Casemiro Transfer May Help, But It Also Underscores Man United's ... (Sports Illustrated)

Perhaps this is the beginning of a new Manchester United, where it wins some games, stops the rot and starts to clear the ground for the ten Hag project. Casemiro and Fred have started 10 games together for Brazil since the start of last year, so perhaps there’s a knock-on effect that translates to the club level and helps his much-maligned countryman. Why was it not used before, when new signings could have properly integrated in preseason instead of during a bottom-of-the-table crisis two games into the new season? And when that deal stalled, United turned to Casemiro, a midfielder of a totally different profile. And yet with the signing of Casemiro, United now has more than a quarter of the Real Madrid lineups that won consecutive Champions League titles in 2017 and ’18, and that side categorically did not play hard-pressing, Ajax-style football. [Casemiro](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/08/19/casemiro-transfer-carlo-ancelotti-real-madrid-manchester-united) is a very good footballer.

Man Utd target Casemiro has 'change of heart' and reaches decision ... (Daily Express)

CASEMIRO has reportedly emerged as a priority target for Manchester United in the middle of the park.

However, it seems as though Casemiro has emerged as the chosen one and it remains to be seen whether a full agreement can be reached in the not-too-distant future. United are said to have stepped up their pursuit of Casemiro after missing out on the signing of Adrien Rabiot, who was recently in talks with the club but is not expected to join Erik ten Hag's squad as a result of his exorbitant wage demands. Ancelotti's admiration for the player could potentially spell trouble with regards to United's hopes of snapping him up over the next few days, though. United were previously left frustrated in their efforts to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona before pulling out of a move for Rabiot earlier this month over the Frenchman's lucrative salary expectations. My first professional match was scheduled in the ‘local’ town of Griffith, NSW, a mere 360km and more than four hours’ bus trip away. After 10 minutes there was a foot of water on the pitch/pond. Alas, a lack of floodlights – and a kick-off time that didn’t factor in extra-time – forced an abandonment on 105 minutes with the score 5-5. I gave my ticket to the barman who was also a Blue for the rearranged fixture, as I couldn’t make it. Man United closing in on Real's Casemiro (South Coast Register)

More irons are in the fire as United look to kickstart their ailing campaign at a time of intense pressure on the Glazer family. The fee for Casemiro could rise to 70m euros (A102 million) if clauses are met, with a four-year deal plus the option of a further season on the table. Manchester United are closing in on the big-money signing of Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro, the PA news agency understands.

Superstar or superflop? Will Casemiro fit Man Utd? (BBC Sport)

Whether or not the 30-year-old defensive midfielder, who has won five Champions League titles, ends up being a superstar or superflop, the only certain thing is ...

0.8 Those sort of figures suggest Tchouameni was never bought in just to make up the numbers. Maybe that is no surprise; the wear and tear on players in that most taxing defensive midfield role is considerable. But you don't survive and then ultimately triumph in a bear pit like Real Madrid without being made of the strongest of stuff. Casemiro might not be enough to help them to climb up the table. Casemiro will improve the side but it seems unlikely he will make a huge difference to United on his own. If he decides to play Casemiro in a 4-2-3-1 alongside Fred or Scott McTominay, Ten Hag will have a physical side but one that lacks control. For Ten Hag, it will be a case of finding the right balance to make sure the new arrival fits in as best as possible. Ancelotti has asked him to go forward more often, occasionally taking on an offensive midfield role, and he scored seven times last season - equalling his career best for a campaign. That could be a problem with United when faced with teams that pressure high if he is expected to drive with the ball. While the unglamorous Casemiro added some of that balance, he was also prone to mistakes. It's said that Hollywood director Cecil B DeMille could find nobodies and turn them into stars.

Man United's new signing Casemiro: Everything you need to know (ESPN)

Manchester United have spent €60m to bring in world-class midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid, but what can they expect from him?

[Barcelona](/soccer/team?id=83)'s [Sergio Busquets](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/121893/Sergio-Busquets), had more ball recoveries than Casemiro (230) in LaLiga last season, and that's playing for a Madrid team which tends to dominate possession. He might be 30, but he's still vastly experienced and one of the best in the world in his position; United couldn't really say no when the opportunity came up. He breaks up play, reads the game well and he's comfortable sitting in front of the back four -- which is something United have missed even before Ten Hag arrived. The Brazilian's role in that trio was well-defined as most defensive-minded of the three, protecting Madrid's defence, winning the ball back and providing a platform on which more attack-minded colleagues could flourish -- although he has shown a growing desire to get forward over the years, too. He has been compared in style to legendary Real Madrid defensive midfielder Claude Makelele, though Casemiro's positional sense and determination mark him out as one of the best around. Casemiro usually sits deep as the central pivot in front of the centre-backs in a 4-3-3 system.

