Lawson says F1 debut at Spa was 'a crazy experience' (F1i.com)

AlphaTauri rookie Liam Lawson ran with F1's big boys for the first time on Friday at Spa and described the experience as "crazy".

I want to say a big thank you to Scuderia AlphaTauri and Red Bull for giving me this opportunity. He did a good job." "The car was great to drive, the limit is so much further than I was ready for, it took a bit of time to get used to that, but I think I built up the pace steadily on the Hards and was ready to push on the Softs at the end, so it’s a bit of a shame I didn’t get the opportunity to really go for it.

Charlotte often follows her beau around the world to different race tracks and visited Red Bull's base in Milton Keynes with him last year. Although New Zealand haven't got a rich history of producing F1 drivers, Lawson seems destined to get a shot at some point in the not too distant future. The pair have kept their relationship quite private since they began dating in 2019. Racing has been all he's known since he started karting at the age of seven. "Super excited to say I’ll be doing my first FP1 this weekend at Spa," he told the team's media after getting fitted in Pierre Gasly's car. After three-and-a-half years in their junior program, he'll be driving for AlphaTauri in first practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.

“it was a crazy experience. After his Formula1 session, Lawson then qualified in P6 in the F2 with a time of 1:58.976, just +0.744s off Felipe Drugovich in pole. “But towards the end of it I started to feel quite comfortable and the tyres were dropping off a bit because I’d done a few laps, but I was definitely ready to put the softs on. It was unfortunate we didn’t get to run the soft’s at the end cause I had a nice ten laps to build up on the hard’s and not over push, just getting used to it,”Lawson said. Lawson came out and tested for 14 laps in the one hour session, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz setting the benchmark time of 1:46.538. The time saw Lawson finish in P19 of the 20 drivers in Pierre Gasly’s car, with Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas not recording a time, limited to only two laps.

There are pros and cons, it’s still a bigger deficit trying to go from the F1 car to F2, but I guess one of the good sides of doing it was that I got to do quite a few laps of the track. The car is very different, it’s obviously a lot nicer to drive and a lot faster. The run was okay, we were interrupted by red flags and the rain at the end, which meant I never got to do the soft tyre run that we planned on doing, just sustainable running on hards but it was nice to get some laps in.

But on the restart the car was straight away good again. "I was devastated when the safety car came out, " Lawson said. One of those was current competition leader Felipe Drugovich, who got onto the soft tyres and began to make moves through the field when the safety car had lifted. His team assured him the issue would settle down, and by the seventh lap Lawson's lead was more than 1.5sec and he began to pull away from the field. "I was watching the screens around the whole track trying to look for Felipe to see where he was, but luckily it was enough." By the 11th lap, his lead was at more than 4sec and the race was his for the taking.

We asked Lawson what his target was for the remaining rounds of the season bearing in mind the current competitive state of the standings. Given that Lawson is now the Red Bull reserve driver and has already been confirmed to retain the role for 2023, it may be a concern that Lawson, who is in his second year of F2, is 20 points behind his rookie Carlin teammate Logan Sargeant at this point in the season. In comparison, championship leader and Spa polesitter Felipe Drugovich has averaged a qualifying position of 5.18 throughout the season. “I think definitely being in the environments of Formula 1 again, and actually being in an official session, that definitely reminds you of why you’re doing this and what the end goal is; not that motivation has ever been an issue for me. Speaking to F1 Feeder Series after the race, we asked Lawson whether his hour in an F1 car helped motivate him specifically for this weekend’s F2 action. Following Jüri Vips’ disgraced exit from the role of Red Bull reserve driver, it has been Liam Lawson that has taken the opportunities available recently, including his maiden FP1 appearance for AlphaTauri at Spa-Francorchamps on Friday.
