Expressandstar.com brings you live coverage as Wolves face Southampton in the Premier League.
Wolves beat Southampton in a tight, tense clash at Molineux, as Bruno Lage's side grabbed their first win of the season, and first win in 13 PL games.
However, Kalajdzic was injured on his Wolves debut and came off at half time, while Jimenez was also injured in the warm-up and had to be withdrawn from the squad. They drew 0-0 at Bournemouth on Wednesday and the frustration of their players and manager was clear to see. As for Southampton, they’re full of confidence heading into this one and they’ve navigated a tough start to the season extremely well. There is a lot of negativity swirling around Wolves as Lage’s side dominate possession in games but just can’t put away chances and it appears to be more of a mental block that anything else. Southampton’s young side are very talented but there will be a few ups and downs this season, as they miss now make the most out of games against Brentford, Aston Villa and Everton to build on their strong start. Let’s see if Saints can now make the most of their unexpected fast start to the campaign. Che Adams will score that chance 99 times out of 100 and had Saints made it 1-1 with 30 minutes to go, surely another comeback win was on the cards. Watch out for Che Adams, who has been leading the line superbly. They now face Manchester City and Liverpool and some of the pressure is off Lage after their first win in 13 Premier League games. From Podence’s scuffed shot to Che Adams’ incredible error, Wolves dug deep and worked as hard as ever and they had the rub of the green. Matheus Nunes also produced a lovely assist and caused Saints plenty of problems with his clever runs and passing. Wolves don’t score a lot of goals (just three this season) and having their two main strikers out injured is far from ideal, but it sounds like both will be okay.
Wolverhampton Wanderers finally won their first Premier League game of the season after Daniel Podence scored the only goal against Southampton.
Podence was productive in possession and put in a shift out of it to help Ait-Nouri at the other end. He assisted Podence at the end of the first half and teed up Neto for good chances on a couple of occasions. He seemed certain to score on a couple of occasions, but Neto lacked a bit of quality when faced up by Bazunu. The Wolves captain gritted his teeth and put in a dogged performance in midfield. Wolves’ Spanish full-back was much improved on his showing at Bournemouth and almost scored a stunner in the second half. A smart foul on Walker-Peters in the second half halted a dangerous Southampton breakaway. Matheus was finally able to show Molineux his quality in a Premier League game. All eyes were on Kalajdzic in the box, but Podence nipped in behind the target man to put Wolves ahead in first half stoppage time. Neves wasn’t at his creative best in a game that was beyond scrappy at times. The ex-Birmingham City striker only needed to nod home into the empty Wolves goal after good work on the right from Aribo, but he somehow handled it instead. Matheus Nunes slid Neto in down the right but Wolves’ number seven dragged his shot wide with just Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to beat. The win finally ignites Wolves’ season and they are now out of the relegation zone.

But it’s frustrating to see the ball in the net and it’s not a goal.’ said Hasenhuttl. As the final whistle went, there were cheers from the South Bank as Lage took in the applause, raised his arms and bowed to the home support, who have stuck by their managers side, as evidenced by the chanting of his name both before and after the game. Che Adams missed a golden opportunity to level after Jose Sa could only parry Aribo’s cross but Adams mistimed his jump on virtually the goalline as his header struck his arm on the way in and the goal was disallowed. In the end, it took a rather fortuitous strike from the impressive Daniel Podence, alongside an array of missed Southampton chances to give the home side a hard-earned first win of the season. Lage was forced into a change with Kalajdzic’s debut ended prematurely after he went down holding his knee late in the first half. Podence could easily have squared it to Kalajdzic but instead scuffed his shot, yet to his relief and to the delight of the home support, Southampton keeper Gavin Bazunu had committed himself and the ball bobbled in.

Matheus Nunes also produced a lovely assist and caused Saints plenty of problems with his clever runs and passing. Sasa Kalajdzic ruled out; Raul Jimenez injured in warm-up: Worrying news for El Tri fans as Raul Jimenez was not only left out of Wolves’ starting lineup but he was then injured in the warm-up and pulled out of the squad altogether. The pressure on Bruno Lage eased thanks to Daniel Podence's goal in first-half stoppage time, as Wolves beat Southampton 1-0.
What I want is for my players to have big confidence to play our game because we didn’t start well but we have a team and time to still do well in the competition.” “Che knows this but he did a fantastic job working for the team. Adams then clipped the crossbar with another header from substitute Stuart Armstrong’s cross in the 63rd minute. Wolves captain Rúben Neves then denied Southampton the opening goal as he blocked Joe Aribo’s shot following Adams’ ball in from the right. The points can give us the confidence and, to be honest, it also came from the fans. But Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side were unable to follow up their midweek home win against Chelsea and slipped to their third league defeat of the season.
