While recovering Costa sat on the canvas and Rockhold rubbed the blood across his own face. Rockhold came out of the round like a new man landing body kicks and a takedown, but the onslaught didn’t last long and Costa took back control of the round. Costa controlled much of the round, but Rockhold landed a series of body kicks on Costa and they clinched to end the round.

Paulo Costa reacted to his UFC 278 win over Luke Rockhold and the gruesome scene that ended the fight.

“Yes, I thought when I saw him put his hands on his knees and show how tired he was, I thought maybe this guy won’t finish the last moment of the third round,” Costa said. The Brazilian isn’t sure whether or not he has another fight on his contract, though he certainly indicated Saturday’s fight would be his final obligation. All the signs Rockhold gave him indicated he wouldn’t need judges to deliver the final verdict. Maybe he was so frustrated and angry because he was losing the fight. All he had to endure in those final seconds was some of Rockhold’s blood on his face and mouth. Once he figured it out, he shared the reaction many did to Rockhold smearing blood on his face.
