But the co-main should also be fascinating. Despite outlanding his opponent in eight of the 12 rounds, Golovkin fell on the scorecards in a close majority decision. The fight would live up to the hype as both went toe-to-toe in a slugfest for all 12 rounds. Both have a long history dating back to September 2017 for one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the last decade. He's looked great through seven fights to start his career and I expect to see more of that this weekend. Both fighters looked great as they hit the scales on Friday afternoon outside T-Mobile Arena. Canelo vs. GGG Fight: Live Updates (The New York Times)

Saúl Álvarez, who goes by Canelo, and Gennadiy Golovkin, nicknamed GGG, box for the third time on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Their main event is scheduled ...

After beginning his career in the boxing hinterlands of Germany, Golovkin rocketed to stardom in the 2010s with a series of knockouts and title wins, leading up to his first two fights against Álvarez. That opens up several questions for this fight: Golovkin is one of the greatest knockout artists in boxing history, but how will his power translate going up in weight and against a beefier Álvarez? The recent loss could just be written off as the price Álvarez paid for fighting in a division he is unsuited for. To some, Golovkin won both fights, especially the first one, where one judge, Adalaide Byrd, turned in a scorecard that read 118-110 in favor of Álvarez, and was He has had a handful of different promoters in his career, but they all settled on the same formula: Have Álvarez fight as often as possible in early May, for Cinco de Mayo, and mid-September, in line with the formal day of independence, Sept. It is hard to remember now, but Álvarez fought most of his early career at super welterweight (154 pounds), only finally moving up to middleweight for the first two fights against Golovkin. Álvarez has since broken up with Golden Boy and as a promotional free-agent is able to charge a premium for his bouts. The broadcast’s cameras showed the star of the “Creed” film franchise in Alvarez’s locker room, exchanging hugs and greetings with the super middleweight champ. But Ali and Rosado fought in real life, where the 27-year-old Akhmedov’s speed and footwork and combination punching propelled him to a lopsided victory. Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico holds two major title belts, and the 35-year-old Nicaraguan legend Roman Gonzalez remains a major player in the division. Saúl Álvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin have the main event on a card of eight fights. Here’s a peek at the card and how the fights have played out so far:

Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin: Álvarez is the early aggressor (Los Angeles Times)

Live updates and results from Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin as the two boxers meet in the ring for the third time Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in ...

The strategy was in stark contrast to his more passive approach a year earlier in the first meeting, which ended in a controversial draw. A motto was stitched in red on the other: “Legacy is Earned.” Collazo shook off the cobwebs and got back up, but Pacheco unleashed a combination of punches until referee Celestino Ruiz stepped in at the 2:29 mark to end the fight. Canelo is just too big of a favorite to lay that kind of money on, but he’s younger, still in his prime and I believe he’s better than he was in 2018 when he won their second fight. Rodriguez used a deft jab for most of the fight to keep Gonzalez at bay. A clash of heads occurs in the final seconds of the round. The fight is one-third complete and the drama is lacking so far. Canelo is the aggressor who is marching forward picking and choosing one punch at a time. Golovkin starts to muster offense with an uppercut in the final minute of the round. Canelo Álvarez is increasingly distancing himself from all of the doubts from the first two fights — but it’s coming four years too late. [Joe Hand Promotions](https://www.joehandpromotions.com/venue-search/) has a complete list of bars and restaurants that will be carrying the fight across the country. Round 10: The tit-for-tat battle picks up a bit more, as Golovkin is still able to fire off his pistol-like jab.

Oddsmakers have Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 knockouts) as the overwhelming favorite.

Yet it should not be forgotten that, for most of his career, he was an implacable and ferocious world champion. He tried to build on that momentum but, in the last stretch of the fight, Álvarez cruised comfortably home. It was here, in May, that he lost for only the second time in 17 years, when he was outboxed by Dmitry Bivol. He was unable to impose himself and, especially in the first seven rounds, he looked a disconsolate version of the previously formidable middleweight champion who dominated his division for so many years. It was plain that, then, he and Golovkin were two champions of almost equal merit. Álvarez, the undisputed world super-middleweight champion, was a comprehensive winner and the only surprise was that, for once, the judges were sympathetic to Golovkin.

