Several studies have shown that traffic crash mortality can be reduced for rear occupants by approximately 55–75 per cent if they use safety belts.

They reached H N Reliance Foundation Hospital in the early hours this morning. In some cases, we have seen that the unbuckled passengers from the rear seats are also thrown out of the car in time of a collision,” said the expert. Explaining the injuries sustained during the accident, a forensic expert said as Mistry wasn’t wearing the seat belt, the collision might have thrown him forward, leading to a collision with the front seat or the dashboard which led to multiple fractures, especially on his head. The laboratory will also conduct tests for blood grouping and DNA analysis. Mistry’s viscera has been sent to the government-run Forensic State Laboratory (FSL), Kalina, for further examination. An independent survey released in January 2019 had recorded about 26,896 people having died in India due to the non-use of seat belts during the year 2017. Not wearing seatbelts results in the passengers being thrown frontwards when the car comes to a sudden halt resulting in injuries and fatalities. The car is also equipped with a “pre-safe” feature, whereby the front seat belts can be electrically pretensioned in hazardous situations. Whether the passengers in the rear were wearing seat-belts isn’t known. Speaking to [The Indian Express](https://indianexpress.com), one of the experts engaged in the exercise said that the stretch in question did not appear to have a system to enforce speed restriction, which it should have had. “Currently, it (the site) is not a designated black spot.

With a simple click of the seat belt indicating it getting fastened securely, each of us works towards ensuring our own safety as well as that of fellow passengers. A combination of these is required for the prevention of road crash deaths and injuries being witnessed in record numbers in recent times. For the authorities to prevent such unnecessary injuries and deaths, it is imperative to ensure strict enforcement of rear seat belt usage. In that sense, the usage of the rear seat belts suffers both from lack of adequate information as well as strong enforcement. In a vehicle travelling at 100 km/ hr, a rear seat passenger weighing about 80 kg and not secured with the help of a seat belt, is hurtled at an enormous force of 30,864 Joules in the event of a road crash. The latter deals with the causes leading to the subsequent injuries and deaths mostly in the realm of infrastructural and vehicle safety issues.

This resulted in a legal tussle a few months later, going from the NCLT to the Supreme Court of India. Mistry’s ouster from the Tata Group has been called a ‘palace coup’ by many in the industry. Mistry, despite his reserved nature, pulled no punches when it came to steering the Tata Group’s future. When Mistry entered his family business in 1991, Ratan Tata was elevated as the group chairman by his uncle, JRD Tata. He was subsequently elevated as the deputy chairman of the Tata Group. Since then, the Pallonjis have remained quiet partners in the Tata Group. The SP Group’s stake increased to 18.5% after a rights issue in 1996. Mistry was the chairman of the Tata Group for four years, from 2012 to 2016. Mistry was otherwise a very reclusive, private person, and not much is out in the public about his life. Wearing a seat belt gives you a much greater chance of being conscious and able-bodied.” In fact, Dhawan has himself been conducting awareness campaigns on seat belt discipline and is appalled by how despite mandatory provisions in the Motor Vehicle Act, rear seat belt use is minimal among Indians. “The law is never enforced when it comes to wearing the belt in the rear seat. Its Department of Transportation has conducted studies that indicate of the 23,824 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2020, 51 per cent were not wearing seat belts — a four per cent increase from 2019. And we need to make wearing seat belts a behavioural habit, no matter what the seat, from as young as five years old. The incident is also a reminder that no lessons have been learnt since the death of Princess Diana, who succumbed to injuries in exactly identical circumstances and was not wearing a seat belt. The seat belt also contains spinal injuries, which can lead to death or loss of organs.” As per the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, wearing seat belts reduces one’s risk of suffering injuries or death by about half. The most common mistake we make is to place the top belt near our necks and the bottom across our hips, leaving the crucial torso unprotected. The rear seat passenger can hit the front seat passenger and driver and injure them seriously. “This is the most common myth. You would be thrown forward with such speed that you would hit the front row and even the dashboard hard.
