Silver Ferns thrash understrength Jamaica after frustrating week (1 News)

The Silver Ferns put on a relentless display across the entire court to win the first Taini Jamison Trophy Test comfortably in Auckland.

Jamaica finished with some fight in them but again the Silver Ferns outscored the Commonwealth Games silver medallists 15-12 and with it, in almost scripted fashion, Nweke sealed a convincing win with a well-earned final shot of the night. "We've got two matches. That saw Jamaica go on two three-goal runs of their own but with Nweke and Ekenasio flawless from 18 attempts in the third quarter, again the score widened with the Silver Ferns up 54-33 going into the final quarter. The scoring blitz proved to be the difference of the second quarter as the Silver Ferns went to halftime up 36-20 to the delight of the Auckland crowd. Jamaica started the second quarter in more promising fashion, trading goals 7-7 with the Silver Ferns after some firm words from Francis and a positional change getting Linton out of her match-up with Nweke. The teamwide dominance against a Jamaican side missing players, experience and time to adjust to New Zealand time [they got off a 16-hour flight from the US just yesterday] saw the Silver Ferns head into the first break up 21-10.

Silver Ferns' win over Jamaica was forgettable, but one of them will ... (Stuff.co.nz)

The on-court action against a depleted Jamaican team won't last long in the memory. Elle Temu's reaction to the national anthem on debut was another story.

If quality local sport journalism is important to you, become a Stuff supporter today. A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. These two teams will go again on Thursday night at Pulman Arena, which is a 41.7km drive away from Eventfinda Stadium, for those not familiar with Auckland. Temu’s reaction to hearing the national anthem for the first time as a Silver Fern was heartwarming, while it was nice to see Jamaica take an early lead and not wilt completely. Nweke also did the business at goal shoot, finishing with 59 goals from 63 shots. If you must know what happened in the one-sided match: Jamaica took a 2-0 lead early, but that was as good as it got. *

New Zealand took out the first test of the series with a dominant performance at Auckland.

New Zealand added a further 16 goals in the fourth quarter, with Jamaica scoring a respectable 12, but it was Grace who would have the final say with a goal right on full-time. The Silver Ferns scored 18 goals in the third quarter to Jamaica's 13, for the 54-33 lead going into the final 15 minutes. New Zealand's attack hit their straps in the third quarter on attack, but Jamaica carried on their brave play from the first half.

"We know that they needed to have 10, and she's a proud Jamaican and sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do. "I think player welfare is really important, not only for the seven out there. Captain Shimona Nelson led from the front, screaming words of encouragement to her team from Jamaica's goal third. Ring in substitutes Carla Borrego and coach Francis didn't warm up and remained in their trackies, while Romelda Aiken-George, who gave birth to her first child six weeks ago, arrived at Eventfinda Stadium at the same time as the fans. Warming up, Jamaica resembled a club team heading down to the local courts on a frosty Saturday morning. The result of the match seemed rather clear before play had even started.

Tears to triumph: Elle Temu shines in Silver Ferns debut (1 News)

After getting caught up in the moment during her first national anthem as a Silver Fern, the defender came out and had a blinder for her family and country.

"And for it to be 60 minutes and just thrown in to see what it's like, it was awesome." Temu's tears were a reminder that despite all the chaos in the build up to the first Test, it was still just that - a Test - and for the Stars defender in particular, a "debut to remember". "It was a big step up and I'm just grateful to be here," Temu said.

Silver Ferns coach 'disappointed' at Jamaica series shambles (1 News)

Jamaica's coach Connie Francis - who may have to play tonight - vowed the situation "will never happen again".

"It has been a very challenging month, replacing players to ensure that we have the players to come. That is our first priority," a spokesperson said. I really appreciate Netball New Zealand for the hard work that they have put in and also Netball Jamaica to ensure that we can have a series." "I think there's standards that we try to uphold but also the work that's really important in regards to netball generally in the world and highlighting netball as a professional sport. "I suppose there are areas that are disappointing not only for us as the Silver Ferns but also our fans and also our ability to present something as world class not only professionally on court but also off court," Dame Noeline said. Dame Noeline said it was a "celebration" to get the series over the line but there was still plenty to question.

Lights out: Silver Ferns shooters serve Jamaica second big loss (1 News)

A superb all-round shooting performance for New Zealand and the tough task of playing back-to-back 60-minute games for Jamaica has seen the Silver Ferns ...

The changes did little to slow the scoring blitz from the Silver Ferns though as they opened with another five-goal run and in the end, another dominant quarter of scoring from the Kiwis - 19 goals to 7. Taurua made another adjustment to start the second half with the introduction of Maia Wilson for Nweke and the new goal shooter immediately got into her work with Ekenasio, racking up 15 goals from 16 attempts in the third quarter. The switch appeared to work with the Silver Ferns going on a five-goal run late in the second quarter off two Jamaican errors to head to halftime up 36-22. Jamaica coughed up five turnovers in the first quarter alone as a result although New Zealand were letting some of their superb work go to waste with a high penalty count. Ekenasio contributed a flawless five goals to that tally in the opening quarter as she sought more opportunities to shoot in comparison to her efforts last night where she only shot - and made - seven shots in the entire match. Reuelu-Buchanan made the most of her opportunity, notching up eight assists in the first quarter alone as the Kiwi combo of Nweke and Ekenasio opened the night 20 from 21.
