That is a dreadful shot from Mulder, regardless of the context of the game. Anderson comes back into the attack and starts with a maiden to Jansen. What a session for England as they ripped out the South African top order. The final ball of the first over of the session kicks enough off a back of a length and takes the shoulder of Zondo’s blade. Jansen is takes three runs – first with a couple through cover and another down the ground – before Maharaj scampers a single to get off the mark with a cheekily scampered run. Jansen is more circumspect and is able to ride the bounce with more comfort. 35th over: South Africa 110-9 (Rabada 6, Nortje 0) Rabada’s gentle and well timed flick through midwcket for three suggested that the remaining Saffas might concentrate and drag out as many runs as they can. The South African’s half heartedly go up for a catch at backward point but the TV replay shows Crawley thunked it into the ground first. 2nd over: England 10-0 (Lees 6, Crawley 4) Marco Jansen (the missing lovechild of Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alan Mullally?) is going to send down his south-paw slingers from the other end. Sun out at The Oval and a very appreciative crowd, cheering every run and oohing and ahhhing almost every ball. 8th over: England 35-1 (Crawley 5, Pope 16) Shot! 10th over: England 44-2 (Pope 22, Root 1) Joe Root does his road runner thing as he scampers out onto the field, legs pumping like a pistons.

Zondo gets off the mark in his second Test with a poke through point for a single. Broad pins Zondo with the final ball of the over and, to his credit, he seems the most reluctant to send it upstairs. A seventh over for Robinson, which may be his last, however hungry he will be for another 5Wi. Anderson tightens his line and Zondo works it away square for a single. The next ball is shorter and Jansen fiddles it off his hip for a single. Anderson carries on for the final over before lunch on an incident-rich morning for England. Broad lured Jansen on to the rocks of a drive and he got quite a chunk of it but Foakes spilled it to his right. Robinson returns and Jansen drives straight past him for two, the bowler pitching it up. Heart in mouth moment for Maharaj who leaves on line and the ball zips back from outside off and clears middle and leg by barely an inch. Left-arm quick, over the wicket, Jansen ducks it back in to Lees through the gate as the opener tried to press it through mid on with a tight grip. Maharaj throws the bat into a cut and scythes it through point for four. Maharaj rotates through a pull above the ball when Broad bangs one in and ducks another bouncer.

England vs South Africa third Test | Ollie Robinson strikes as South ... (The Hindu)

With opening day washed out and no play on Friday, concerns had been expressed as to whether game could be completed inside three days.

Only two Proteas batsmen made it past 20, recalled fast bowler Marco Jansen top-scoring with 30 and Khaya Zondo, in his first Test innings, making 23. Robinson took 5-49 in 14 overs, with veteran quick Stuart Broad returning figures of 4-41 in 12.3 overs as a match delayed by Thursday’s total washout and Friday’s abandonment due to the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, finally started on the third day of a scheduled five. Ollie Robinson returned the best figures of his England career as South Africa were dismissed for just 118 in the third and deciding Test at the Oval on Saturday.

One reckons they've let the visitors off the hook, especially after having been the beneficiaries of the best conditions, both with bat and ball. This was after an emotional start to the Test, filled with tributes to the late queen and rendering 'God save the King', for the first time on the cricket field since 1952. It was the day of the Ollies - Robinson took five wickets and then Pope made 67, but England strangely felt that attack was the best form of defence, even failing to recognize that the pitch was easing up and they'd enough time to try and bat the visitors out. "To walk down those stairs, every single player commented on how special it was to walk down: You could hear a pin drop. Ben Stokes came and went quickly with the ultra-attacking approach we have become accustomed to not paying off on this occasion. Despite the frustrations of the fans, that proved to be it for day three and Foakes (11no) and Robinson (3no) will resume on Sunday morning as England try to build a more substantial lead. Root came out to join Ollie Pope, who was batting with all the confidence of a man who averaged 88.54 on his home ground, and for a time the pair seemed to go shot for shot as the home crowd roared their approval. It was left to Broad to wrap up the innings with the wickets of Keshav Maharaj (18) and Anrich Nortje (7). With plans to honour the Queen prior to the start of play, the vast majority of a capacity crowd were in their seats early and a hush fell over the ground as a military guard of honour was formed.

Together with Jansen, he doubled the score from 36-6 to 72-7. “He is a hero of mine,” Broad told Sky Sports after stumps. And when star batsman Root, chasing a wide Jansen delivery, was brilliantly caught by Keegan Petersen at third slip for 23, England were 84-3 in the first over after tea. Zondo, however, was out for 23 in the first over after lunch, fending at a lifting Broad delivery before the seamer had Jansen caught by Joe Root at first slip. But South Africa thrashed England by an innings and 12 runs at Lord’s inside three days before the hosts were as quick as they won the second Test in Manchester by an innings and 85 runs. Left-arm quick Marco Jansen, who had top-scored for the Proteas with 30 after he was unluckily left out of the second Test, took the first four England wickets to fall in a return of 4-34 in 11 overs.

