"I got a little lucky with Scottie (Scheffler) not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play. McIlroy hit the pin with a chip from the back of the 16th green and poured in from eight feet to save par, which was enough for the solo lead when Scheffler did not get up and down from the sand, while Im recovered from a double-bogey at the 14th to birdie the 15th and 17th to get within one. A close-range birdie at the eighth was enough for Scheffler to edge back ahead until McIlroy rolled in from eight feet at the 12th to get to 20 under, with Im a shot off the pace after cancelling out a bogey at the eighth by picking up a shot at the par-three next and birdieing the 12th.

“It’s hard to watch this happen to a guy of this pedigree, this caliber. McIlroy coolly canned the par putt to stay 21 under and Scheffler missed from 9 feet. This was always going to be a hard day for him, a hard weekend, and he’s really feeling the heat now.” McIlroy made birdie one hole later to tie for the lead. Trying for his fifth win of the season, Scheffler struggled to three bogeys in his first six holes. “I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post. It’s only after the fact that it’s fun.” He got the Masters and I got this.” The Northern Irishman spotted Scheffler six strokes in the staggered-start scoring system implemented at the Tour Championship. He chipped away at Scheffler’s lead with another 67 on Friday and then made his move on Saturday. 1 Scottie Scheffler with a final-round 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf Club to win the Tour Championship. McIlroy became the first player to win the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour’s season-long competition, three times.

World No.1 blows $26m prize in brutal seven-shot implosion as Rory wins thriller.

“There’s one thing I want to say, I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this today,” McIlroy said on the 18th green. Rory just played a really good round of golf. Meanwhile, neither Cameron Smith or Adam Scott got their challenges going at East Lake. “I told him we are one-all in Georgia this year. “I really fought hard. However, given Scheffler ultimately shared second place with Sungjae Im, his meltdown was worth $A17.8 million.

I believe in the players on this tour," McIlroy said in the trophy presentation. Scheffler badly misread a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th to tie, sending the TOUR Championship to the final hole with $18 million on the line. "I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that." McIlroy holed a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead. Scheffler, who birdied four of six holes Sunday morning to finish the third round and build a six-shot lead, lost it in the first seven holes. McIlroy won $18 million prize to go along with the trophy.

And it was McIlroy who joined Tiger Woods in leading a momentous player-only meeting last week that led to significant changes ahead for the tour. And at the end, the tour's biggest voice had its biggest trophy. Most of that fell to Scheffler, who looked like different players when he returned Sunday morning and after a two-hour break before the final round. McIlroy won the FedEx Cup in 2016 in a playoff. Scheffler badly misread a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th to tie, sending the Tour Championship to the final hole with $18 million on the line. 7 that led to pockets of cheers from corporate hospitality tents across the course. McIlroy holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead. He won the FedEx Cup again in 2019, the first year of a staggered start. "I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that." Scheffler was hoping to cap off the best year in golf with the FedEx Cup title. The last one to do that was Dustin Johnson in 2017 at the HSBC Champions. 1 seed, who began with a two-shot lead and never trailed until the 70th hole.

Then it swung toward the hole, McIlroy stepping back — and willing, praying, something — a few steps before it rolled into the cup. Scheffler finished in a tie for second with Sungjae Im, one of golf’s most promising young players. By the final holes on Sunday evening, the tour’s worries about crowning a champion who might soon defect to LIV Golf, the new series that has challenged generations of golf orthodoxy and attracted some of the game’s finest players and biggest brands, had faded. McIlroy’s fourth round began with a bogey, but he made birdie on No. Stories like this are possible because of our deep commitment to original reporting, produced by a global staff of over 1,700 journalists who have all dedicated themselves to helping you understand the world. He admitted that his loss at the Open last month—where he hit all 18 greens in regulation in the final round and still came up two shots short of Smith—stung. Throw in his European Tour success and it’s easy why there’s no reason to get nervous over a payday. I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that. As it turned out, he would have been tied for 13th in the field if you simply went by raw 72-hole scores. “Even the guys that have went to LIV have had to deal with a lot. Over the course of the remaining 12 holes, it was certainly fair to wonder if dollar signs ever crept into their minds. Two birdies to end his third round Sunday morning helped get him in the final group with Scheffler—but still six behind. He bogeyed three of the first six holes, and it was game on. Then he opened the tournament on Thursday with a triple bogey, followed by a bogey. And the PGA Tour has had to dig deep, coming up with nearly $200 million or so to enhance the lives of many who are already wealthy beyond belief. For Rory McIlroy, it was never seemingly about the riches. It’s been a tumultuous time for the game, no matter what you think of LIV Golf, which exists because of, well, the money.

