Leicester City v Manchester United: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Will the Foxes escape the bottom of the table or can United continue their recent improvement? Join Rob Smyth.

A high-profile win against an improving but still eminently beatable Manchester United would reduce the noise and lift Leicester off the bottom of the table. At his best, he’s fine – I thought he was player of the match in the Europa League final, for example. They have had vile luck with injuries over the last couple of years, and their net spend since Rodgers took over in 2019 is among the lowest in the league. A year ago, Brendan Rodgers was the same odds as Erik ten Hag to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager. I know he’s not the best player in the world, I know he occasionally behaves like a 25-year-old, but I bloody love James Maddison. Eventually the ball was fed into Eriksen, who dummied to go across goal and then dragged a shot past the near post. 13 min “Rob,” says Rod Wooden, “never mind about Ronaldo being on the bench against Norwich, he would probably be only a substitute for Norwich at the moment. A transfer request when he was left out at home to Norwich? “I imagine he was a bit surprised that Champions League clubs were not lining up to get him.” Dalot collected a Leicester goalkick and flipped the ball down the right to Fernandes. 18 min Maddison is starting to impose his personality on the game. I’m sorry but it is really getting on my nerves and not so much the decisions but time which just shows incompetence.”

Leicester vs. Manchester United live score, updates, highlights from ... (Sporting News)

KING POWER STADIUM, LEICESTER — Although transfer deadline day is dominating the headlines, there is some football to be played tonight, too, as Leicester ...

20 mins to KO: The Red Devils are searching for a first win in six over Leicester. United strike as Rashford plays a nice short ball behind Leicester's last man and into the path of Sancho, who gets beyond Danny Ward and slots in coolly. 30th min: United are quite happy to keep possession now, with the scoreline giving Christian Eriksen a chance to start purring from his deep midfield position. Fernandes then plays in his compatriot for a third chance, but Ronaldo goes too wide and there are no teammates to meet his ball across the box. Ronaldo is of course up top, with Rashford moving to the left. HALF-TIME: Boos from a smattering of home fans as the players head down the tunnel. Moments later, the Brazilian made an interception in a dangerous area and then immediately played a great cross-field ball to Fernandes on the right flank. But that in itself will satisfy the Dutchman, who rode the rockiest of waves to start his United career, and has now enjoyed a memorable win over Liverpool to stem the tide and some plain sailing with back-to-back away victories. Ronaldo was surprisingly strong from the bench, too, crafting several opportunities to extend the lead, and being lively across the frontline. The Red Devils held on to end a run of five games against Leicester without a win, and ensure spirits are high ahead of Sunday’s huge home clash with league leaders Arsenal. United took their foot off the gas and controlled proceedings with comfort, as Leicester struggled to make any inroads. The former Borussia Dortmund star had began the game well, interchanging with Bruno Fernandes and each of United’s attacks seeming to flow through him.

Manchester United up to fifth after Jadon Sancho fires winner at ... (The Guardian)

Jadon Sancho's first-half goal gave Manchester United a 1-0 win that left Leicester bottom of the Premier League and booed off at the end.

Barnes did draw gasps after a curling effort out of nothing from 20 yards flashed over David de Gea’s upright but they came closest to equalising in the second half when James Maddison forced De Gea into a fine save from a free-kick. Leicester failed to make the ball stick and United feasted on their opponents’ dishevelment. “I know where the statement came from and I know it wasn’t Wesley Fofana,” he said. The galling thing for Rodgers was that it stemmed from Danny Ward booming a clearance upfield. More often than not programme notes amount to nothing more than empty platitudes but the Leicester chairman, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, used his to address some of the questions that have surrounded the club throughout a trying and destabilising summer in which Wout Faes, a £15m arrival from Reims, represented their only outfield signing. The performance was largely as gutsy as it was pretty but Jadon Sancho’s superbly taken first-half strike was enough to secure United successive away wins for the first time since last September.

That’s the reality. A chorus of boos echoed throughout the stadium as the full-time whistle sounded, and the Leicester fans continued to come to grips with the reality that they could be in a relegation scrap this season. Justin had time and space to steady himself as he lined up a shot, but ended up sending the attempt way off the target in the 93rd minute. Ronaldo had hoped to leave United before the transfer window shut on Thursday, but the Portugal star was unable to find a suitor willing to meet the club’s asking price and his desire to play in the Champions League. After winning the league in 2016, Leicester rose to prominence as one of the most competitive and feared clubs in English football. United moved up to fifth place and sit just one point adrift of the top four as Ten Hag begins to make an impact after a nightmare start to his reign.

