LIVE NRL: Sharks 'match fire with fire' in frantic 'shootout' with Cowboys.

“That is not out of the box for Val. TO COME . It was incredible.” “He is clutch. They get a week off and they have a preliminary final up in Townsville. The physicality. We have seen him do that three or four times. “To have somebody with the clutch play in the form that he is in Valentine Holmes to come up with that play is enormous,” Parker said. “That was so enjoyable. “It travels 40 metres. Holmes slotted a 45-metre two-point field goal to send the Cowboys to the preliminary final after 93 minutes of epic rugby league. The Cowboys have beaten the Sharks 32-30 after Valentine Holmes slotted a long-range field goal after two periods of extra time to seal a golden point epic for the ages.

And then Asofa-Solomona's effort put the home side ahead but it was short-lived with the Raiders finishing with a flourish to send the Storm packing. Coates planted the ball across the line for his third try four minutes into the second half after a break by Marion Seve for the Storm to only trail by two points. Two tries to Coates put his side ahead 8-4 but the Raiders crossed twice in the final nine minutes of the half to take an eight-point lead into the break. The Raiders repelled a Storm fight-back in the second half to oust the perennial finals heavyweights and march on to a semi-final showdown against Parramatta in Sydney next weekend. His kick set up Tom Gilbert for the opening try of the night with Peta Hiku and Tom Dearden also scoring to help the Cowboys get away to a fast start. The winner of the semifinal between Parramatta and Canberra is the only hurdle remaining between them and a place in the grand final.

The Cowboys are now just one win away from a grand final and will enjoy a week off before hosting a preliminary final in Townsville. the thing that probably disappoints us the most is we scored 30 points and the way we defended throughout the season we would probably get that done nine times out of 10 so we have a simple focus in front of us, we’re back to work tomorrow and get prepared for next week." Val had a carry in that same set in our own half and he got up and said to the boys as he got up and played the ball and they were running off he said 'I'm taking a shot' and that's what happened and he was dialled in and he delivered." We earned a second crack so the disappointment is here right now but we’re on again next week so we just have to dust it off… Nicho Hynes entered the finals series with 17 try assists for the season and he needed just 25 minutes to notch No.18 when he put Siosifa Talakai into a gaping hole to score the Sharks' second of the night. What’s done is done now, we just have to wash it and move on.

"So I think he was just banking on Val getting the ball in his hands and trying to knock it free or even trying to hold him up. he was sort of blinded of when Val Holmes was going to take control of that football," Smith said. "The fact is he goes into Valentine Holmes and uses his body to push him." "The ref and the Bunker are put in a very tough situation there. "Connor Tracey did his best to actually look like he was going for the ball, and he was getting his arm around Valentine Holmes," Fittler said. "I felt like he was going a bit both ways. Valentine Holmes the hero as Cowboys hunt down Sharks to win ... (The Guardian)

North Queensland beat Cronulla 31-30 in extra-time to send the Cowboys through to the preliminary final.

The thing that probably disappoints us the most is we scored 30 points and the way we defended throughout the season we would probably get that done nine times out of 10. Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi scored the first try after the break but Holmes was unable to add the extras from the touchline. But then the game took a twist. The win guarantees the Cowboys will host a preliminary final in Townsville for the first time. Hynes was faultless from the tee converting tries from Toby Rudolf, Siosifa Talakai and Will Kennedy. Chad Townsend was key to the Cowboys’ fortunes as he returned to play his former club for the first time since leaving for Townsville last year.

He added: “The NRL has been a bit cheeky by continually asking the State Government for more and more funding for stadiums. I can understand why they would want the home ground advantage. It makes the #NRL look like a schoolboy comp when 90K go to the MCG and one side is from WA!” They have a couple of beautiful stadiums and they are rarely being used — surely if you are going to erect something like that in your city, you need to the best bang for the buck out of it. I know Shark Park is being reno’d and that's why the crowd is small. I also know it’s embarrassing to play a finals game where only 12500 people can squeeze in.