Rory McIlroy can't stop, won't stop daggering LIV Golf lawyers (GolfDigest.com)

The prince of the PGA Tour won't EVER let LIV Golf lawyers live down the hackneyed way they described the FedEx Cup in court earlier this month.

McIlroy also got another dig in on LIV Golf during the presser when he noted that it wasn't until the 70th hole of the tournament that he actually was leading for the first time all week. All kidding aside, there was a point during his Tour Championship press conference where McIlroy started to express true frustration about the LIV situation. In turn, golf Twitter had a field day with what was characterized as an out-of-touch description of the postseason by the attorneys that also wasn’t convincing to the U.S. Well, in case you don’t remember, Robert Walters, a lawyer who represented LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones in their court hearing earlier this month seeking an injunction to gain access to the PGA Tour’s playoff events, had described the FedEx Cup as “the Super Bowl of golf" and the hardest trophy to win. On Sunday at East Lake, McIlroy enjoyed another gratuitous moment at the expense of LIV Golf. I feel sort of bad I pipped him to the post.

McIlroy has repeatedly insisted that nothing beats the PGA Tour. “I hate what it’s doing to the game of golf. Like it’s going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks’ time (for the BMW Championship) and seeing 18 of them (LIV Golf players) there. And I’ve played all over the world. At St Andrews, he held a four-shot lead during the final round but his putter went cold as Smith stormed home. I really do,” McIlroy said. I hate it. I really do. Both were beaming smiles and shared a brief word on East Lake’s 18th green. I believe in the game of golf, I believe in this tour in particular, I believe in the players on this Tour,” McIlroy said. Much of that battle has been done through words, but it’s also been McIlroy’s mission to prove to the world’s best golfers on the course that the best place in the world to play is still on the PGA Tour. For a Tour that has taken many blows this year, and will need to absorb many more in the weeks and months ahead, it was a thrilling showdown to savour.

McIlroy's $18 million prize eclipses the entire purses of events such as the Masters, PGA Championship, Open Championship and U.S. And before his tournament even started, he was four strokes behind the leader, Scheffler, because of the Tour Championship's handicap scoring. McIlroy faced adversity at the start and end of this weekend's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Indeed, none of the other golfers in the field even bogeyed both of their first two holes. McIlroy found himself six strokes behind Scheffler to start the fourth round.

Rory McIlroy takes home the biggest prize as PGA Tour's wild ... (The Washington Post)

The PGA Tour's rocky season amid the LIV Golf threat ended on a high note with McIlroy bringing home the $18 million prize.

I’ve had a really great year, and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that. I play to win tournaments, and I play to have fun and do my best and see where the game can take me. The fourth round began two hours after the third round ended, and the tilt began moments after the fourth round began. Then had come a break before the fourth round, so Scheffler and McIlroy and Jon Rahm and others had lunched together. But at the end of the day, it’s such a gift to be out here playing golf for money, and I can’t — I’m just so thankful to be out here.” With that said, the weekend could turn to the weekdays and the LIV plays — the presumed resumption of who might defect next to the exhibition-style series, which already had snared 10 of the current top 50, albeit zero of the top 10. I believe in the players on this tour. I believe in this tour, in particular. Soon McIlroy said to the bunched-in crowd: “I believe in the game of golf. Smith, 29, headlined that list, and he played through the 87-degree swelter here, finishing 20th of the 29 contestants. “I have a whopping one week off coming up and then I go to Europe for three out of four weeks,” joked McIlroy, who will play the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in England and head back to St. A backdoor second at the Masters—thanks to a closing 64—was followed by a solo eighth at the PGA and a T-5 at the U.S. “As much as I’m a willing participant in all of this, I sometimes do need to reboot myself for the sake of my golf game.” He pocketed $5.75 million for his share of second, to go with the $14 million he amassed from four PGA Tour titles this year, which included the Masters. “Every chance I get, I’m trying to defend what I feel is the best place to play elite professional golf in the world,” McIlroy said. It doesn’t make it that much easier to get over, but it’s great to end the season on a high note like this. McIlroy still got himself into a share of the 54-hole lead with Viktor Hovland, but faded to third place, his putter betraying him once more. The tour’s top players will play in the same events, and more of them, starting in 2023, while being rewarded for their efforts. “When I get inside the ropes, no one can get to me.” For his 22nd PGA Tour victory, McIlroy shot a final-round 66 to finish at 21 under par. ATLANTA — For Rory McIlroy, playing golf has been the easiest part of a truly tumultuous 2022. Being the standard bearer for the PGA Tour in its battle with LIV Golf has been the challenge.