Beltran's contract was set to expire in the summer of 2023, leaving him exposed to a big-money offer. His 73.21 percent tackle success rate was third-best of any La Liga midfielder with at least 20 games played, and at a higher volume than anyone in the top 20. Beltran produced the seventh-most ball recoveries of all La Liga midfielders, and distributed passes at a 91% success rate. Unfortunately for Manchester United, football isn't played in a vacuum and neither is the business of football transfers. Last season in the Spanish top flight, Beltran produced a campaign for the ages at the midfield position. Throw in a few more capable midfielders as well, and this squad is in desperate need of a complete rebuilding. Consequently, he currently sits as one of the only players at Old Trafford who can say he's lived up to the hype. Casemiro is a European great, there's no doubt, but he'll be 31 in February, meaning his window of top-level contribution is closing. Last season, he was beaten once a game on the dribble, won just 51% of his ground duels, and suffered from similar ailments as mentioned earlier about Fred. This transfer can be described as little more than a panicked reaction to desperation brought on by recent results, rather than any kind of long-term vision to rebuild the club back to the heights of Sir Alex Ferguson. His 40.48 percent tackle success rate was the seventh-lowest of any midfielder in the Premier League with at least 20 appearances, and came at a significantly higher volume than anyone above him on the list. Convincing the Brazilian to leave his Real Madrid home for the struggling Premier League side required a massive transfer sum as well as a huge salary offer.

MADRID (AP) — Brazil midfielder Casemiro wants to leave Real Madrid, coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday, amid reported interest from Manchester United.

“Then we’ve got Kroos, who can play in that position too, just like he did in my second year here, and there’s Camavinga as well.” The 30-year-old Casemiro has been with Madrid since 2013 and is regarded as one of the world’s best holding midfielders. Ancelotti said Madrid has replacements for Casemiro, though, including young France midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who was signed in the offseason. There are talks right now, he’s still a Real Madrid player at this stage, but he wants to leave.” “He wants to try a new challenge, a new opportunity,” Ancelotti said in a news conference. Madrid thanked Casemiro and called him a club legend.

Man United's new signing Casemiro: Everything you need to know (ESPN.co.uk)

Manchester United have spent €60m to bring in world-class midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid, but what can they expect from him?

He breaks up play, reads the game well and he's comfortable sitting in front of the back four -- which is something United have missed even before Ten Hag arrived. [Barcelona](/football/team?id=83)'s [Sergio Busquets](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/121893/Sergio-Busquets), had more ball recoveries than Casemiro (230) in LaLiga last season, and that's playing for a Madrid team which tends to dominate possession. He might be 30, but he's still vastly experienced and one of the best in the world in his position; United couldn't really say no when the opportunity came up. Moving from De Jong to Casemiro doesn't point to much of a recruitment plan, but the Brazilian makes United better. Casemiro walks straight into United's team because he's better than anyone Ten Hag has in that position. There will be questions about why Real Madrid have allowed him to leave, but the bottom line is that those reasons are not United's concern. The Brazilian's role in that trio was well-defined as most defensive-minded of the three, protecting Madrid's defence, winning the ball back and providing a platform on which more attack-minded colleagues could flourish -- although he has shown a growing desire to get forward over the years, too. Casemiro has a reputation among opposition fans for avoiding deserved bookings, but he still picked up 11 yellow cards in LaLiga last season -- although surprisingly he's only been sent off twice in almost a decade in Spain. He has been compared in style to legendary Real Madrid defensive midfielder Claude Makelele, though Casemiro's positional sense and determination mark him out as one of the best around. His pass completion rate is solid -- in LaLiga last year it was 86% -- but well behind someone like Kroos, who topped the charts in [Spain](/football/team?id=164) with 94.9%. Their only question should be does he immediately improve the team and the answer is, undeniably, yes. Casemiro usually sits deep as the central pivot in front of the centre-backs in a 4-3-3 system.
