Work had not started at the Hawkins construction site on Pakenham St West when the explosion occurred. Workers have been sent home and the site will be closed today. Four of the injured have been left with serious injuries and have been taken to Middlemore Hospital and one suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Auckland City Hospital. A man who had worked with those injured told Stuff the explosion happened inside a portacom at the site. The blast at the Hawkins construction site is being blamed on a gas cooker but authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosion. Shredded items of clothing can be seen on the road near the scene of the explosion.

Walsh said they attempted to help the injured by cooling off their burns with fire hoses. Police on the scene said four people had been seriously injured and taken to Middlemore Hospital, where the regional burns unit is located. Firefighters tried to help those injured in a gas explosion by cooling off their burns with fire hoses.

Fire, ambulance and police staff are responding to the incident on Halsey St.

They were taken to Auckland Hospital. Four people in a serious condition were taken to Middlemore Hospital, while one initially classed as critical has since changed to moderate. Police, fire and St John staff rushed to a street near Auckland's waterfront after an explosion left five people hurt.