England v South Africa: live score and latest updates from day 4 (Telegraph.co.uk)

A change at last, Stokes gives Jimmy a breather and brings himself on.

After day one was lost to rain, and day two cancelled out of a mark of respect for the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the match began yesterday. All eyes will be on Foakes then as he tries to shepherd the team to something like a total. Tall left armer, gets it to angle in to the right handed bat, gets bounce and swing. Another good ball later in the over leaves the batsman, Elgar hopping and popping at the ball. Off the fourth ball, Foakes tucks Rabada off the hip for a single. Erwee shovels the second delivery away to leg for a welcome two runs that spares him the pair. They needed just 13 minutes to get rid of the last three England wickets, and have now dug in sensibly to reach 70 for just the lost of opener Erwee. He told Sky at the weekend: "He is a hero of mine. Third ball of the over, Broad jags one back and traps Elgar on the crease. Amazing how green the Oval square is at the end of a dry summer... Broad, perhaps tiring a little as he is in the 8th over of this spell, with a short ball. Half-powered ball form Broad completes the over, a diffident whiff at it from Mulder, and a half-hearted appeal that is soon quashed.

His eventful start to the innings was completed with an unsuccessful South Africa review for a catch after the ball ballooned into the cordon. It's a pleasure to bowl with him at the other end." A fierce pull shot was put down by Rickelton at mid-wicket and later in the over, an outside edge flew between wicketkeeper and first slip. Meanwhile, Stokes was battling through knee pain in a fine spell from the other end and looked to have earned his reward when Jansen nicked an out-swinger to Pope. England bowler Jimmy Anderson: "Great day for us, I thought we bowled really well, and we didn't get the rewards in the first session. A hooping in-swinger beat Jansen (4) on the inside edge and flattened leg stump. Stokes brought himself into the attack and needed just three balls to find Erwee's edge with Joe Root taking a good catch at first slip. And swing, the ball did. Zak Crawley guides England to verge of series win against South ... (The Guardian)

Zak Crawley and Alex Lees put on an unbeaten opening partnership of 97 but bad light stopped play at end of day four with England needing 33 to win.

At the other end Stokes was back pounding away, mindful of not releasing the pressure in a match where his spinner, Jack Leach, had been relegated to the role of second gravedigger. As such, when Robinson continued his barnstorming Test match by removing both set men in the space of five balls with inswingers that nipped in further, the tourists had gone nowhere. Given a batting line-up otherwise green by way of experience, Elgar should probably have taken one regardless; instead he was back in the sheds when the replay showed it was missing. Six hours earlier England’s mood was not nearly so buoyant and in a summer where the quality of Dukes ball has been a running theme, they were chuntering about the latest one at their disposal. South African shoulders had dropped, not least after Marco Jansen grassed Lees at slip off the first ball of the chase, but this was still a huge boon for both openers. It follows the second evening in a row where the players were forced off early and this time, at 6.37pm, boos rang around the Oval.

Predictably it was Stokes who stepped up to change the direction of the match, removing Sarel Erwee before lunch and reinstalling that almost unearned sense of belief that this was a Test match that England were winning by the close. It always helps to have a slice of luck to go with your confidence and England were granted that after lunch, Dean Elgar’s curious decision not to review when given out LBW – to a ball later revealed to be missing the stumps considerably – certainly tipped things in England’s favour. England were in truth fairly diabolical from around the Tea break yesterday until shortly before lunch today – on Day Three they blundered from 84/2 to 154/7 by the close, and followed that up with the loss of their final three wickets for just four runs inside the first 15 minutes of Day Four. England have been a side reborn under Brendon McCullum and the captaincy of Ben Stokes, instilled with the confidence and bravado as they are on the verge of winning six out of seven Tests this summer. For all the Bazball jokes and eye-rolling worldwide, England have been a side reborn under Brendon McCullum and the captaincy of Ben Stokes, instilled with the confidence and bravado that their skipper can’t help but emanate every time he steps out on a cricket field.

Brendon McCullum's England on the brink of another series win ... (Stuff.co.nz)

After South Africa collapsed from 83-1 to 169 all out in its second innings, with three wickets apiece for Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes, Alex Lees was dropped ...

Stokes then produced a devilish inswinger through the gate as South Africa lost their sixth wicket of the session. Anderson found the edge of Keegan Petersen for 23. In his first over he angled one across Sarel Erwee, who departed for 26 after a tentative push was taken low at first slip. Broad and Anderson returned to claim a wicket each as South Africa subsided with a notional 35 overs left on Sunday (Monday NZT) as England ended the day how they started it: by batting. * Zak Crawley ended a streak of 16 innings without a half century to put Brendon McCullum’s resurgent England on the brink of a test series victory over South Africa at the Oval on Sunday (Monday NZT).