If he wasn't one of the 25 best golfers of all time, it's easy to see him commenting and bantering about all of this, just like you and I. McIlroy has clearly been the right man to meet this moment. This came to a head last week during the BMW Championship when a Player Advisory Council meeting (McIlroy is the president) was followed by aforementioned McIlroy- and Woods-led players-only meeting. TMRW could go anywhere and be successful, and the duo collectively could have cashed in with LIV Golf to the tune of somewhere around $1 billion. His partnership with Woods in TMRW Sports, an organization that will host simulated competitions in affiliation with the PGA Tour, stands to make both men a lot of money. It's in some ways fitting that I was able to get this done today to sort of round off a year that has been very, very challenging and different." Rory has been adamant, both publicly and privately in 2022, that LIV Golf is not good for the sport. On Sunday, perhaps the best player in the world defeated the same number of people on the course at East Lake Golf Club as he has off the course this year: all of them. He has become the rarest of all titans, somebody who is just as talented and influential behind the scenes as he is in front of the camera. Then he buried that 31-foot birdie putt, a nod to what has easily been the best putting year of his career. McIlroy's momentum halted immediately with a bogey at the first Sunday, but he plastered the field for the remainder of the day, playing the next 17 holes in 5 under. Some players move on to become coaches and others join the media as analysts, but there's a select few who move into roles as primary decision-makers of their leagues or the teams within.

McIlroy’s next stop will be at the DP World Tour’s PGA Championship, which begins on the West Course at Wentworth on Thursday week. It's both a miracle and a relief that he came through in Atlanta; to have won only a Canadian Open and a CJ Cup in the fall, after a season like this, would be practically tragicomic. "It's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there," McIlroy said, referring to LIV golfers who are currently in the field at next week’s BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour, in which Rory is also competing. And, of course, there was the coup de grace, his wrenching fall from the lead on Sunday at St. If you want to know about that stuff, you know who of the two players you have to ask." There was the hovering at the U.S. There was his surge on Sunday at Augusta, capped by the hole-out on 18 for a closing 64 to finish (albeit a distant) second. So thorough was his influence (and perhaps his control) that Jon Rahm, when asked about potential changes to the new format, laughed and said, "You're asking the wrong guy. Time and time again all year, the now 21-time tour winner has been vocal in his opposition to the Saudi-funded upstarts. The fact that there's an excuse to cut him a massive check at the final hour must seem like history and fate aligning on the side of cosmic justice. Now that Rory McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup and its $18 million prize, what stands out in the aftermath is his own Zelig-esque ubiquity in this strangest of years. Speaking of Scheffler, there was an interesting moment following a post-round interview at the year's first playoff event, in Memphis, earlier this month. On the course and off, no matter what story took prominence, McIlroy was there, the PGA Tour's universal soldier, turning up to win and lose in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

McIlroy needed to eagle 18, just as Young had done in the group ahead of him, to force a playoff with Smith. The trio combined to go 20 under in a memorable final round that saw McIlroy emerge victorious by making birdie on the final two holes to shoot 62. McIlroy missed a 20-footer for birdie on 14, long birdie putts on 15 and 16 and a 15-footer on the difficult 17th after Smith had executed a difficult two-putt from behind the Road Bunker. A second win north of the border came in similar fashion to his win in 2019, with an incredible final round to hold off a strong leaderboard. McIlroy started the final round of the 2019 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club tied for the lead with Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar. “It was one of the only Sunday evenings driving back from Augusta National where I've had a smile on my face.Rory McIlroy used a final round 64 to finish second at this year's Masters. “I obviously didn't get the win at Augusta, but I played a great final round,” McIlroy said. McIlroy started the final round of this year’s Masters 10 shots behind Scheffler. He was nine back after his opening hole and fell a shot farther behind with a bogey on the next hole. “To claw my way back and end up winning the tournament, incredible,” McIlroy said. The 30-footer for birdie on 15 in the TOUR Championship’s final round is fodder for highlight reels. Rory’s drive left was the result of a lingering swing issue he’d battled at various points last year. For the rest of us, too, making a big number early doesn’t present an opportunity to recover.
