To open the fourth quarter, he made the perfect read and threw to Gabe Davis one-on-one for a big gain. The Bills had seven sacks in the game, and that just scratches the surface of the impact of the defensive line. The Bills got a lot of receivers involved from the start, making it to seven pass-catchers very early. He finished 26-of-31 for 292 yards and three passing TDs along with leading the team in rushing—rushing nine times for 57 yards and the aforementioned TD. A multitude of Bills recorded their first sacks of the season Thursday night; Von Miller (2), Jordan Phillips and A.J. At least one sure-fire Rams first down was stopped by a great pressure and Jordan Poyer’s interception was at least partially due to a great A.J. With that in mind, here are my takeaways from the 1-0 start for the Bills.

Coach Bill Belichick is instead going with the not-so-terrifying twosome of [Matt Patricia and Joe Judge](https://apnews.com/article/carolina-panthers-new-england-patriots-york-giants-nfl-sports-f5014266ecee7514913c48502152d04b), who both went from former Patriots assistants to notoriously short-lived head coaches and back to assistants in New England. [Tyreek Hill](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/03/23/tyreek-hill-trade-dolphins/?itid=lk_inline_manual_27). [traded to Denver](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/03/08/russell-wilson-trade/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12) and just got [a massive contract extension](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/09/01/russell-wilson-denver-broncos-extension/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12) that includes $165 million in guaranteed money. [not to mention his team in general](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/09/05/odds-to-win-the-super-bowl/?itid=lk_inline_manual_20), and the excitement is warranted. [let Russ cook](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/09/18/russell-wilson-let-russ-cook/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13). Getting explosive running back Travis Etienne, a former teammate at Clemson, back from a rookie-season-obliterating [injury](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/08/24/jaguars-urban-meyer-travis-etienne-james-robinson/?itid=lk_inline_manual_43) should help, though. The former BYU star can blame a major jump up in competition last year, as well as injuries to him and his primary pass-catchers, for a rough rookie season, but the fact is he was alarmingly bad. Uzomah, Tyler Conklin) and a third-round pick (Ohio State’s Jeremy Ruckert).

This year, the team and its quarterback, Lamar Jackson, in a contract year, have a lot to prove. Surprisingly, 91 percent of the money bet on this game has come in on the Texans. Last season the Broncos lost a lot of close games, and Wilson seems like the missing piece to correct that trend. This game opened +4 and is now sitting at +2.5 after 90 percent of the money came in on the Jaguars. Detroit finished a terrible 2021 season with a 3-13-1 record, but the team was surprisingly one of the best against the spread at 11-6. The Steelers have had offensive line issues in the preseason, but the Bengals have only one of their offensive line starters returning from last season. In a battle of defenses, the Steelers should have an advantage in 2021’s defensive player of the year, T.J. The Bears had one of the worst defenses in the league last season and were 0-5 as home underdogs last season, including a loss to San Francisco. Perhaps that explains why only 29 percent of bets are on the Bears but 65 percent of the money is. The 7.5-point spread is the second biggest of the week. [The Packers lost their last season-opener in a 38-3 blowout to the Saints](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/12/sports/football/week-1-packers-saints-aaron-rodgers.html). The spread is only 2 points, presaging a continuation of Minnesota’s streak of nail-biters and heartbreakers.

"Just trying to make a play for the team, just doing what I can do to try to get first down," Allen said of the stiff-arm. Allen also led the Bills in rushing, generating 56 yards on 10 carries with a TD. But again, when I'm called upon to do something for my team, I'm willing to do it." That's just, I guess, an example of what I'm willing to do to win a game and just try to get a first down and allow us to keep moving the ball.

For one night, the Buffalo Bills played up to the weighty expectations many had hung on them this offseason.

It’s a rematch from last season, when Allen was stopped near the goal line in the final seconds of a 90% — The Bills set a franchise record in converting nine of 10 third-down opportunities since the statistic began being tracked in 1973. Perhaps, it was payback after Ramsey, while playing for Jacksonville, once referred to Allen as “trash” after the Bills selected the quarterback in the first round of the 2018 draft. The Bills are back on prime-time for their home opener against Tennessee on Sept. Not much needs adjusting, except someone reminding Allen and/or Dorsey to limit the number of quarterback runs especially with Buffalo leading by 21 in the final quarter. As the NFL’s active leader in sacks, Miller’s stock was never down.

Mahomes is the highest-priced QB on the slate, and he's also playing in the game with the highest implied total of the week on SISB (54). a Jets team that surrendered the fourth most passing yards, the fourth most rushing yards and the most rushing touchdowns to opposing teams in 2021.

The Ravens have averaged 38.2 points in their past five season openers and have easily covered spreads of at least seven points in three of them. The Ravens have a tight end-centric passing game, and the Jets’ defense ranked 31st in pass defense DVOA versus tight ends last season. They allowed an average of 14.3 points per game and turned the ball over just once. They lost two of those games by three points each and won the other. The Cowboys have talent, but there’s a reason Tampa Bay is a road favorite. When the Cowboys played the Bucs last season, Smith didn’t allow a single pressure. This game should be close, as the line suggests, and Rodgers and a proven Packers defense should get the edge. This isn’t a bet against the Vikings as much as it is on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Week 1 can be challenging to prognosticate — new players, new coaches, new schemes, new injuries.

The Chiefs have more questions than they have in a while thanks to the departure of Tyreek Hill. Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ offense is in rough shape. The Giants are also getting tons of sharp support at the moment. Jacoby Brissett isn’t a world-beater, but he’s proven to be a capable game manager in the past. Daniel Jones may not be the same caliber of player as Allen, but he does have a few things working for him. The Chiefs initially opened as three-point favorites, and bettors have been absolutely teeing off on this line. He also has a host of intriguing playmakers to lean on. This might be my favorite game of the week. They nearly won the Super Bowl last season, and Joe Burrow is a trendy MVP pick in his third NFL season. The defense is also expected to be terrible, and first-round pick Drake London isn’t even a lock to play. However, it’s important to remember that things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows for the Bengals last year. Kyle Pitts is legitimately the only player on the entire roster to be excited about.

Football is back, and so are survivor pools! Here are our safe bets, under-the-radar picks and games to avoid for Week 1 of the NFL season.

If you're not buying the Eagles as a legitimate NFC contender, they should be your Week 1 pick. The ideal scenario is finding a club that you feel is good enough to handle its business this weekend but not good enough to be a favorite to win on a weekly basis. Expect a steady diet of Derrick Henry as the Titans roll to a Week 1 win. But they're still good enough to beat the Lions, who despite all of Dan Campbell's bluster have one of the NFL's least talented rosters. Those stops might be hard to come by Sunday in Los Angeles against Justin Herbert and a loaded Chargers offense. Fun fact: The Giants haven't won a road game in regulation since Dec. But let's be honest: The Jets aren't winning this game. Sure, you could pick Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, and you'll probably advance to Week 2. But since you can't pick the Chiefs again, your options will be more limited going forward.