"I'm just glad to share the ring with him," Alvarez said. By the end of Round 3, Golovkin's face was already swollen, and a large welt emerged on his forehead. Round 10 was more of the same, with a bundle of sharp right uppercuts on the inside set up by Golovkin's excellent jab. I'm glad to be involved in that kind of fights." Golovkin is near the end but insists he'll press on with his career. Golovkin, 40, a native of Kazakhstan who fights out of Los Angeles, was down wide on all three cards entering the stretch and picked up the pace. Golovkin pumped his jab but never followed up with a right hand. The September 2018 rematch, which Alvarez won via majority decision, was far from convincing, a battle that begged for an encore. Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) started strong while Golovkin worked his jab and barely threw his powerful right hand, the punch that launched him to stardom and a legendary middleweight championship run. Alvarez said he will wait to see if he needs surgery, which according to the physician would require six to 12 weeks of rehab afterward. "I've gone through difficult times with my defeats, and I've shown that defeats are great. He even called Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) a phony who pretends to be a nice person.

Canelo Álvarez beats Gennady Golovkin by unanimous decision to ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Mexican superstar scores unanimous-decision victory and bragging rights over Kazakhstani rival.

Golovkin had fought only four times in the four years since that bout, and this third bout likely was delayed by his vocal criticism of Álvarez for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance before the second fight. In the show's penultimate bout, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez remained unbeaten and retained his WBC super flyweight title with a difficult unanimous-decision victory over Israel Gonzalez. Álvarez and Golovkin first fought in 2017 and again in 2018, but those 24 rounds did nothing to determine superiority among two evenly matched fighters with nearly unmatched combinations of skill and punching power. The 32-year-old Álvarez was a 5-to-1 favorite shortly before the opening bell, and he fought like it. Golovkin again said he won't retire after this bout, but the longtime middleweight champion took only his second loss – and the first that was decisive. “I have a great plan,” Golovkin said of his future. Álvarez wasn't much more accurate, landing only 26% of his shots, but the Mexican star landed 85 power punches to Golovkin's 46 and controlled the ring for long stretches. “I have a lot of appointments. Golovkin started far too slowly with no clear strategy to take the initiative away from Álvarez. I’ve gone through difficult times with my defeat, but defeats can show how you can be great, how you can come back and show humility.” “For me, I’m just glad to share the ring with him. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fight.”

Canelo and GGG End One of Boxing's Fun Rivalries (The New York Times)

For all his successes and talent, Gennadiy Golovkin is destined to be remembered as Saúl Álvarez's foil.

After the fight was delayed while Álvarez served a suspension for testing positive for clenbuterol (he blamed tainted meat he ate in Mexico and said he stopped eating beef), Golovkin called his onetime sparring partner a drug cheat. “He pretends to be a good person and be different, but he’s not.” Whether he fights Bivol next, or somebody else, it seems Álvarez’s future resides in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, one more reason his struggle with Golovkin is finally over. Golovkin won most of the later rounds on the judges’ scorecards, and he has to wonder what would have happened had he begun the fight aggressively. The king of his rivalry with Golovkin certainly, finally. It was perhaps an incongruous statement coming from Álvarez, ever the showman, considering he was wearing a crown as he said it. Fight weekends are always big in Las Vegas, and this time tens of thousands of Mexicans and Mexican Americans descended on The Strip to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which was on Friday, in proximity to its favorite fighter. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 in favor of Álvarez, scoring that did not do Álvarez’s dominant win justice. Golovkin spent the first two-thirds of the fight weakly probing with his left jab and tagged Álvarez with damaging punches only when he abandoned caution late. Golovkin, 40, is such a fearsome puncher — he has won all of his professional fights against boxers not named Saúl Álvarez, and almost all of them by knockout — that he is regularly avoided. To be remembered as the fighter whose greatest value lay in providing a canvas for Álvarez, known as Canelo, to paint on. Golovkin, then, over the course of 24 rounds, stuck as closely to Álvarez as anybody has.
