Norway's Casper Ruud Reaches U.S. Open Final, Can Earn World ... (Forbes)

Sometimes one point can change the tone of an entire tennis match. That looked to be the case when Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov engaged in a 55-ball ...

“I think basically in Norway you play a lot on clay in the summer, and his game style suits maybe clay better,” he said. The more you play on hard court, the more confident you get. “So it was never like he cannot play on hard court, because we play on hard court during the winter. Ruud would be the fourth and the first from Norway. He closed it out at love on his serve, hitting a nifty forehand drop shot on match point, with the crowd soon shouting “Ruud.” The way the first set ended surely took an emotional toll on Khachanov, who took out Nick Kyrgios in a rugged five-set quarterfinal to reach his first-ever Slam semi. This is a Grand Slam the last 18 or 19 years that had more winners than the rest of them, because I'm not sure why, but there is something special I guess with this place. If Alcaraz wins, he and Ruud will play for the No. In Sunday’s final, Ruud will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. Ruud is seeking to become the third straight man to win his first major at the U.S. The point, and the title, were won by Borg, one of three Scandinavians — along with fellow Swedes Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg — to hold world No. 5 seed from Norway, went on to win the match over the Russian, 7-6(5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to advance to his second Grand Slam final.

Casper Ruud books place in US Open final by battling past Karen ... (The Guardian)

Casper Ruud beat Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 5-7 6-2 in the US Open semi-final to make his second grand slam final of the season.

With hard work, humility and a cool head, Ruud will continue to be in the frame. Consistency won out as Ruud took the tiebreak 7-5 with the longest rally of the tournament, refusing to miss and scampering around the court in defence. Khachanov served well throughout the set and the pressure grew until Ruud’s nerves finally betrayed him at 5-6 as he dumped a forehand into the net on set point. By reaching the final Ruud, the fifth seed, has put himself on the verge of achieving the two ultimate achievements in the sport at once. Despite the pressure of being the favourite in a grand slam semi-final Ruud remained steady through his early nerves and gradually ground down Karen Khachanov, the 27th seed, as he became the first Norwegian man to reach a US Open final, winning 7-6(5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. He had heard all of the criticisms of his abilities on the surface loud and clear, the way that people questioned and underestimated him, but he took them with a smile.

“I think what's most fair is if we both reach the final and whoever wins the final reaches the World No. Although Khachanov battled hard, the lengthy rally put him in too deep of a hole. The next-longest rally of the event came between Could stretch my arms in the air and win the first set. That would be I think the ideal situation,” Ruud said. “I missed a serve by small margins the first serve. “That's fun with tennis because some of the best rallies of all time, longer rallies of all times, often come in important points because we both realise how important it is. I knew this [was] a chance to win the first set. The 55-shot rally not only earned Ruud the set, but gave him a heavy dose of momentum leading into the set set, which he claimed 6-2. “It was a very important point in the match. Neither man took control of the point until Ruud unleashed a backhand up the line that Khachanov missed into the net. One point might have made all the difference.

What Makes Casper Ruud a Worthy Opponent in the US Open Final (The New York Times)

Ruud, the No. 5 seed, has already played in one Grand Slam final this year.

“He can rip a winner.” “At least I know a little bit what I’m facing when I’m stepping on the court, seeing the trophy on the back of the court, seeing tons of celebrities,” Ruud said. That was a little bit of a new experience for me. Carlos and Frances are both very electric players, play with a lot of joy and can bring up unbelievable rallies and points. “He improved his backhand as well. Ruud’s forehand served him well in his Friday semifinal against Karen Khachanov of Russia, which he won, 7-6(5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

But once I’m at home with my family, my friends and the people I have known since I was little, I feel like a 19-year-old kid.” Alcaraz likes to take big cuts and hit the ball very early, and the true bounce of a hardcourt allows him more precision. Alcaraz is at his most dangerous and entertaining when he is on the scramble. But Nadal and Djokovic have missed big chunks of this season (and Nadal missed the last few months of 2021 as well). One more match awaits, and the final against Ruud, a 23-year-old Norwegian, will not only be a duel for the U.S. It will also be a match for the No. [Against Tiafoe in the semifinals](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/09/sports/tennis/carlos-alcaraz-outlasts-frances-tiafoe-to-reach-us-open-final.html), Alcaraz came up with lunging angles, forehand passing shots off balls that seemed already out of reach, and produced topspin lobs from deeply compromised positions that landed beyond Tiafoe’s reach directly on the baseline. He has worked the same kind of magic with a majority of the crowd against him, as it was on Friday night when he played Frances Tiafoe. He has done it with the crowd of nearly 24,000 in Arthur Ashe Stadium supporting him, saving a match point against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals. Open, the evidence is overwhelming now after his bewitching run to the men’s singles final, in which he will face Casper Ruud on Sunday. 1, and whoever wins will rise to the top spot for the first time.

The obstacles for Ruud are clearly numerous. Despite reaching his second grand slam final of the season, Ruud has never beaten a top-10 opponent at a grand slam ...

Here he is at 19 years old, fighting to become the youngest world No 1 in the history of the ATP tour and the second-youngest US Open champion, after Pete Sampras. In each of his three five-set matches against Marin Cilic, Jannik Sinner and Tiafoe, he has had clear and numerous opportunities to finish with far less toil, and it is partly his wastefulness that has forced him to be so resilient. Both players will have to handle the greatest occasion of their career, and all the nerves that could easily strike them as they seek it out. It is rare enough for players to reach the world summit for the first time after winning a slam. Not only will Ruud and Alcaraz compete for their first grand slam title in the final, but the world No 1 ranking is also on the line. It will make him so hard to put away as he faces Casper Ruud for the men’s US Open title on Sunday.