Antony's arrival signals audacious upheaval of Manchester United (The Guardian)

Erik ten Hag's plan for major surgery in such a short time at Manchester United is both ambitious and flawed with Antony's arrival signalling the audacious ...

(It’s also worth remembering that he lost a child five months ago, and has every excuse to be distracted.) And yet the arrival of Antony is perhaps the clearest signal yet that Ten Hag is intending to build a team without him: quick, mobile, unpredictable and with multiple threats from multiple angles. This in itself is a quietly revolutionary development: junking the club’s star signing from a year ago after a season in which he scored 18 league goals. The expectation is that Antony, a left-footer, will slot in on the right, a long-standing problem position for United. This was a process that even Alex Ferguson took years rather than months to implement, seeking out not just winning talents but winning characters, players who would fight for each other, players who could play to a plan. He dribbles at speed, cuts inside for the cross or shot, presses with energy and “grinta”: an Italian term that Ten Hag loves to use for players with grit, guts, the will to fight and win at all costs. It is a trick that Pep Guardiola has often sought to deploy, and it serves a dual purpose. Having tried and failed to leave the club, Ronaldo has found himself on the bench ever since the Brentford game. All the red flags are present and correct, given what we know about United, and particularly United in the transfer market, and particularly United in the transfer market in the final week of the window after a bad start to the season. The sense of urgency and panic. The mechanics of Antony’s transfer are emblematic of United’s many dysfunctions. It brings Manchester United’s spending this window to about £200m plus potential add‑ons, and together with the signings of Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martínez means United are responsible for about 48% of the Eredivisie’s entire summer transfer income. It’s the 13th most expensive transfer of all time, slotting in between Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Ranking Manchester Uniteds 2022 Summer Transfer Window ... (Sports Illustrated)

Manchester United have made a number of new signings this summer - here we rank each one of the new additions.

[Casemiro](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/casemiro/profil/spieler/16306) joined United in one of the more ‘shock’ moves of the summer window. [even for the fee of around £50million](https://www.si.com/soccer/manchesterunited/news/manchester-united-announce-agreement-to-sign-casemiro-from-real-madrid). [Tyrell Malacia](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tyrell-malacia/profil/spieler/339340) could very well take the number one spot on this list as the best signing this summer. The Brazilian joins United at the age of 30, however still remains as one of the best in his position in the world. Eriksen has dictated the play for United in each game so far in his new role on the pitch and will be more than useful for United during his time at the club. [Christian Eriksen](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-eriksen/profil/spieler/69633) came in as a free signing and has been more than a welcome addition at United. [Lisandro Martinez](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lisandro-martinez/profil/spieler/480762) is another player that is only so high up in this list due to the fee. [Antony](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/antony/profil/spieler/602105) is only placed so high in this list due to the financial element as well as the boards incompetence on this deal. Martinez has been an incredible addition on the pitch and has already won United’s player player of the month award for August. Regardless, Antony as a player will be an exciting and needed addition to United’s squad - however the incompetence of United’s board have had a negative effect on this deal. In this article, I’ll be delving into ranking this summers signings, based on a number of factors such as the cost as well as the player itself and how they can benefit United. Hear from the boss as he chats about team news, the transfer window and the trip to Old Trafford.

That is the only reason why we are here, and we have to continue to do that. We have obviously tried to get everything done that we can, and sometimes you have to get the right balance. Yesterday it was a real possibility and we tried, but then we kept the decision to say that it has to be the right player for the team and for the club. I think we have learned a lot from that and there's still the players that we have to get out. We have gone through things like that when we hadn’t won at Stamford Bridge for 20 or something years, but you need to believe that you will do that. We have to go into the market and the other teams and coaches are going to tell you how good you are, what your value is and what you’ve done. The attitude of the player is there and he’s really disappointed to be out again as you can imagine, and the team needs him when he’s back. He called me really late last night and it was more of a conversation that we used to have when we were teammates and really good friends. There is nothing else we can do, we have an academy as well that we have to use, and we’ll try to utilise the players in the best possible way. Then we had to react in the market and we tried, but at the end of the day we have to bring in the player that we feel is right for the team and for the club and we didn’t manage to do that. I think that there have been moments when the history and the media were talking about it, and the special rivalry between certain players built a certain momentum into it. No, we had a lot of things still to do in the squad, you see the amount of departures, compared to the number we have recruited.
