Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham LIVE commentary: Spurs face 'Leoes ... (talkSPORT.com)

Tottenham return to action against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday following the Premier League's postponement.Spurs have confirm.

- Sporting conceded 11 home goals in the UEFA Champions League last season, the most they’ve ever shipped on home soil in a season in major European football. - Tottenham Hotspur last faced Portuguese opponents in August 2021, winning 3-1 on aggregate against Paços de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League qualifying phases. - Richarlison scored a brace on his UEFA Champions League debut for Tottenham in their 2-0 win over Marseille. They’ve lost on MD2 in their two most recent campaigns, 1-0 defeats to Barcelona (2017-18) and Borussia Indeed, Sporting CP suffered more high turnovers against (18) than any other side in the first round of this season’s UEFA Champions League. I’m sure it [his brace in the last game] meant a lot to him.

Sporting CP vs. Tottenham Hotspur Champions League Preview: A ... (Cartilage Free Captain)

Spurs have the rare opportunity for back-to-back Champions League victories without any match in between.

Winning on the road is always tough in the Champions League, but coming home with six points through two matches would be an excellent place to be. Sporting is not exactly dominating domestically, with a modest 3-1-2 start in the league including a 0-3 loss to Porto. The Spurs academy product joined Sporting in the winter and has been a consistent presence in the lineup. This is a bit of a unique situation as Tottenham’s trip to Manchester was called off over the weekend, leaving the club with consecutive Champions League fixtures without anything in between. Antonio Conte has the luxury of four great attackers but the challenge of figuring out how to best deploy them. With all of the fixture congestion that lies ahead, having that strong start would be a huge benefit in the future.

Spurs have started on the front foot and Son wins a corner on the left-hand side. Conte has stuck with 10 of the 11 that beat Marseille, with Davies in for Lenglet on the left of the back three the only change. 35th minute: Nuno has had a lively half down the Sporting left and he forces Davies to clear for a throw-in. 4th minute: Dicey stuff at the back there from Sporting and Son could be in. 24th minute: Kane looks for Richarlison and finds him as Reis loses his footing trying to cut out the lofted pass. Wingback Emerson is the man arriving and his header forces a save from Adan. 48th minute: Kane gets down the left channel and delivers a quality cross. Son is the latest player to enjoy a chance thanks to Kane's ingenuity. 74th minute: Emerson plops a useless cross into Adan's arms and Conte is demanding answers on the touchline. But when the 23-year-old left Tottenham defenders trailing in his wake in Lisbon, it was easy to remember those quotes and think Pochettino might have had a point. Kane was the provider for Spurs’ best two chances of the match early in the second half, with a left-wing cross and a quick free-kick picking out Emerson Royal. 56 min: A little bit of time and space for Edwards to the left of the D. 45 min +1: Edwards picks up the ball to the right of the centre circle, his back to goal. [Sporting](https://www.theguardian.com/football/sporting-lisbon) box from the left wing. With Son in space in the middle, he opts to shoot across Adan and towards the top right instead. 58 min: Richarlison sashays in from the right and goes for the low curler towards the bottom left. The ball pings back off Reis and into the keeper’s arms. 69 min: Edwards skedaddles down the left and fizzes a low ball into the Spurs six-yard box. Emerson swings a cross in from the right. Porro swings the free kick in from the right, and it’s a doddle for Lloris. Easy for Lloris in the end, but Spurs were a little out of formation there. 80 min: Edwards scurries down the middle of the park and slips a pass wide right for Porro, who only just gets a cross away before the ball rolls out for a goal kick. Pedro Porro nearly scored in the last minute with a sensational curler.

Sporting CP vs Tottenham LIVE updates, confirmed team news and ... (Football.London)

LIVE: Follow all the action right here as Tottenham travel to Sporting CP in their second Group D game in the Champions League.

Up front Richarlison is in fine form and Son and Kane will be looking to spark their relationship back to life alongside and with him. The centre-back talked up former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards in his press conference ahead of the game and the attacker will be desperate to show Tottenham what they missed. That's for another day though and Tottenham must focus on tonight. For Spurs, Kane and Son are struggling with their final touch, the former particularly. Spurs have Lloris to thank after stopping Edwards from netting against his former club. Sporting have looked dangerous going forward and ex-Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards has impressed. That half didn't start the way Sporting were expecting. Sporting have plenty of quality and Conte will need to ensure his side are switched on from start to finish if they are to make it back-to-back wins to start the group stages. Tottenham are not going to have as much of the ball, particularly in the first half, and how much quality those three can show as they break up the pitch, along with the wing-backs and one of the midfielders is going to be key to the direction this match takes. Harry Kane chance as Richarlison plays him down the left and he fires an effort across that the keeper parries. (18+, new customers only, T&C’s) Richarlison rounds the keeper and puts the ball in the net but he's a long way offside.

Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham: Spurs shocked x2 in stoppage time (NBC Sports)

Paulinho and Arthur Gomes scored in stoppage time to give Sporting Lisbon a perfect 2-0 start to UEFA Champions League Group D play.

Tottenham were more free-flowing and expansive at times last season (particularly down the stretch), but that was out of necessity as they came from behind to finish 4th. Aside from their opening-day thrashing of Southampton, it’s been a similar story: slow out of the gates (also happened against Saints), better but not great after the half and then, eventually, the goal they needed. Spurs were due to play defending Premier League champions Manchester City over the weekend, prior to [the passing of Queen Elizabeth II](https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2022/09/11/premier-league-games-postponed-following-death-of-queen-elizabeth-ii/). The flip side, of course, is that Spurs have given up just five goals in six games (2nd-fewest in the PL) and have been the better side in all but one game (the draw away to Chelsea). The nutmeg. The run.

Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham: Player ratings and analysis as 'mini ... (iNews)

Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the season and a former academy graduate played a key role in their Champions League downfall.

“When you arrive you have to try to fill the box and to be accurate and strong to attack the goal. I think we could score and we tried to win the game. Popped up in a couple of dangerous positions to score but lacks the killer instinct in those areas that Conte craves in his wing-backs. Emerson Royal – Flashed a dangerous ball across the six-yard-box but none of Tottenham’s trio of attackers were ready to attack it. Hugo Lloris – Made an excellent early save on the stretch to prevent a Pedro Goncalves shot from sneaking into the bottom corner and his handling was solid. As for Spurs, it was a night to forget and one that could not be put down to weariness after Saturday’s match with Manchester City was called off.
