South Canterbury district councils release details of community poll about whether they support moving the region's Anniversary Day.
The future of the CBD is under consideration, there are large-scale building projects under way at Showgrounds Hill and the rebuild of Scott Base will soon commence. A separate Stuff poll that has been running since shortly after the announcement on Monday is overwhelming in favour of an extra public holiday date. It's all on in Timaru. “The legislation dictates that only one public holiday occurs at that time, we have asked MBIE [Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment] to reach out to the local leadership in South Canterbury because they do have the ability, should they choose, to move or celebrate their day on another day.” [News of the clash of dates drew a mixed reaction](https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/129859400/councils-to-decide-whether-to-move-south-canterbury-anniversary-holiday-due-to-clash-with-queen-elizabeth-ii-memorial-day) in South Canterbury on Monday. "South Canterbury residents will be asked if they support moving South Canterbury Anniversary Day to align with Canterbury Anniversary day on November 11 or not," the Timaru District Council's communications manager Stephen Doran said in a media release.

It's all on in Timaru. “They recognise the need to mourn and honour the service of the Queen, but question the need for a public holiday that they will once again be meeting the costs of.” The three councils are expected to make a decision on whether to move the anniversary public holiday at meetings on Tuesday. “It is a one-off, it isn’t going to impact the South Canterbury Anniversary Day in the future.” Smith said some were “concerned that this is a day that traditionally attracts Cantabrians to the Timaru District to shop, dine out and visit.” He said it made sense to align the holidays from a business-sense, and for the fact many South Cantabrians often took that day off work to attend the Canterbury Show. “It gives us the catalyst to actually consider a change in when we celebrate our anniversary day.” “There does have to be a decision – that needed to be had in a reasonably short time frame. On Monday, South Canterbury’s three mayors met to discuss moving the anniversary after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was up to “local leaders” to decide whether to do so following a clash with the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day public holiday. There is a call to consider permanently moving South Canterbury’s anniversary day to coincide with that of Canterbury, but not everyone supports the move.
