A public holiday to honour the death of Queen Elizabeth II will be too expensive for small businesses to cope with, ACT leader David Seymour says.

“They know this in advance and do not take bookings for those days. “New Zealanders are feeling the loss of the Queen, she was a true leader who selflessly served the Commonwealth every day of her life. She said Matariki being on a Friday rather than a Monday was “truly awful” for the industry and it would be “heartbreaking” to pay out for another public holiday. If she was to open for the day, she had to pay staff time-and-a-half and give them a paid day in lieu meaning a kitchen hand on $25 an hour got an hourly rate of $62.50, while a sous chef would be $75 an hour. The Government should be asking itself, though, is it fair to put another $450m of costs on to business in the middle of a cost of living crisis? It was revealed on Monday that New Zealanders will be given a day off on September 26, to coincide with a memorial service at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, a cathedral for which the late Queen laid the foundation stone for in 1954.

QE II memorial day set for Sept 26 (Interest.co.nz)

PM announces one-day public holiday to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's passing on Monday, Sept 26, same as South Canterbury anniversary day.

I am a small business owner who will be taking a hit for this public holiday. Waits for all the folk that watched the funeral to call in sick...and get a long weekend...not very onto it are they? Okay it is a one-off and the Queen was much loved but just give everyone a break from days off! And it sure as eggs wont be the owners. 95% of businesses in nz are smbs and are suffering from the same inflation ads everyone else. You can make your point without the personal insult. [Edited to remove the unnecessary smear. Whether or not people use the day for reflection is irrelevant. If its that important to you... You'll probably have to determine if its an 'otherwise working' day. Ardern will represent New Zealand, alongside the Governor General Cindy Kiro, at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London next Monday. “I know many people will want the opportunity to pay their respects and the public holiday offers communities around the country the ability to come together and pay tribute at local events also.
