Gillian Brookes is a flexible work specialist consultant. OPINION: Need a Father's Day gift idea? Open the door to flexible work, and let men walk through.
But, dads are now where the mums used to be (and still are). Some 79% of men and women have flexible hours and 74% of men have a working from home arrangement (compared with 75% of women). I’m not a dad, but from my perspective, giving dads explicit permission to participate in flexible work is where it begins. Only 5% of men have a part-time arrangement, compared to 11% of women. Making this appeal to a broader population to suit those in various situations could benefit many who want to give it a go, including dads. They aren’t yet making full use of, or feel they can access, their ideal flexible work options to manage their time and energy. According to the latest quarterly figures from Stats NZ, 35% of men in employment are working more than 40 hours per week (compared with 17% of women). Part-time work is so often a category (unofficially) reserved for mums returning after parental leave, which is incredibly limiting. Think of nurses, doctors, retail workers, hospitality and people in the building trades. They found that men were just as likely as anyone to be working flexibly, to some extent. As so many people now make use of this option, we’re at risk of thinking, “right, that’s flex sorted” and moving on. Flex discussions have all become about working from home.

Your generation has all the tools – and more importantly, the mindset – to make the world a better place, now and long into the future. I feel extremely fortunate to have found a career path that allows me to help other people to live more sustainably. Ten years ago, I became a dad and it made me conscious of how you see the world.
