The New Zealand performer's debut song, from her forthcoming EP, is a tonic for coming-of-age woes that feels pertinent in 2022.

“The themes for me are love and loss, moving from suburbia to a big city… “I really wanted to try different styles just because of the wide range of music that I like. “I grew up listening to Melodrama and going to all of her concerts. I feel more excited to be living in the world, the body of work I’ve created. I feel like if I was 19, I probably wouldn’t have had as clear a vision of who I am”. “The only way that I can come up with answers and big grand statements in my life is through songwriting,” she shares. I feel like at this age of 23, now is the right time [to release] … “I’ve written two poetry books before, and poetry is songwriting,” she says. So honestly, it’s pretty similar, I feel that there is a natural progression from poetry to songwriting.” Indy moved to the US to study and during her time in New York, she wrote two poetry books and a full EP. And as with many talented musicians, it’s a skill that follows her, even when she isn’t intending to be creative. What follows is a tug-of-war of emotions between contentment and longing, embodying the feeling of knowing you shouldn’t be with someone, but still wanting it more than ever.

Indy Yelich Wants Her Music To Hit You In The Feelings (NYLON)

The 23-year-old poet — and Lorde's younger sister — is ready to be seen.

I feel really happy that I tried a lot of stuff. But the main thing is to just be true to yourself, and I really wanted to forge my own path because I feel like I'm so young and hungry with what I want to say. I can say a few things, and I don't know if I'm allowed to, but I'm going to say it anyway. I wanted to try a ‘70s banger because, whilst pop influence is such a main thing in my life, my music taste is scattered. If anything, it's really helpful to have someone who is in the music industry who can help you and support you with advice. I think that poetry and free writing really, really helped me with how to eventually form a cohesive song. I just fell in love with the history of New York in the '80s. And then I guess I just progressed because songwriting is a form of storytelling. You've got the feeling, and I can write a banging chorus, but it took me ages to figure out just the actual indie pop sound. I had to learn, honestly, how to write a pop song. “I just want people to listen to it in their cars,” she says. A self-proclaimed “writer, first and foremost,” she published her first book of poetry, Sticky Notes, in 2018, and followed that up with her second, Dudette, in March 2022.
