(WITF) – Pennsylvania drivers could have their pick of new license plate designs under a bill the state House is moving forward.

That’s down from more than [$279 million](https://www.revenue.pa.gov/News%20and%20Statistics/ReportsStats/RevenueReceipts/Documents/2019-20/2019_08_bfmmonthlyreport.pdf) in August of 2019, before the pandemic. The agency also [allows non-profit groups](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Pages/Special-Organizations.aspx) to submit [their own designs](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Pages/Approved-Organizations.aspx). Mike Carroll (D-Luzerne) pointed out as he opposed the bill Wednesday. “PennDOT has scores of license plates right now,” Carroll said. Right now, drivers can pick them up only at [a DMV location.](https://www.dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Pages/Open-Locations.aspx) [PennDOT](https://www.witf.org/tag/penndot/) currently designs and produces the standard blue-and-yellow plate and some specialty plates. PennDOT uses that fund to help pay for road and bridge construction projects. Delozier claimed her bill would raise $10 million for that cash pool per year. [$272 million](https://www.revenue.pa.gov/News%20and%20Statistics/ReportsStats/RevenueReceipts/Documents/2022-23/2022_08_bfmmonthlyreport.pdf) in gas taxes – which the Department of Revenue calls the oil company franchise tax. The Pennsylvania State Police also uses it to pay for some of its enforcement efforts.
