Scott McLaughlin was leading in the hunt for his first IndyCar oval victory when rain delayed the race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

He lost a second in the pits to McLaughlin, who had made his final stop a lap earlier. “We could have held one for probably one more lap, but our whole strategy was to just push because we don’t know when it’s going to rain,” Malukas told NBC Sports’ Kevin Lee. "Wet and dry, red flags and clear tracks, beautiful overtakes and recovery drives - the season finale in Seoul had it all. Restricted to just 25 cars, all of which have naturally been spoken for already, the McLaren Solus GT looks very much like the 2017 Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo. The competition is such like a small, 0.001 percent of a group. So to be able to not only be part of that group, but to compete inside that group, that’s such a unique thing in itself. The decision to introduce sprint races in MotoGP follows Formula 1 adopting a similar format last year. A sprint race will be held every Saturday afternoon following qualifying and will be run between 50 and 75 kilometres depending on the circuit – half the distance of a MotoGP grand prix. "The competition – it has to be one of the only sports in the world where there’s only 20 people that are doing it. But it’s been good fun and I feel like I’ve been driving well.” Newgarden says the level of competition in IndyCar is something to be celebrated. You look at IndyCar, you can be with any team and have a shot at winning a race when you show up every single weekend. “I think it’s been good,” said Bottas. “There is nothing else that comes close to it.

Only three races remain in the IndyCar season, as the race for the championship is going to come down to the wire.

Dixon, Power and Takuma Sato have also won since IndyCar came back to the track after a 14-year hiatus in 2017. In the return to the track previously known as Gateway Motorsports Park, a plethora of current drivers have been victorious at the 1.25-mile circuit. The Chip Ganassi driver was able to leap frog Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson, who had a mechanical failure that led to a disappointing 14th-place finish in Nashville. The win also sees the New Zealander pass the legend Mario Andretti for second all-time in wins (53). If Dixon can somehow rally back to catch the former champion, it would mark his record-tying seventh championship, evening him with the great A.J. Had Malukas had faith in the high line on worn tyres a bit sooner in the final laps, he might’ve cleared McLaughlin quicker and had a better crack at beating Josef Newgarden to the win. Instead he’s still seventh, with a daunting deficit of 58 points and only two races to do something about it. and then a “stagnant” race from there. But he was solidly last for the first part of the Gateway race. The stat that’s probably most telling: there’s a seven-driver title fight still going on, featuring drivers from three different teams. Because you could actually make a case for him being in the losers’ section. But Power’s pace declined as the evening went on. McLaughlin himself is in something of a winner/loser no man’s land this week. David Malukas's 1st IndyCar podium could either lock him in at Dale Coyne Racing for the future or make him that much more appealing to other suitors.

So I took the low line, thinking, ‘Ahh, he’s a rookie, he might, but he might not.’ And then he did. With Chip Ganassi Racing in the midst of a federal civil lawsuit with defending champ Alex Palou, there’s been heavy speculation around the No. Though Malukas’s signing was announced under the pretense of a multi-year deal last fall, the rookie confirmed that not everything is buttoned up with two races left in his rookie season. And for the next 10 laps, he realizes now, Malukas bided his time, perhaps not really realizing just what he had underneath himself. I mean, I was nervous, but I was trying so hard not to get overexcited and do something stupid.
