the surface, and they only occur around Marquette County.
